Study tips for students: an approach to self-discovery

Learning is something that is unique to each individual. When I was in university, I had some friends who didn't even come to school at all but still passed their exams. And I have some that read a lot and still find it so hard to pass. I have come to ask myself why.

Well, it's well known to me because I went to an inclusive school during my N.C.E. days. It was so funny when I got to the school on my first day. What do I mean by inclusive? It's a school that has all kinds of students in this world. Deaf, either partially or not. Blind, either partially or not. Imbeciles and all kinds of disabilities are in that school.
There is no way you will go to that school, and you will not understand the nature of humans. I know you will be thinking, How will a deaf and dumb person read? Or how will a blind person go to school? Well, that is a topic for another, but I must tell you that both the deaf and the blind are more intelligent than most of us, so we are okay.

Now here is my point: We were taught in that school that everything is possible and everyone has the ability to learn from their own perspective.
There are three categories of humans and their learning processes.

  • The gifted and talented

These are people who are so gifted that no matter what they read or do, they will assimilate it. People like this don't stress themselves; you will see them hardly read. Sometimes they don't even have a note to write in class, and all they do is just go to the class and listen to whatever the teacher wants to say and leave when they want to. But during exam time, all they need to do is borrow a book and read it. Once they have understood everything, in fact, some don't even read at all; all they need to do is have someone explain it to them, and the rest is history. They always know how to find their way, and they even hardly forget.

  • The average learner.

This is the second category; these are people who need to study hard before they can assimilate whatever you are teaching them. They listen in class and still read books on their own. In fact, they do go to tutorials for more explanations.

  • The last one is for low learners:

These are special people who find it difficult to assimilate when they are learning. Do not get me wrong, they assimilate, but then they will have to dedicate their time and everything to reading before they can assimilate, and most of the time they need extra classes so they can understand what you are teaching them. Believe me, it's not their fault, and this is why most times I see parents beating their children because they can't understand something easily.

You need to understand yourself and your children before you say beating is the next thing; in fact, beating is out of it. Because each and every one of us knows how to read and understand. If you ever see anyone fail, it's probably because the person is unable to plan ahead for how he or she will read and understand. And apart from that, there are some other people who used to copy each other.

Just because your friend is not reading doesn't mean you will either. You don't even know the categories to which your friends belong.

So the first question is, do you know yourself? If you do, then you will find it so hard to fail at anything you are doing.
So how do I learn and understand?
Well, I know I fall into the second category, which is the average learner. I'm also not a serious student; the only thing that motivates me to read is because I don't want to fail, because reading isn't my husband, and that is why I love sports a lot. Taking care of human health and other things is what I love doing the most.

Here are the ways in which I read. I love people to explain whatever they understand in class to me in the language in which I understand. I will also read it myself and finally do revisions a day before the exam. Believe me, if I do all these things, it will look like I'm seeing everything inside the exam hall.

I don't know if I'm the only one. I do see everything I read whenever I'm writing. And I hardly even forget it. I only use ideas for things I do not read. Sometimes too, the idea works for me. And another thing is that unlike some people who can read at any place and at any moment, I personally hate anything that can cause distractions for me when I'm reading, but only if you want to join me in reading it. But apart from that, it's not for me.

Well said. But am curious to know how you felt attending same lecture hall with disabled students, like weren't you distracted, or continually feeling hurt for them..
Ah... I could imagine myself feeling pity even though it doesn't call for it.. It must been an experience indeed.
For the reading aspect, i suppose most of us thrive to read to pass and not because is an hobby..lol

How I study to understand is by teaching others. When I am trying to understand a particular subject or topic, I try to explain it to somebody. In teaching that person, I get to understand and it sticks longer. The moment I am telling my younger a particular topic, she just knows I am trying to understand it and she is always patient to listen to me even though I don't make sense to her.
