Rainy Day Camera Practice

in Silver Bloggers11 months ago

It has been raining a great deal lately around our parts. We kind of needed it as the grass was getting a little brown. The wife wanted a break from watering flowers as well.

Even though the rain had kept me inside, I figured might as well use the time to play around and learn the camera some more. So below are a few pictures from inside the house.

We bought the above "ornamental thingy" hanging on the wall in Japan. Not sure what you call these sort of things, so I just call them "ornamental thingy". If you know what they are called, let me know. It matches some of our living room furniture that we purchased there as well.

There was no light except for the TV, so I thought it turned out good for a doofus behind the camera.

Above we have another "ornamental thingy". Again, there was no light but the TV, so again, thought I did pretty good in capturing this one. I really like how the metal look sparkles in the flash of the camera.

For me this "thingy" seems to tell as little story sometimes about the tree and what you see above the ground is only part of the story. The roots below the ground, that dig in, do a lot of the dirty work, that nobody sees, is a big part of the story too. You can compare that to a person I guess.

In the image above we have my military challenge coin collection. This one just didn't turn out so good at all. I could not get the camera to focus on it for the life of me. Not sure why it would not focus correctly, but I will eventually figure out how to focus right one day.

Here we have one of our two Shisa in front of the entertainment center. We have two stone Shisa on each side of our front door for decoration.

Shisa are:

a traditional Ryukyuan cultural artifact and decoration derived from Chinese guardian lions, often seen in similar pairs, resembling a cross between a lion and a dog, from Okinawan mythology. Shisa are wards, believed to protect from some evils. People place pairs of shisa on their rooftops or flanking the gates to their houses, with the left shisa traditionally having a closed mouth, the right one an open mouth. The open mouth shisa traditionally wards off evil spirits, and the closed mouth shisa keeps good spirits in. source

Now this one was kind of a last minute snap shot. It is the little plant with a small gnome setup inside my wife put together. It is kind of neat looking from the side. I should have gotten a side shot of it actually. Not sure why I didn't.

Well that is it for the rainy days practice photo shoots. Believe me when i say I took a lot more, but these are about the only ones worthy of making the cut.

Thanks for reading and checking them out.

It's blisteringly cold here today as well, rain coming too. Luckily I cut the grass yesterday and so glad I didn't put it off because it would be very unpleasant to do today. I like your wife's terrarium with the plants, that's beautiful. I think I might take a page out of your book and take photos inside today too.

Sounds like a good plan if it is going to be cold and rainy. It is supposed to be just the opposite here. Hotter than Hades and possible rain. I had planned to get outside and take some shots, but if not I have a backup plan for inside.

She likes to do those little terrarium like things. She has a little village outside as well. At least I think it is still out there. I can't keep up with all her little projects.😀

Having these kinds of hobbies is great. I would loved to have done something like that, I want to do one big one with my carnivorous plants one day, but at the moment don't really have the space.

You should check if the one outside is still there, could be worthy of a few pics too.

She loves doing it and it makes the place look nice. I will definitely check and take shot if still there.

You got some nice challenge coins there! Looks like you're getting the hang of it.

Thanks. The challenge coins are another collection in progress. As far as the camera, it is definitely not something I am good at for sure. Going to look to get outside tomorrow and take some pics of a few things if the rain holds up.

Sorry haven't been around much lately. Just been off my game some. How you been doing?

Surviving but getting tired of working so much. I may take some time off when I finish up my current contract. I've been trying to post more but some days I just don't feel like it, so I don't! Are you feeling ok? It's normal to be off every now and again.

I do hope you get some time off soon. I understand about posting. You got to do what feels right for you. Yeah, I am doing alright, just real tired lately. But aren't we all?

So what's this new CCC thing about?

Its a curated collection of posts. You can do one through PeakD. It allows you to organize the curation of the posts in a nice looking display. Want to help the community by putting together a good curated list of posts for coin collecting tips (just completed) and one for stacking (which will be next). The plan is to try and keep them fresh with any new posts that might be relevant the community thinks should be added and remove any that might no longer be.

Very cool, didn't know about that feature! Thanks!

Hell yeah... I wish I weren't tired all the damn time. Getting old sucks...

Shisas are popular on the mainland too. People like to buy them to show off that they've been to Okinawa before. You have a nice collection of stuff.

Thanks. The wife went on a little buying spree when we lived there. Half our living room furniture and and spattering throughout the house is from Okinawa. We loved it there.

If it doesn't rain tomorrow, I may get some shots of the outdoor Shisas guarding our front door. Maybe some other stuff too.

It is nice playing around the house with one's camera, actually makes you really look at stuff you just take for granted. That first ornamental thingy you bought in Japan, may be Vintage Chinese Wall decor, according to Google Lens.
I like your wife's succulent terrarium, very pretty indeed!
Thank you for sharing your rainy day photo session with us @coinjoe.

Yes it does. It is raining on and off again this weekend, so I may do something similar. That being Chinese wall decor would make sense, as the Okinawa people have just as much culture from China as they do from Japan. As far as the succulent, we have placed a UV lamp over it since the photo wsa taken as it was not getting enough lighting. Thank you for stopping by and reading. I hope to have more rainy day photos soon, but wish the rain would just go away and I could just share photos :-)

Sorry I have no idea what the ornamental thingy is called other than that

Are your founds behind glass that may confuse the camera focusing

They are not behind glass. The only thing I can think of is there is an aquarium with a light just below them. Maybe the light from it was impacting the focus? Not sure, but going to try again another time and experiment to see if I can figure it out when I feel like I have more patience.

good luck I am sure you will work it out

People say they don't like rainy days, but I think they are perfect for doing things like this. I'm happy to stay inside and spend time doing things that I might not normally get to. It's good to see you exploring the camera a little...it reminds me I should steal (borrow) my guy's camera and do the same.

I don't mind them lately because we needed the rain. But now it is getting to be a bit much. I could have gone out today and snapped a few shots since it was clear today, but I just didn't feel like it. Maybe tomorrow if the rain stays away.

I hope you do borrow your guy's camera and snap some shots. Can't wait to see them posted when you do.

There's a point when enough is enough, I know. I hope it stops so you can get out and about.
