What are your thoughts on the separating of Steemit.com and Steemitwallet.com? [10 STEEM Bounty]

2019-04-10 23_34_39-Window.png

Recently, Steemit.com was split into Steemit.com and Steemitwallet.com. Not being an active Steemit.com user, I only get to know about this yesterday. Based on the comments, the sentiments are mostly negative. I have my own opinion on this, but before I write an article on this, I will like to hear yours. So please participate in the poll and provide your comments.

A 10 STEEM Bounty will be placed on this post. This is to encourage participation.

Oh and if you are keen to earn some Steem, do check out the content crowdsourcing event that I am running.

I understand what they are trying to do technically, but I don't understand why the UI has to be screwed up again. Its cool to hide technical improvements behind the frontend. One of the awesomeness of steemit was the integration of the wallet in the website so normal users could just do all in one space.

Also I wish they had told us, so we could have prepared instead of just making all my steemit UI not work anymore.

Lastly instead of just doing these technical things i wish steemit would actually work in bringing functionality that increase utility and makes steem work better for users.

I am glad other teams are driving the development of the blockchain.

Indeed. Splitting into 2 domains seems like an odd decision to me. I am pretty sure they are able to integrate with Steemconnect and provide an experience which is similar to other Steem interfaces. Users will still be prompted each time for their keys when performing sensitive transactions

Dear @knircky

To make things worse, they really didn't test it well.

Just go to your own wallet, and then go to "rewards" and open any of links in your "Curation Rewards History". Example:

https://steemitwallet.com/@city-of-berlin/city-of-berlin-1554388659910-city-of-berlin-feat-katefragola-20190404

Why the hell is it trying to redirect to SteemWallet.com? Someone really made a serious mistake :/ And I've no idea how to even let them know, since communication with Steemit Inc and Steemit community doesnt seem to exist (it's more of one way-street).

Hate is a bit too much but I don't like the change.
It makes steem even more complicated and could prevent people from coming to the steemit plattform.
On the other side they want to improve the security of the wallets, which is a good move.

Indeed. Thanks for the comment

  • I hate it

First of all, I hate it because I am having a very bad experience with it.

Secondly, I hate ads. So, making all these changes, spoiling things and creating a bad user experience because they want to implement ads is not something I can attest to love.

Personally, I am having a hard time because despite saving my login, I always have to login to my wallet (on chrome) and it affects me greatly because I do SBI transactions on daily basis. Sometimes, I have to login twice or more times until transaction suggestions appear for me to just select sbi from the list.

Moreover, making theses changes without prior announcements only relates to what our governments are doing. Increase tax and prices of goods and services at anytime, any day after all they are in charge and there is nothing anyone can do to oppose or go against them.

Thanks for great poll, have nice day! ✌

Thanks for the comment. Just wondering if you have ever tried a different Steem interface (e.g. Steempeak or busy.org)

Posted using Partiko Android

One in a while, I use busy.org to publish my posyt but I have never used steempeak.

When this issue with steemit wallet started, I ran straight to use busy for a wallet transfer but I could not see a way to do the transfer as busy only showed me my wallet details and clicking around yielded nothing.

The good news is that @partiko is working on this feature and once it is released, I may not have to use steemit ever again.

I like how the wallet has its own website now but hate that there was no prior announcement of the change

As i understood it, it is for security reasons. So, I guess that is good right. :-)

Yup there is a security reason for this change

like it and this is why:

  1. separates wallet from content

  2. wallet is theoretically open source, so other dApps can use the code. modify, in their own apps

  3. gave us all a reminder/learning opportunity for passwords/keys

Thanks for the comment. It is indeed a good way for users to learn about how the various password/keys work

Your balance is below $0.3. Your account is running low and should be replenished. You have roughly 10 more @dustsweeper votes. Check out the Dustsweeper FAQ here: https://steemit.com/dustsweeper/@dustsweeper/dustsweeper-faq

No, I understand that it's made for our safety.
But this is such a trouble with copy/pasting these passwords every time you want to claim you rewards or make a transfer... especially if you have more than one account.

Thanks for the comments. Have you ever considered using other Steem interfaces?

  • I like the idea

I like the idea of a safe, secure wallet, and if that means having the two separated, that's fine. I understand that having the wallet and social together limited what they could do with the social side because there was always the wallet to consider. So, now that it's separate, we should hold them to making improvements on the social end, more than throwing up ads and little tweaks. Otherwise, it serves little purpose for me.

Since January, Steemit had been announcing these changes on their blog. I don't know where else it may have been discussed. They probably should have put up the blue banner across the top before they did it, and made it even clearer about the passwords, but the information was available for months—they didn't just do it. So, I think there's some ownership on their part to do something more direct, but I also think it's the responsibility of everyone here to be informed, which probably means keeping track of the steemitblog. I personally feel like they did a good job of communicating on this one.

I don't like the fact that I need to login every time I want to claim rewards. The stayed logged in check box is still not working. Other than that, I have no problem having more than one tab open for different parts of Steemit and the wallet because that's what I do anyway.

re: SteemConnect. There are people who don't trust SteemConnect. There are people who are pushing for KeyChain, the extension. If I'm Steemit, I don't want to be relying on third party stuff that I'm directly in control of. SteemConnect has been down on occasions for one reason or another, and so, I think Steemit made the best move available to them based on what they can control and what they can't.

Now, we'll just have to see if all of this will ultimately be worth it. So far, the track record hasn't been good, but I think they're making strides to be better in many ways, and once they're done with their cost savings projects, maybe they can go back to creating SMTs and growing us out of this bear market. :)

Great comment. SteemConnect is also developed by Steemit Inc. Though now it is a joint project with Busy.org. So I am not sure why it can't be used.

