Personal achievement apart from common success is not what most of us are looking forward to. People usually try to achieve what makes them the center of attention. Money, fame and power are more like temporarily sedative drugs for common feelings of insecurity, worthlessness, anxiety and emptiness. Success according to superficial standards never feels like true success. It never heals the underlying feeling of dissatisfaction, on the contrary, it leaves people thirsty for more. Many lose interest in what they have achieved once it is overlooked by others. They give more weight to others judgment more than theirs.
Real success is not what turning others’ eyes toward us but that makes us cease seeking their attention. It makes one’s heart sing. It spares the need for others’ appreciation. Being financially or emotionally rewarded becomes obsolete, as making progress or acquiring new skill are the only sought-after rewards.

I always used to say that pride for example, is something internal, in the sense that when you are proud of yourself for X reason, you don't need to share it with the whole world.
Incredibly true that the way our society has made us think of success is in a superficial way, according to superficial standards.
Being kind to others, that's success to me.
Overcoming tragedy, that's success to me.
It really does not have to be about getting that new promotion or being wealthy. Regardless, these things are temporary. Everything external can be taken away from us.

Everyone has their own ideas of success, but they may not realize it. They may think that success is what they've been told but only because they haven't taken the time to explore their own heart to see if it agrees.
Yet if their heart does agree, that's fine. Some people are here to play that role and others are not.
I feel that it's important for everyone to find out what they are here to do, and do it well.
