Hello everyone! On my way back to my city (Zaragoza) from Amposta (Tarragona), we stopped to see another of what are considered the most beautiful villages in Spain, which is Calaceite, located in Teruel, in the area of the river matarraña.
It was very hot, but we wanted to take advantage of the journey and stretch our legs. We thought it was a good idea to visit it as it seemed quite small.
¡Hola a todos! En mi regreso a mi ciudad (Zaragoza) desde Amposta (Tarragona), paramos a ver otro de los que son considerados como los pueblos más bonitos de España, que es Calaceite, situado en Teruel, en la zona del río matarraña.
Hacía mucho calor, pero queríamos aprovechar el trayecto y estirar las piernas. Nos pareció buena idea visitarlo ya que parecía bastante pequeño.
We left the car near a fountain called "la bassa" which was formerly a pond where rainwater was collected and stored, serving to supply the population with it. It is currently connected to the public network of the village.
Dejamos el coche cerca de una fuente llamada "la bassa" que antiguamente era una balsa donde se recogía el agua de lluvia y se almacenaba, sirviendo para que la población tuviera abastecimiento de ella. Actualmente está conectada a la red pública del pueblo.
The streets were steep uphill or downhill because the town is on a hill, so with the heat at that time and how much the sun was burning, it was an arduous task to walk through them without sweating.
Las calles eran empinadas cuesta arriba o cuesta abajo porque el pueblo está encima de una loma, así que con el calor que hacía a esas horas y lo mucho que ardía el sol, se hacía una ardua tarea caminar por ellas sin sudar.
The parish church of the Assumption was closed, but we could see a beautiful architecture in its facade full of details that included the coat of arms of Calaceite and two Solomonic columns.
La iglesia parroquial de la Asunción estaba cerrada, pero podíamos ver una bonita arquitectura en su fachada llena de detalles que incluían el escudo de Calaceite y dos columnas salomónicas.
Before entering the old part of the town, we looked out to see the surrounding landscape and nature.
Antes de adentrarnos en la parte del casco antiguo del pueblo, nos asomamos a ver el paisaje y la naturaleza que lo rodeaba.
Grapes, lavender, some flowers and rosemary. A very aromatic garden.
Destacaban las uvas, la lavanda, algunas flores y romero. Un jardín bastante aromático.
We begin to enter the old town, along the main street, and what they say is the most beautiful street in town: Maella street. It is reminiscent of a medieval style.
Comenzamos a adentrarnos en el casco histórico, por la calle mayor, y la que dicen que es la calle más bonita del pueblo: la calle Maella. Recuerda a un estilo medieval.
In this next photo is the Portalet de Maella, inside these wooden doors is the chapel of the Virgen del Pilar, which only open for October 12 is when it is the day of this virgin. We went there in summer and found it closed. It is a baroque chapel from the 18th century.
En esta siguiente foto está el Portalet de Maella, en el interior de esas puertas de madera se encuentra la capilla de la Virgen del Pilar, la cual sólo abren para el 12 de octubre que es cuando es el día de esta virgen. Nosotros al ir en verano nos la encontramos cerrada. Es una capilla barroca del siglo XVIII.
Calaceite is often referred to as the "Florence" of Spain, because it was a haven for great artists, in fact it has a square dedicated to them that we will see later. Some of them are commemorated with signs that we find on our way. All the informative signs are written in Spanish and Catalan, the dialect spoken in Catalonia, due to the proximity of this town to both regions (Aragon and Catalonia).
Calaceite es a menudo nombrada como la "Florencia" de España, porque fue un refugio de grandes artistas, de hecho tiene una plaza dedicada a ellos que veremos más adelante. Rememoran a algunos con carteles que encontramos a nuestro camino. Todos los carteles informativos se encuentran escritos en castellano y en catalán, el dialecto que se habla en Cataluña, por la cercanía que tiene este pueblo con ambas regiones (Aragón y Cataluña)
The text of the photo refers to Ángel Crespo, who lived in Calaceite from 1991 until his death, and was a poet, essayist, translator, teacher and art critic; and his wife Pilar Gómez Beda who was also a writer, editor, teacher, translator and literary critic. The text also indicates that both were buried in this town.
