They were looking for developers working in his area.
He had been somewhat aware of ZCoin before that, although he hasn't done any sort of intense study into how the protocol worked but was still interested as a result of what I had worked on with my thesis.
From then, as a result of being interested in it, he contacted Reuben.
After that, he got involved into ZCoin in that way.