From a security perspective, it makes a lot of sense to separate the identity and authentication layer (Steemconnect) with the rest of the application (Steemit.com and Steemitwallet.com). So I personally don't see much of a conflict

re: developed by Steemit Inc.

I've always understood it as the other way around. Regardless, there are people who aren't happy that anyone has their private keys stored, so whether that's a valid concern, or a great risk, the perception is there. Also, I know I've had trouble getting through steemconnect to log on to a site when the site was otherwise up and running. So, something was bogging down in steemconnect, and I know I've read that it's been down. So, whatever Steemit Inc's level involvement, they've opted for the separate wallet.

  • It is a love-hate relationship

I think in my case this answer will be more correct as so as my opinion about this change is more negative because in my opinion it is not fully worked out. Before it was more correct to enter it to notify all users. In addition, I think not everyone managed to save their parles. Even during the use of the wallet I notice failures in work reflecting that the operation was not completed, although the transaction had already been completed.
Also I understand that it is possible that the purpose and intentions were good. But the performance let you down. And one more thing, not all front-end interfaces have moved to a similar password usage scheme. The poet remains a feeling of some kind of incompleteness.
So as I see positive idea and negative because execution not the best if short explaain my opinion.

Thanks. I guess it could have been communicated better. This is a huge change in terms of user experience

I think it would be better if they had not split steemit. This makes everything more complicated.

  • It is a love-hate relationship

I think it is a good thing to improove security, but since i change from the wallet to my blog and the comments reply section on the website a lot i think steemit got a bit more difficult and time consuming. On my Smartphone i use Partiko where you can still instantly switch from one to another. But on the PC i still like Steemit the most even there are some alternatives like busy.org. So for me it is a bit anoying. Maybe i will find another good interface for steem if they don't change it and if i find an apropriate one.

Thanks for the comment!

It is a love-hate relationship!
I knew it ,when it start changed.
It was very inconvenient at that time.
But she later changed the place - add blog link on the wallet.
So if you to get used to it, it is ok !

Thanks for the comment!

It's a love hate things. Though I really want Steemit to step up but copying whaleshares was just too below them.
I love it and hate it too. 😎

Haha.. thanks for the comment

Dear @culgin

I'm going to vote in a second (I usually avoid dpoll since I found this tool very "awkward"). But I think you should add "other opinion". For instance I don't mind their solution but I cannot agree with ways of "deploying" and introducing those changes. Lack of communication has been very upseting.

To make things worse, they really didn't test it well.

Just go to your own wallet, and then go to "rewards" and open any of links in your "Curation Rewards History". What will happen? You will be redirected to site that doesnt exist ....

Just try it out.

Hi @crypto.piotr,

I don't need any promotion for this post. Thanks for the offer :)

You can actually say that it's a "love-hate relationship" then explain why if you have mixed feelings for the change.

Thanks!

Its a shitty user experience for sure, but if the promised upside of the change could be well worth the pain and inconvenience it causes. It also funny enough may annoy users more so they don't power down lol

I like the added layer of security but I hate the fact that I had to use different keys for different transactions

That's the idea behind having multiple keys. Steemit.com previously requiring our master password for login was actually very insecure

Posted using Partiko Android

@culgin, Voted for I Like The Idea because I've read somewhere that, before Funds coding was integrated with the Steemit.com and there were risks associated when team wants to bring massive changes on Steemit.com, so that's why Steemit Wallet got separated from the Steemit.com so that on Steemit.com massive updates can be implemented. I don't know it's right or wrong but i read this in one of the post and if it's true then it makes real sense.

I think the way Steemit.com handled keys previously wasn't really the best practice. But splitting into 2 domains don't quite make sense in terms of user experience as well. I thought all these can be implemented thru Steemconnect

Posted using Partiko Android

In my opinion Steemconnect step also sounds effective. Let's see.

It's a solid love/hate relationship here..

I like the fact that Steemit Inc is developing stuff and pushing updates. Love the fact both the site and wallet are way more responsive now that they have been seperated..

Not a fan of the need to have 2 different tabs open if I want to use Steemit Inc supplied wallet and blockchain browser.. But other than that.. It's all good.

Thanks for the comment

WE NEED KEYCHAIN INTEGRATION FROM STEEMIT INC!
WE SHOULD ALL DEMAND IT!

I can not understand whats the difference out of links?

If you notice, you are being brought to steemitwallet.com when you need to access your wallet

Posted using Partiko Android

I mean that is there a technical difference between old and new one out of html link and easier auditable data transactions?

As a frontend you can still see how much value stored in them :) They even look delicious😊😁😁

It is a long term decision, not only it allows more safety to everybody which is very important, but it also allows Steemit.com to run ads and start new projects without putting everybody´s wallets at risk.

The only difference now, in practical terms, is that when you click on "Wallet", now it opens a new tab instead of going based on Steemit.com.

Yea, it is certainly better for security

My password app has a hard time with where to put which key, then I have them all scrambled up and have to go back to my saved sheet of keys and copy and paste. It's way more time consuming, And it looks to me like it was for the sake of showing me ads. Where are the SMTs that were supposed to be out in March? This is what we get instead?

I guess the Ads are required to get some revenue going for steemit inc

Posted using Partiko Android

I think it would be better if they had not split steemit. This makes everything more complicated.

I dont like it at all. Because its really complecating and have to open two browsers
