Maybe you've heard of the LMAC (Let's make a Collage) community?
If not, I first would like to tell you a little bit about it.
It was originally created for a weekly collage competition. While the contest is still the focus, our community is now also focused on digital collages in general. In other words, it is about works of art created with the help of image editing software, using photos, vector graphics, 3D renderings and/or your own brushstrokes.
Sounds complicated, but it's really not.

In this post, I would like to attract you to the world of collage making, give you an understanding of it and provide you with the tools to awaken the artist in yourself. 🙂
And it would be a great pleasure to welcome you to the LMAC community afterwards.

Vielleicht hast du schon einmal etwas von der LMAC (Let's make a Collage) community gehört?
Wenn nicht, würde ich dir zunächst gerne ein Wenig davon erzählen.
Einst für den Zweck eines wöchentlichen Collagen-Contests entstanden, bezieht sich unsere Community heute, mit dem Contest im Mittelpunkt, thematisch auch generell auf digitale Collagen. Also Kunstwerke, die mithilfe von Software zur Bildbearbeitung, unter Verwendung von Fotos, Vektor-Grafiken, 3D-Renderings und/oder eigenen Pinselstrichen erstellt wurden.
Klingt kompliziert, ist aber wirklich gar nicht so.

In diesem Beitrag, möchte dir den Einstieg in die Welt des Collagen-Kreirens schmackhaft machen, es dir näher bringen und das Rüstzeug geben, den Künstler in dir zu erwecken. 🙂
Ich würde mich jedenfalls sehr freuen, dich anschließend in der LMAC Community begrüssen zu dürfen.

What exactly is a collage?

In non-digital art, collages have been around for a very long time. Traditionally, the singular of this word refers to a work of art that consists of different materials that are actually alien to each other.
For example, you could create a traditional collage using natural materials, garbage and newspaper cuttings as materials. You could glue these materials onto a canvas and complete and refine them with your own brushstrokes, for example.
My little brother made a collage 30 years ago during a school project using various vacation postcards and cut-outs from travel catalogs.
The range of possibilities here is quite wide.

By contrast, digital collage creation involves virtually no external materials alien to each other in the physical sense. All material is sourced from digital images, such as photos, vector graphics and 3D renderings. Thematically and in style, however, the image parts can differ enormously. And it is sometimes astonishing what comes out of the combination of very different image parts.

Example:

I have to admit that it is not a masterpiece, but it is a work with a statement and it was not too complicated to create.
It is a collage I created in only 10 minutes and it consists of image parts taken from the images below.

Basically, almost all I did was cut out parts of the source images and placed them on another image. I used a free image editing program called GIMP to do this.

Was ist eigentlich eine Collage?

In der nicht-digitalen Kunst, kennt man Collagen schon sehr lange. Klassischerweise, bezeichnet das Singular dieses Wortes ein Kunstwerk, das aus unterschiedlichen, einander eigentlich fremden Materialien besteht.
Als Beispiel, könnte man eine klassische Collage erstellen, in dem man natürliche Materialien, Müll und Zeitungsausschnitte als Materialien verwendet. Man kann diese Materialien auf eine Leinwand kleben und z.B. mit eigenen Pinselstrichen ergänzen und verfeinern.
Mein kleiner Bruder machte vor 30 Jahren, während eines Schulprojektes, eine Collage aus unterschiedlichen Urlaubspostkarten und Ausschnitten aus Reisekatalogen.
Die Möglichkeiten sind hier recht vielfälltig.

In der digitallen Collagen-Erstellung wiederum, gibt es, im physischen Sinne, quasi keine einander fremden Materialien. Alles Material wird aus digitalen Bildern, wie z.B. Fotos, Vektor-Grafiken und 3D-Renderings bezogen. Thematisch und im Stil, können sich die Bildteile jedoch stark unterscheiden. Und es ist manchmal erstaunlich, was bei der Kombination unterschiedlichster Bildteile herauskommt.

Beispiel:

Zugegeben, es ist kein Meisterwerk, aber ein Werk mit einer Aussage und es war nicht kompliziert, sie zu erschaffen.
Diese, von mir in nur 10 Minuten erstellte Collage, besteht aus Bildteilen, die ich folgenden fremden Bildern entnommen habe.

Im Grunde habe ich fast nur Bildteile aus den Quellbildern ausgeschnitten und auf ein anderes Bild platziert. Dazu verwendete ich ein kostenloses Bildbearbeitungsprogramm namens GIMP.

Inspiration [EN]

In addition to materials, to create art we of course also need inspiration. It is the actual main component, the trigger for creative work and the seed of all creative development.