El texto de la foto hace alusión a Ángel Crespo, que vivió en Calaceite desde el 1991 hasta que falleció, y fue un poeta, ensayista, traductor, profesor y crítico de arte; y a su esposa Pilar Gómez Beda que también fue escritora, editora, profesora, traductora y crítica literaria. El texto también indica que ambos fueron enterrados en este pueblo.
Going up this cobblestone street we will find the artists' square that I mentioned before, which for me, was the most interesting of the visit.
Subiendo por esta empedrada calle encontraremos la plaza de los artistas que os he comentado antes, que para mí, fue las más interesantes de la visita.
The text inside the stone book is a poem written by Ángel Crespo, and reads:
*"I caressed the stones so much
That they became a grove.
Where there was dureca there were birds and green grass.
Where once the olive tree, water;
Where the silences, trills.
Where I stumbled on the stones
my voice found its way. "* --> Ángel Crespo.
El texto dentro del libro de piedra es una poesía autoría de Ángel Crespo, y dice:
*"Tanto acaricié las piedras
Que se hicieron arboleda.
Donde hubo dureca había pájaros y verde hierba.
Donde antes el olivo, agua;
Donde los silencios, trinos.
Donde tropecé en las piedras,
halló mi voz su camino."* --> Ángel Crespo.
This square also remembered other artists who had been in Calaceite, such as Teresa Jassá Casé, a ceramist. The square had several open-air works.
En esta plaza también se recordaban a otros artistas que habían estado en Calaceite, como Teresa Jassá Casé, una ceramista. La plaza tenía varias obras al aire libre.
We left to continue exploring the town.
Nos marchamos para seguir explorando el pueblo.
The truth is that where it was cooler was under these arches. We had arrived at Plaza España, which was the main square.
La verdad es que donde más fresco se estaba era bajo estos arcos. Habíamos llegado a la plaza España que era la plaza principal.
Near the town hall there is another very nice little square.
Cerca del ayuntamiento hay otra pequeña plaza muy bonita.
We said goodbye to the town of Calaceite because we had to continue our trip. We decided to stop for lunch later, in another town called Alcañiz, which I will tell you more about later. I will just mention the place where we stopped to eat and what we ate.
To leave Calaceite back to the car, we went through the gateway chapel of San Antonio, which formerly was part of the wall that surrounded the village, but now is another religious chapel.
Nos despedimos del pueblo de Calaceite porque teníamos que continuar nuestro viaje. Decidimos parar a comer más adelante, en otro pueblo que se llama Alcañiz, del que ya os hablaré más adelante. Solo mencionaré el lugar donde paramos a comer y qué comimos.
Para salir de Calaceite de vuelta al coche, pasamos por el portal capilla de San Antonio, que antiguamente formaba parte de la muralla que rodeaba al pueblo, pero ahora es otra capilla religiosa.
We got back in the car towards Alcañiz (Teruel), and stopped for lunch at "Rokelin puro cerdo" which, as its name suggests, its star ingredient was pork.
Volvimos a subir al coche rumbo a Alcañiz (Teruel), y paramos a comer en "Rokelin puro cerdo" que, como su propio nombre indica, su ingrediente estrella era la carne del cerdo.
The restaurant was set in strong stone walls that insulated well from the heat outside. Decorated with pigs, ham and decor that reminded me a bit of steampunk style.
As a starter we ordered pork with Asian style teriyaki sauce.
El restaurante se encontraba en paredes de fuerte piedra que aisla bien del calor de fuera. Decorado con cerdos, jamón y decoración que me recordaba un poco al estilo steampunk.
Como entrante pedimos carne de cerdo con salsa teriyaki al estilo asiático.
We ordered a couple of hamburgers, both pork burgers.
Pedimos un par de hamburguesas, ambas de carne de cerdo.

Picturesque little town. I love the atmosphere of these medieval Southern European streets with stone walls, colorful windows and flowers hanging everywhere. To me, it doesn´t matter if it´s in Spain, Italy, Greece or Croatia, I just love this kind of places :) Thanks for showing us around, great post!

Yes, the truth is that in my country people do not usually give much value to these things because they see them every day but as a lover of history and the past, I love to walk the streets of these villages because they transport you to other times and are full of history and cultural heritage, which should be preserved for future generations. Thank you very much for commenting!
Yeah, that´s right :) I´m from the Czech Republic, we have a lot of historical stuff here too and just like you say, people don´t even pay attention to it because they see it every day. But I love to watch American tourists who cannot believe we have buildings here that were built a thousand of years ago :D
