Havana is characterized for being a place full of emblematic spaces: they can be full of history or have a fascinating architecture. Any Cuban, or even a non-Cuban, who sees a photograph of the Capitolio, the Hotel Nacional, the Floridita bar-restaurant, the Bodeguita del Medio or the Tropicana Cabaret, immediately identifies the place and our city, of course.
In this list of iconic places I would also place the University of Havana, with its endless staircase and its Alma Mater (the name by which it is also popularly known): that beautiful woman in a long dress who with her hands outstretched seems to be welcoming every visitor.
La Habana se caracteriza por ser un sitio colmado de espacios emblemáticos: estos pueden estar llenos de historia o poseer una arquitectura fascinante. Cualquier cubano, o incluso no siendo nacido aquí, que observe una fotografía del Capitolio, del Hotel Nacional, del bar restaurante Floridita, de la Bodeguita del Medio o del Cabaret Tropicana, enseguida identifica el lugar y nuestra ciudad, por supuesto.
En esta lista de lugares icónicos yo también ubicaría a la Universidad de La Habana, con su escalinata interminable y con su Alma Mater (nombre por el que también se le conoce popularmente): esa hermosa mujer de vestido largo que con sus manos extendidas parece estar recibiendo a cada visitante.
The university is located in one of the most central neighborhoods of the capital, El Vedado. It was founded in the 18th century and is the first institution of higher education and, therefore, the oldest in Cuba. From the outside you can enjoy the exquisiteness of its architectural design, characterized by the imposing of its buildings, which as they are located on a sloping terrain offer to the eye the idea that they are at different levels.
I was observing for a long time some of its doors, made of metal and glass, which are some of the original elements that the institute maintains. In the center of these is a golden coat of arms, which represented the institution.
La universidad está ubicada en uno de los vecindarios más céntricos de la capital, El Vedado. Fue fundada en el siglo XVIII, y constituye la primera institución de educación del nivel superior, y por ende, la más antigua de Cuba. Desde el exterior se puede disfrutar de la exquisitez de su diseño arquitectónico, caracterizado por lo imponente de sus edificaciones, que como se encuentran en un terreno con pendiente ofrecen a la vista la idea de que están a diferentes niveles.
Estuve observando por largo tiempo algunas de sus puertas, construidas en metal y cristal, y que son de los elementos originales que mantiene el instituto. En el centro de estas se encuentra un escudo dorado, que representaba la institución.
I had never decided to visit it, I looked at it from the outside without imagining what a fantastic place I was missing. In addition to the joy that transmits the youth that fills its corridors.
Among the most impressive details of this place is its landscaping. It is a space full of trees of various types in which stands out its lushness and greenery. There is a park that is right in the center of the main buildings, which is large and very crowded. There is also another park, which although its official name is the Garden of Fame, was known as "El parque de los cabezones", and this once served as a stage for couples in love who wanted to be alone and for young conspirators. I was fascinated to learn such beautiful stories.
Nunca me había decidido a recorrerla, la miraba desde fuera sin imaginar el fantástico lugar que me estaba perdiendo. Además de se respira en ella la alegría propia que transmite la juventud que llena sus pasillos.
Entre los detalles más impresionantes que tiene este lugar está su jardinería. Es un espacio lleno de árboles de diversos tipos en los que destaca su frondosidad y verdor. Existe un parque que queda justo en el centro de los principales edificios, que es amplio y muy concurrido. También cuentan con otro, que aunque su nombre oficial es el Jardín de la Fama, fue conocido como El parque de los cabezones, y este antaño sirvió de escenario para las parejas de enamorados que deseaban estar a solas y para jóvenes conspiradores. Estuve fascinada por conocer historias tan lindas.
To my surprise, I could find in the middle of one of the gardens near the main cafeteria of the university a huge tinajón, I can not help but pay attention to everything that reminds me of the city where I was born, even though I currently live in a city as beautiful as Havana.
Para mi sorpresa, pude encontrar en medio de uno de los jardines cercanos a la cafetería principal de la universidad un tinajón enorme, no puedo evitar prestar atención a todo lo que me recuerde la ciudad en que nací, a pesar de que actualmente radico en una urbe tan bonita como lo es La Habana.
I found interesting the fact that the facades of the faculties are different, however, they manage to transmit harmony in their design because they have in common that they are imposing to the eyes of the observer. They are buildings with thick walls and a fairly high roof strut, as was characteristic of the constructions of that time. Most of them have at least two stories and the predominant colors on the walls are cream and white. Inside the school there are marked streets, so the circulation of medium-sized vehicles is allowed.
Me pareció interesante el hecho de que las fachadas de las facultades son diferentes, no obstante, logran transmitir armonía en su diseño porque tienen como punto en común que son imponentes a los ojos del observador. Son edificaciones de muros gruesos y con un puntal de techo bastante alto, como era característico de las construcciones de esa época. La mayoría tienen como mínimo dos pisos y los colores que predominan en paredes son el crema y el blanco. Dentro de la escuela existen calles señalizadas, por lo que está permitida la circulación de vehículos de mediano porte.

What a beautiful post and how many memories it brings to mind, walking through all those gardens and the different faculties was a regular walk for 5 years that I studied at that prestigious University although my faculty was a few blocks away but we always came to the headquarters for some conferences . I didn't see the famous cafeteria where we always ate pizza 🍕 and I love those parks, very nice post ❤️
I could not imagine that the university was so beautiful, normally we all identify it from the outside but inside it is a beautiful building. I can imagine all the beautiful things that this post could transmit to you, because the energy it transmits is wonderful and the time at the university is one of the best in life. I could not photograph the whole place, but I will definitely repeat the visit 😊