When listening to the boastful speeches of some artists about their inspirations in movies, one could get the impression that inspiration is some kind of etheric energy that only reveals itself to the most spiritually exalted. However, it is in fact a completely ordinary thing, as fascinating as this mental spark may be from a neurological point of view.
Not only experienced and highly gifted artists can experience it, inspiration can strike anyone, anywhere, on almost any occasion. It is an impulse that everyone knows, that leads to new thoughts and ideally also to creativity.

Imagine watching a monkey at the zoo carrying an empty turtle shell on its back through the animal enclosure, while the monkeys around it are going crazy because they also want to have such a beautiful shell. Threatening gestures are made, the screaming gets louder and louder and more and more hysterical...
You may think to yourself... "It's really going all Ninja Turtle on them, fists are about to fly soon", and you think it's funny. Which is why you can't get it out of your head and you start to form this thought into a vivid scene in your mind.
The Ninja Turtle Monkey will take them all on! ACTION!!! A comedy action movie starts to unfold before your mind's eye...
Do you know moments like this? If so, you're probably a creative mind. If not, then you are definitely a fascinatingly rational person.
In any case, this is pure inspiration.

The above is just one example among many of how inspiration can happen.
It happens to me, and many others, sometimes just by looking at the LMAC contest template photo. It's a different photo every week from @shaka's fascinating photo collection. And sometimes it's immediately obvious what's missing in it or what can be done with it.
These photos portray different things, such as natural surroundings, buildings, works of art, etc..
All of these are wonderful sources of inspiration. Nature in particular, with its diversity and unpredictability, reveals many inspiring details and events.

It's not that hard to get inspired. Sometimes you just have to look at things from a different perspective, to do things that you normally would never do and to allow thoughts that usually seem too crazy to be thought.
For example, read a book about a topic that you are not interested in. Or put yourself in the shoes of a bird when it flies. Try to find humor during sad occasions.
Write a letter to someone you've never written to before, and you don't know what to write.

Many people unfortunately lack the medium in which they could give expression to and live out their inspirations. Isn't that a loss?
In this regard, digital collages are a wonderful, easily accessible medium. Theoretically, anyone can use software to cut out parts of images and combine them into new images. After all, cut & paste tools are among the most basic functions of almost every image editing program.
From a practical point of view, to learn how to use a different image editing program, you can benefit from numerous videos, documentaries, tutorials and podcasts. The programs required for this are quite uncomplicated to use nowadays, which has a very positive effect on the learning curve. And with practice, your collages can become more and more sophisticated.

Inspiration [DE]

Neben Materialien, benötigt man zum Erschaffen von Kunst natürlich auch Inspiration. Sie ist die eigentliche Hauptzutat, der Auslöser kreativen Schaffens und die Keimzelle jeglicher kreativer Entwicklung.

Wenn man sich die hochtrabenden Reden einiger Künstler zu ihren Inspirationen in Kinofilmen anhört, könnte man den Eindruck bekommen, die Inspiration sei so eine Art Äther-Energie, die sich nur den spirituell Erlesensten offenbart. Dabei steckt dahinter ja eigentlich etwas völlig Alltägliches, so faszinierend dieser gedankliche Funkenflug aus neurologischer Sicht auch sein mag.
Nicht nur erfahrene und hochtalentierte Künstler erfahren sie, Inspiration kann jeden, überall, bei nahezu jeder Gelegenheit treffen. Es ist eine Eingebung, die jeder kennt, die zu neuen Gedanken führt und idealerweise auch zu Kreativität.

Stell dir vor, du beobachtest im Zoo einen Affen, der auf seinem Buckel einen leeren Schildkröten-Panzer durchs Gehege trägt, während die Affen um ihn herum am Durchdrehen sind, weil sie auch so einen schönen Panzer haben wollen. Bedrohliche Gesten werden ausgetauscht, das Gebrüll wird immer lauter und hysterischer...
Du denkst dir möglicherweise... "Der macht ja echt einen auf Ninja-Turtle, gleich fliegen hier die Fäuste.", und findest diesen Gedanken witzig. Weswegen er dir nicht aus dem Kopf geht und du beginnst, diesen Gedanken im Geiste zu einer lebendigen Scene zu formen.
Der Ninja-Turtle Affe, nimmts mit allen auf! ACTION!!! Ein Comedy-Actionfilm macht sich vor deinem geistigen Auge breit...
Kennst du solche Momente? Wenn ja, bist du wahrscheinlich ein kreativer Geist. Wenn nicht, dann bist du jedenfalls faszinierend rational.
Jedenfalls ist das astreine Inspiration.

