One of my favorite writers is Jorge Amado, who was born in the state of Bahia, so I wanted to include this region in my trip through Brazil. In his books he tells such interesting stories set in this region that I didn't want to miss the opportunity to be there and feel that vibe. I had already been in the country for 16 days, I had visited the states of Ceará and Pernambuco and the next destination I had chosen was Bahia.
Uno de mis escritores favoritos es Jorge Amado, quien nació en el estado de Bahía, por eso quise incluir esta región en mi viaje por Brasil. En sus libros narra historias tan interesantes ambientadas en esta región que no quería perder la oportunidad de estar allí y sentir esa vibra. Ya tenía 16 días en el país, había visitado los estados de Ceará y Pernambuco y el siguiente destino que había elegido era Bahía.
I arrived very early in the morning and from the airport I took a bus to the center of the city of Salvador, capital of the state, I was going to stay in a hostel located in the Pelourinho, in the historic center.
Llegué muy temprano en la mañana y desde el aeropuerto tomé un autobús hasta el centro de la ciudad de Salvador, capital del estado, me iba a quedar en un hostal ubicado en el Pelourinho, en pleno centro histórico.
I was impressed with the buildings in the area, despite how old they are, most of them are very well preserved and their colorfulness immediately makes you feel happy. There was also a lot of rhythm around, the drums were beating, and it was because in front of the hostel where I stayed is the headquarters of a famous group, Olodum, considered the most important Afro music group in Brazil.
Quedé impresionada con las edificaciones que hay en la zona, a pesar de lo antiguas que son, la mayoría están muy bien conservadas y su colorido te imprime alegría inmediatamente. Además había mucho ritmo por ahí, sonaban los tambores, y era porque frente al hostal donde me hospedé está la sede de una famosa agrupación, Olodum, considerada la más importante de música afro de Brasil.
I felt that the city gave me a great welcome and I was eager to start walking its streets, so that's what I did as soon as I left my backpack in the room.
Sentí que la ciudad me dio una gran bienvenida y tenía muchas ganas de empezar a caminar por sus calles, así que eso hice apenas dejé guardada mi mochila en la habitación.
Salvador is the Afro capital of Brazil and Latin America, at the time of colonization the Portuguese took millions of people out of Africa to bring them to this country and enslave them.
Salvador es la capital afro de Brasil y de Latinoamérica, en la época de la colonización los portugueses sacaron de África a millones de personas para llevarlas a este país y esclavizarlas.
Today their descendants make up the majority of the population, and over the years they have maintained many of their cultural and religious customs, which have blended with those they found here resulting in a vibrant syncretism that is breathed everywhere.
Hoy en día sus descendientes constituyen la mayoría de la población, y a lo largo de los años han mantenido muchas de sus costumbres culturales y religiosas, que se mezclaron con las que encontraron aquí dando como resultado un vibrante sincretismo que se respira por todas partes.
Something that stands out in the city, especially in the historic center, is the number of churches, one could say that there is one for every day of the year, and they have different architectural styles and different degrees of opulence. I show you some of them:
Algo que destaca en la ciudad, sobre todo en el casco histórico, es la cantidad de iglesias que hay, perfectamente se podría decir que existe una para cada día del año, además tienen distintos estilos arquitectónicos y diferentes grados de opulencia. Les muestro algunas:
Founded in 1549, Salvador da Bahia or Sâo Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos (Saint Savior of Bay of All Saints), as it was officially called, was the first capital of Brazil established by the Portuguese colonizers. Its wealth was mainly based on sugar cane, tobacco and cattle, and being a port from where products were exported and imported, it became the most important economic center of the country until well into the 19th century (1820).
Fundada en 1549, Salvador de Bahía o San Salvador de Bahía de Todos los Santos, como se le llamó oficialmente, fue la primera capital de Brasil que establecieron los colonizadores portugueses. Su riqueza estuvo principalmente basada en la caña de azúcar, el tabaco y el ganado, y al ser un puerto desde allí se exportaban e importaban productos, lo que la convirtió en el centro económico más importante del país hasta bien entrado el siglo XIX (1820).
As I stayed in the Pelourinho, which is the most touristic part of the historic center, I started my tour there. As soon as I set foot on its cobblestone streets, the feeling of surprise didn't let go of me. Its attractive architecture, the colors, the music that plays in every corner and the joy that emanates from the people, totally enveloped me.
Como me alojé por el Pelourinho, que es la parte más turística del centro histórico, comencé por allí mi recorrido. Apenas puse un pie en sus empedradas calles, la sensación de sorpresa no me soltó. Su atractiva arquitectura, los colores, la música que tocan en cualquier rincón y la alegría que emana de la gente, me envolvieron totalmente.
The same thing happened to me with the vendors of necklaces, bracelets, etc, that swarm around here, they wrapped me with their speech and although I didn't want to buy anything I ended up giving them a small collaboration for some "fitas" (ribbons) that they tie on your wrist while you make a wish. According to them, it will be fulfilled when the ribbon falls off, these fitas are a symbol of Salvador.
Lo mismo me pasó con los vendedores de collares, pulseras, etc, que pululan por aquí, me envolvieron con su discurso y aunque no quería comprar nada terminé dándoles una pequeña colaboración por unas “fitas” (cintas) que te amarran en la muñeca mientras pides un deseo. Según ellos, se cumplirá cuando la cinta se te caiga, estas fitas son un símbolo de Salvador.
At that moment I did begin to feel something of the Bahian atmosphere that the famous writer Jorge Amado describes in his narrations, and nearby was the foundation that bears his name, and of course, I visited it.
En ese momento sí que empecé a sentir algo del ambiente bahiano que el famoso escritor Jorge Amado describe en sus narraciones, y allí cerca estaba la fundación que lleva su nombre, y claro, la visité.
Then I wandered a bit away from the most touristy places of this historic center declared by Unesco as a World Heritage Site, and plunged into other less traveled streets, to see what I could find.
Luego me alejé un poco de los lugares más turísticos de este centro histórico declarado por la Unesco como Patrimonio Mundial, y me adentré en otras calles menos transitadas, a ver con qué me encontraba.
Beautiful old houses, small hotels and inns and above all artisan workshops, art galleries and used book and antique stores are what was around.
Hermosas casas viejas, pequeños hoteles y posadas y sobre todo talleres de artesanos, galerías de arte y tiendas de libros usados y antigüedades es lo que había por allí.
Undoubtedly there is a bohemian air in this city, everywhere you look there is a lot of artistic and cultural activity, and if you love photography you will have many options for shots.
Sin duda se respira un aire bohemio en esta ciudad, a donde mires hay mucha actividad artística y cultural, y si amas la fotografía tendrás muchas opciones para tomas.
In big cities like this one, it is always good to carry a map, not only to know where you are standing, but also to not miss the most interesting places. I had the one from my tourist guide and another one that I took at the hostel, I had to make the most of the time because I was only going to be there for two and a half days.
En grandes ciudades como esta, siempre es bueno andar con un mapa, no sólo para saber dónde estás parada, sino también para no perderte los puntos más interesantes. Yo tenía el de mi guía turística y otro que tomé en el hostal, tenía que aprovechar el tiempo al máximo porque iba a estar allí sólo dos días y medio.
One of the peculiarities of downtown Salvador is that it is divided in two by a cliff. In the upper part, Cidade Alta, is where the historic center is and in the lower part, Cidade Baixa, you can see more modern buildings, stores, the market and the port, among other things.
Una de las particularidades que tiene el centro de Salvador es que está dividido en dos por un risco. En la parte alta, Cidade Alta, es donde está el casco histórico y en la baja, Cidade Baixa, se pueden ver construcciones más modernas, tiendas, el mercado y el puerto, entre otras cosas.
The scenery from Cidade Alta is incredible, and you can witness the great movement in this fascinating city.
El paisaje desde Cidade Alta es increíble, y puedes presenciar el gran movimiento que hay en esta fascinante ciudad.
Of course I went to see Cidade Baixa, and for that I rode the Lacerda Elevator. You pay a very cheap fare and the elevator takes you down 72 meters, it's also a good photo opportunity.
Por supuesto fui a conocer Cidade Baixa, y para eso me monté en el Elevador Lacerda. Pagas una tarifa muy económica y el ascensor te baja 72 metros, es también una buena oportunidad para hacer fotos.

