Snow.

in Photography Lovers5 months ago (edited)

Hello everyone! This is my first post about photography and honestly, I don't have much of a clue. Which means I have a lot of learning potential.

I generally take pictures of about everything that catches my eye, and recently had to buy a new phone, so I got one with 3x optic zoom (Motorola Edge 60 Pro) as many times, I'd love to take pictures of birds and such that are further away, but I'd spook them and the digital zoom just doesn't cut it.

The zoom is pretty awesome. That was a 12,7x, so partially digital. My mom took the same picture, and it's a lot more blurry than mine. it was taken through a window on top.

So, as we had some snow, I played around with the camera. In Auto-Mode for now, just doing the focus and zoom. I know a little about the professional functions, but from what I see, the Auto-Mode is quite good. I'm not sure if I could add to it. I think I already used 2 of the pictures in posts, so they might look familiar to those who follow me.

Paths

P1 - They're all vertical. I think paths look best when taking the pic vertically.

P2 - The reed roofs are very typical in the village I grew up at. There's usually a building at the front, and then some sheds and gardening space in the back.

P3 - Mom didn't have the time and energy to cut the hedges back this fall. It does look mysterious now with the snow.

P4 - These vines are dangling down from the roof. A bit creepy, but also cool.

P5 - These are grapes I think. I didn't get the focus quite right, it should be more on the first few, or what do you think? Anyway, they remind me of "The Last of Us".

Landscape

L1 - I tried to use the tree on the right as a vignette. There's a Christmas star on the right side, on top of one of the structures way back. In this climate, they remind me of "The War of the Worlds" - or Half-Life 2.

L2 - That tree line is one of my favorites. I already took some pictures at dawn, too.

L3 - "Early" morning, sun coming up.

Objects

O1 - Wrong time, wrong place. Weird to find it lying there.

O2 - Robbed of their utility, the pipe and the rainwater tub await for warmer days.

O3 - Taken through the window which unfortunately was already covered in water drops itself. I wasn't able to get the focus on the lamp quite right without the spots, though they do add something special. It's not b/w, just came out that way.

That's the best ones. I have a few more, but they don't inspire me, so why post them? How do you select your favorite pictures to show here? As I said, I'm interested in learning a lot about photography, compositions, angles, perspective and all those specific words that I don't even know yet.

As you can see, I marked the pictures with initials so it's easier to refer to them.

I do hope you somewhat liked what you see! And maybe give me some tips and tricks?

Thank you very much for your time & attention!

Thank you all for sharing my work on Reddit! I should do the same... could you help me with groups were I won't get muted?

Beautiful but ever so cold as well! I don't miss it! You sure don't see any of that in Ecuador!

I do see it on regular basis - but another 2,500 higher than where I'm at :-D

Yay, you got a new phone!

This one was definitely the one that made me double take:

Next time you should try taking different angles - like get down on the floor and look up, or take photos from above. I've been trying that lately based on some photos my daughter in law has sent me.

YOur subject matter of course is fascinating to me, especially the thatched roof.

I like this one too - you were right to create interest with those branches. The deep blue at the horizon and those particular clouds - gorgeous. With a little post production the tree and clouds pop - I'm terrible at it but it shows your composition and subject matter is great!

Yes, angles are a good idea! I did a lot of angle-work when doing the pics for my various products. I even put a table in front of two chairs I would get the perfect angle with the background :-D

I didn't have the clothes to do that in the snow, though... I tried to work with some angles, but those pics didn't work out as I wanted, so they're left behind.

That post production is interesting. I don't know much about that. I usually just use contrast, highlights & shadows, warmth, sometimes sharpness - in the regular Windows editor. What did you do? I guess giving more accent to contrast?

@beelzael it's in Germany right? Since u mentioned your village.... I am double minded now

Hey! Yes, sorry, it's in Germany. I was out all day. It's up in the north, I added the Worldmapping pinpoint to it at the bottom of the post :-) Little Village called "Lebrade"

This one is really great

Thank you! 😇 So you don't find the spots from the water drops in close up disturbing?

No, quite the opposite.... I was so thrilled by that photo, that Bokeh, that falling rain and the moment, all together it's great to me

That's awesome, thank you so much! It was a special moment for me, looking out of the window into the snow at night, being home for Christmas and for the first time in almost 15 years.

The objects section does have distinct elements to them. I like the landscapes, the open space ahead covered with snow but the paths section, specifically the third one stood out the most for me, like journeying into a secret world :)

P3 is one of my favorites, too. I ran around that corner onto that path countless times, as it leads to the backdoor where we usually entered. The front door was for guests and the area to be maintained clean. The backdoor lead to a little room where we could hang our dirty clothes and park our shoes.