Das obige ist nur ein Beispiel unter vielen möglichen, wie Inspiration geschehen könnte.
Mir selbst und vielen anderen, widerfährt es manchmal schon beim Anblick des Vorlagen-Fotos des LMAC-Contests. Es ist jede Woche ein anderes Foto aus @shaka's faszinierender Foto-Sammlung. Und manchmal ist sofort klar, was darin fehlt oder was man damit machen kann.
Diese Bilder zeigen unterschiedliche Dinge, wie natürliche Umgebungen, Gebäude, Kunstwerke, etc.
All das sind wunderbare Inspirationsquellen. Vor allem die Natur, mit ihrer Vielfältigkeit und Unberechenbarkeit, offenbart sie viele inspirierende Details und Ereignisse.

Es ist gar nicht schwer, sich inspirieren zu lassen. Manchmal muss man die Dinge nur aus einer anderen Perspektive betrachten, Dinge tun, die man sonst nie tut und Gedanken zulassen, die einem üblicherweise zu verrückt erscheinen, sie zu denken.
Lies zum Beispiel ein Buch über ein Thema, dass dich nicht interessiert. Oder versetze dich in einen Vogel, wenn er fliegt. Versuche während trauriger Anlässen Humor zu finden.
Schreib jemandem einen Brief, dem du nie zuvor geschrieben hast, du nicht weißt was du schreiben sollst.

Vielen Menschen fehlt unglücklicherweise das Medium, auf dem sie ihre Inspirationen ausleben und ausdrücken könnten. Ist das nicht ein Verlust?
Digitale Collagen, sind in dieser Hinsicht, ein wunderbares, allgemein zugängliches Medium. Denn theoretisch, kann jeder mithilfe einer Software Bildteile ausschneiden und zu neuen Bildern zusammenfügen. Ausschneide-&Einfüge-Werkzeuge, gehören immerhin zu den grundlegensten Funktionen, beinahe eines jeden Bildbearbeitungsprogrammes.
Praktisch gesehen, kommen einem heutzutage, zum Erlernen von unterschiedlichsten Bildbearbeitungsprogrammen, zahlreichste Videos, Dokumentationen, Tutoriale und Podcasts zu Gute. Da die dazu notwendigen Programme sind heute recht unkompliziert zu bedienen, was sich recht positiv auf die Lernkurve auswirkt. Und mit der Übung, können deine Collagen immer raffinierter werden.

There are numerous tools for creating collages. And not all of them have to cost money. I have compiled a small list of very good, free tools for you and included some introductory knowledge in the form of videos.

GIMP

GIMP is more of a general tool in the image editing genre. It can be used to professionally edit photos, create drawings, paintings, collages and much more. It is not too unlike the famous Photoshop software in terms of functionality and handling.

Canva

With Canva, you can work from anywhere you have access to the internet. It's a mobile app that runs in your web browser. The app doesn't care whether your web browser is installed on a personal computer, your smartphone, your car navigation device or your refrigerator. The functional focus of this service is on the design of print products and illustrations. However, many people also use it to create beautiful collages.

Krita

Krita is very similar to GIMP in many ways. The user interface feels like home for GIMP users.
Like GIMP, it is open source, but is developed by artists for artists, which means that the developers focus on the needs of artists.
Krita has handy painting and texturing functions. But Krita is also a very good choice for those who want to create animated works of art. A powerful animation system helps you to bring your art to life.

Für das Erstellen von Collagen, gibt es zahlreiche Werkzeuge. Diese müssen nicht immer etwas kosten. Ich habe hier eine kleine Liste sehr guter, freier Werkzeuge für dich erstellt und etwas Einstiegswissen in Form von Videos beigefügt.

GIMP

GIMP ist eher ein generelles Werkzeug im Bildbearbeitungs-Genre. Es lassen sich darin Fotos professionell bearbeiten, Zeichnungen erstellen, Gemälde erschaffen, Collagen kreieren und vieles mehr. Es ist von der Funktionsweise und Handhabung, der berühmten Photoshop-Software nicht unähnlich.

Canva

Mit Canva kannst du von all dort aus arbeiten, wo du Zugriff auf das Internet hast. Es ist eine mobile App, die im Webbrowser läuft. Der App ist es egal, ob dein Webbrowser auf einem Personal Computer, deinem Smartphone, auf deinem Auto-Navigationsgerät oder deinem Kühlschrank installiert ist. Die Stärken des Dienstes liegen eher im Design von Druckerzeugnissen und Illustrationen. Viele machen damit aber auch immer wieder sehr schöne Collagen.