There was a lot of traffic there, it was difficult to cross the street to get to the market, I guess it is because of the proximity to the port, a very busy place.
Había mucho tráfico por allí, era difícil cruzar la calle para llegar al mercado, supongo que es por la cercanía al puerto, un lugar de mucha actividad.
I really liked the market, there was a lot of creative stuff alluding to the culture of Salvador, the colorful paintings and the clothes and accessories stood out.
El mercado me gustó mucho, había un montón de cosas creativas alusivas a la cultura de Salvador, destacaban las coloridas pinturas y la ropa y accesorios.
The next day I took a bus to see another part of the city, I arrived at the Itapagipe Peninsula and came across the Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, very famous. I was impressed to see on the railings and doors thousands of colored ribbons tied, people place them there and make their petitions.
Al día siguiente tomé un autobús para conocer otra parte de la ciudad, llegué a la Península de Itapagipe y me topé con la Iglesia de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, muy famosa. Me impresionó ver en las rejas y puertas miles de cintas de colores atadas, la gente las coloca allí y hace sus peticiones.
Nearby is the Fort of Nossa Senhora de Monte Serrat, built at the end of the 16th century to protect the port, today it houses the Museum of Weapons and is an important tourist attraction in the city.
Muy cerca de allí se encuentra el Fuerte de Nossa Senhora de Monte Serrat, construido a finales del siglo XVI para proteger el puerto, hoy en día es sede del Museo de las Armas y un importante punto turístico de la ciudad.
From there you can contemplate a beautiful panoramic view of the bay, and in the distance, the urban landscape.

