RE: The Contenders In Hive's Everything App Race

in LeoFinance2 years ago

I'm not sure any single dapp needs to everything. If anything I think Hive Keychain is the key tool (no pun intended) as it unlocks access to all the dapps you need. This can be like the Unix principle of having many simple tools to do all you need. It's a different concept for people to understand, but then they can pick and choose which dapps do what they need. I don't expect Actifit to do general blogging or for Ecency to track my steps.

We just need to emphasis this freedom. Dapps should make it obvious that the user can do more with their account. Currently some hide the fact that they run on Hive.

The Unix principle is something, which I very rarely hear/read on the internet in general, and I use Linux distributions (Unix-like systems) since 2007 or 2008. Very interesting to see a comparison like this.

If you had one tool to drill holes, bang in nails and solder wires it would be a pain to use. Individual tools can each be better at their jobs.

I think it depends on what is meant by 'everything'. Some functionality goes together very well. Some might not. Certainly from a social media point of view, the ability to do a twitter-like post, a full post, a photo post, a video post, a fitness post, etc. from one app seems reasonable. I don't need or really want 12 apps to post to hive. That's like carrying around 12 slightly different hammers. On the other hand, I don't think it necessarily makes sense to integrate various block chain games into one app.

As far as the financial aspect, the web based interfaces have always had that integrated (at least from a user perspective). It's just a matter of how well.

Mobile apps are horrible for how stupidly they are focused. Every restaurant and retailer has their own app and for the most part it's the same as a web interface anyway.

I guess what I'm saying is that there is a balance. Integration is good where it makes sense. That doesn't mean it is good for everything.

Yes. And keeping the example on the software field, it is very convenient to be able to easily install thousands of softwares from the software depositories on the various Linux distributions. And you can customize the entire Linux distribution to your liking. You can even build it (the entire Linux distribution) from scratch. Like filling a big drawer with your most used, favorite tools.

It is true that an app will not to everything. However, it goes back to the question of whether the future is us having a device full of applications, basically one per function, or one or two that handle most things.

The concept of the everything app is based upon the latter. We will see how it unfolds but I am willing to bet that is the path taken. We know Musk is focusing upon that. Will applications on Hive?

Some are already doing so.

Big apps tend to be unwieldy and have more security issues. They also need a lot of developers. I use multiple Hive dapps and am happy to do so.