Krita

Krita ist in vielen Dingen GIMP sehr ähnlich. Die Benutzeroberfläche fühlt sich für GIMP-Benutzer wie zuhause an.
Es ist wie GIMP Open Source, wird aber von Künstlern für Künstler entwickelt, wodurch das Augenmerk der Entwickler auf den Bedürfnissen von Künstlern liegt.
So verfügt Krita über praktische Mal- und Texturierungs-Funktionen. Aber auch wer Animierte Kunstwerke erstellen will, trifft mit Krita eine sehr gute Wahl. Ein machtvolles Animationssystem, hilft dir, deine Kunstwerke zum Leben zu erwecken.

The LMAC community

... is a Hive Community, since 2019. It all started with a collage design contest and that was LMAC's core motto for a long time. In the meantime, the community opened up to the topic of collages in general, also beyond the weekly contests.

From August 2020, we started the LMAC School blog series. It contains tips&tricks and information about image editing and making collages. The blog series currently consists of 16 pretty detailed posts and contains a lot of introductory knowledge.

In July 2021, we also founded the LMAC Image Library - a library of Public Domain photos, vector graphics, 3D renderings and much more - By Hivians, for Hivians.
Since a while the library is also searchable on our website.
The images indexed for it can be used by all Hivians for all sorts of things. For example, to create cover images for Hive posts or as a source of images to use for creating artworks from it.

We really welcome everyone who is interested, whether beginner, pro or master, to join us!

Die LMAC community

... ist eine Hive Community, seit 2019. Alles begann mit einem Collagen-Wettbewerb und das war auch lange Zeit das eiserne Motto LMACs. In der Zwischenzeit öffnete sich die Community generell dem Thema Collagen, auch über die wöchentlichen Wettbewerbe hinaus.

Ab August 2020, trieben wir die LMAC School Blog-Reihe voran. Sie beinhaltet Tipps&Tricks und Informatives zu den Themen Bildbearbeitung und Collagen-Erstellung. Die Blogreihe umfasst mittlerweile 16, recht umfangreiche Posts und enthält viel Einstiegswissen.

Im Juli 2021, gründeten wir zudem die LMAC Image Library - Eine Bibliothek von Public-Domain Fotos, Vektor-Grafiken, 3D-Renderings und vielem mehr, von Hivianern, für Hivianer.
Seit einiger Zeit ist die Bibliothek auch auf unserer Webseite durchsuchbar.
Die Bilder darin, können praktisch von allen Hivianern, für alles Mögliche verwendet werden. Zum Beispiel, um damit Titelbilder für Hive-Posts zu erstellen oder als Bildmaterial-Quelle für Kunstwerke.

Es ist jeder Interessierte, egal ob blutiger Anfänger, Profi oder Meister, herzlich willkommen, bei uns mitzumachen!

Quite a read with some good information. I have seen some really good LMAC collages. My image editing is pretty limited at the moment and I am using ms paint for the time being to learn it.

I think it's a good thing to start image editing with MS Paint. After all, it has all the necessary basics, and what we learn with this software can be wonderfully reused when using more complex software.

Hello @wanderingmoon,

That's how I started, with MS Paint. Then I learned that it's possible to do extractions (separate out different parts of a picture) in MS Paint 3D. Eventually, my son told me about GIMP, which is pretty easy to use and has some good filters in it that add a special look to a picture. Also, GIMP allows you to change the resolution (refine it).

All of these are free programs (as you probably know). I can't do the fancy stuff that others in the community can do, but that never stopped me. Making a collage is a weekly tonic :)

If you stop by LMAC Discord, @quantumg can answer any technical questions. I don't have that ability.

I want to learn how to use layers in gimp but am not finding any useful tips for beginners.

I think it will be very useful for those who can't figure out how to make a collage and that's why they don't compete.

I will soon be left without my Photoshop program unless I change my computer, these videos you mention will be very useful!

Thank you for this comprehensive overview of LMAC and collage-making techniques. I was there from the start--collage contest #4--and skill was never a barrier to participation.

I just plunged in and had fun. I've been swimming along happily ever since.

Disculpen ka ignorancia pero a alguien me podría decir que es un collage??? Son como un viaje de fotos? Cierto? Pero en este caso serían fotos de que particularmente???

Y en el collage se pueden usar imágenes propias? Es decir tomadas por mi. ... No se aun que es un collage en si, pero he visto fotos trabajadas... Y si las. Imágenes son tomadas por mi se puede hacer un collage?