My tour continued to another coastal area that they recommend to visit: Barra. I took a bus and got there, it was already noon and after a somewhat cloudy and rainy morning, the sun appeared shining.
Mi paseo continuó hacia otra zona costera que recomiendan visitar: Barra. Tomé un autobús y llegué hasta allá, ya era mediodía y después de una mañana algo nublada y con lluvia, el sol apareció resplandeciente.
Around here there are many restaurants and bars, and a small beach that looks quite nice.

However, the protagonist of this wonderful environment is the Farol da Barra or Fort of San Antonio, which was the first fortification of Brazil (year 1536 approximately), also the lighthouse that is there is the oldest in South America, installed in the late seventeenth century. The Nautical Museum of Bahia is located in this place.

I went around there for lunch and then guided by my map, I decided to walk back to the historic center, where I was staying, so I could see a little more of the city, I am somewhat insatiable when I am traveling 😂.
Me fui a almorzar por ahí y luego guiada por mi mapa, decidí volver caminando hasta el centro histórico, donde me estaba alojando, así podría ver un poco más la ciudad, soy algo insaciable cuando estoy de viaje 😂.

Sí, es una ciudad con tanta historia, y tiene una energía muy fuerte. Estuve por Brasil hace ya más de siete años. Fui sola, de aventura mochilera jejeje.
Yo viajo sola entre comillas porque siempre estoy en grupo.

Hay que hacerlo al menos una vez en la vida, y luego seguro querrás hacerlo muchas más jejeje.
Estuve durante mucho tiempo ahorrando y planificando la ruta de este viaje porque fueron 40 días y con un presupuesto de mochilera, afortunadamente todo salió mejor de lo esperado :)
