You know that kind of person who acts friendly all the time, but somehow manages to slip in little digs and insults disguised as friendly banter or 'helpful suggestions'? If you ignore it, they keep doing it and are generally just difficult to be around. And if you call them out on it, they act innocent and try to paint YOU as the jerk. Well, that is Jonah.
Contrast that with the kind of joking and fun insults that you often find among groups of guys starting from adolescence onward. While on the surface there are similarities, the latter is playful with the understanding that it's all a game. Meanwhile the former usually seems done out of an ulterior motive, and whenever I've seen that behavior in a guy it has almost always been most pronounced in the presence of a girl or woman they're interested in.
We men are such simple creatures... 😏

It's interesting to see when women do this, because the ulterior motive often seems less clear. Almost like it's a some sort of play to diminish a potential rival before they become an ACTIVE rival. Maybe they just think farther ahead than we do... 😉
Women can be competitive too and may even be better at put-downs.
