聽起来有点难以置信，可是种种迹象都表明汉藏-马来同源。目前专家学者的共识是远古马来人与原始汉藏语族在公元前8000年左右开始分化，華北地区演化出汉藏语族，而華南地区则演化出远古马来人。

马来人与汉藏语族产生巨大分化的两个主因:
1。地理气候（环境）的长期遗传学影响
2。与矮黑人（negrito）杂交
