SpaceX is launching more than 70 satellites on a ridesharing mission for Spaceflight Industries from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
Spaceflight Industries bought the launch capacity from SpaceX and parceled it out to small customers who could't secure a launch on their own. Therefor the name SmallSat Express
There are a few remarkable payloads on board:
- Eu:Cropis - a zero gravity greenhouse for tomatoes
- Elysium Star 2 - a vessel containing the ashes of more than 100 deceased people
- Orbital Reflector - it does what is says: it reflects. This is similar to the Humanity Star which flew on Rocket Labs "It's Business Time" mission.
This booster has a lot of firsts:
The payload will fly on a reused Falcon 9 Block 5 booster.
This will be the first time a Falcon 9 booster will be reused for the third time
This booster already delivered the Bangabandhu-1 which was the first launch of a Block 5 in May and the Merah Putih satellite which was the first reflight of a flown Block 5 in August.
