Hive Engine Hacked

in #hive19 hours ago (edited)

I regret to inform the community that hive-engine has been hacked. Around 5am EST it appears multiple systems of EVM bridges were compromised.

Eth and BNB as well as the Solana bridges have been impacted. This also includes the BaseETH/Hive Bridge. This goes across multiple server systems and multiple projects operated by different developers.

Hive, HBD, BTC, LTC, STEEM, DOGE are reporting ok.

The approximate damage to the ecosystem is 85 Eth, 58 BNB, 33k Pol, and 257 Solana. Underlying tokens like GIFU, USDT, BUSD and others have been drained as well. All EVM gateway processes have been shut down.

Please refrain from doing any deposits or withdrawls from those tokens. We'll get the front end updated soon, but for now those gateway services are offline.

We're still investigating. Anyone that wants to help is welcome. I'll be contacting my attorney and looking for remedies that are available working with law enforcement.

11:16 AM EST update - a little bit of good news. I was mistaken that the SPL DAO bridge portion was hacked. That's still operating normally. We took down the bridge on the website as a precaution, but it appears unaffected.

Sort:

Even before the hack, there was abuse and fraud on HE. E.g. ACE was sold just a few months ago as stable coin pegged to 1$, is now completely worthless. This can´t be bad luck or bad market, this is simply fraud. Are you going to do anything against bad actors and fraudsters on HE?

Terrible news! :(
That is a lot of tokens and I am actually surprised Hive is not down more than it is... Is it because no Hive tokens were drained?

Huge Yikes! Glad @sps.dao is safe at least!

no HIVE tokens were drained.

Thank goodness

Whew, thats a huge loss, hope you can find/fix the vulnerabilities quickly and recover from the hack. Maybe Claude Code can help find security bugs in the future.

Thank you for keeping us updated as quickly as possible. I believe cryptocurrency thefts will continue to increase, so creating systems that are hard to hack will be one of the biggest challenges of the future for any decentralized exchange. !PIZZA

Keys at risk?

Your personal keys are not at risk because of this incident as we never have access to them at any time.

Is blurt ok?

This would be the most volume they'd ever get. First stolen, and then dumped when realising what it was.

Do people still blurt?!

I have no idea. I assume so, since those there have burned all their bridges elsewhere.

With AIs like Claude Mythos around (even unreleased), this is likely only going to happen more and more often. I'm not feeling optimistic about the future of crypto right now. 😭

Well it has good and bad sides....

Just as AI can be used to exploit vulnerabilities, it can also be used to improve security; the market just needs to adapt. Furthermore, vulnerabilities and hacks are always present during bear markets—this isn’t the first time it’s happened. Unless you’re just joining the market in late 2024 or early 2025, coming off the previous cycle, and are essentially new to it.

Sad news Aggy, Good luck fixing everything 😰

What is the percentage of the damage? Were the stolen funds all the funds available or was it a fraction of the funds that were in the ecosystem?

That's devastating. Those are huge losses. Really hope the team can track down the vulnerabilities and recover what's possible. Stay strong

It seems to have only affected hive-engine wallets from the EVM networks, but I just sold everything I had from hive-engine... for a moment I thought it was hive-engine that had been hacked.

Ooh nooo. Well you can always buy them back later

We've got to stay calm, hehe.

I am very sorry to hear that.

This is a very critical situation which I hope will be resolved with some crypto recovered.

Sad to hear this news

Why it matters: The post matters beyond the hive community because cross-chain bridge hacks are a major issue in crypto. Bridges are frequent targets since they often hold large pools of funds. Similar incidents in crypto history have caused losses worth millions of dollars. It’s so sad that we at hive have been attacked. I just hope things can be resolved or some what managed. It’s too much of a loss.
