We do not own Bitcoin as it is a number and it is everywhere in servers, computers, etc, omnipresent.
At 02:17:00 they debate whether you can own Bitcoin. A good analogy would be to compare a house key to a Bitcoin passphrase. If somebody made a copy of your house key, is it still your house? Yes. But Bitcoin is not a house but more like a clone of trains on many different computers. The key allows you to access a train cart that exists as clones or copies on thousands to millions of computers, servers, etc, in different countries. So, the train is a good analogy for describing a blockchain or cryptocurrency. Bitcoin is not really owned in the same sense that tangible things are. Bitcoin is digital and yet it is not the same as digital money either in that you cannot really manipulate Bitcoin from a centralized location outside of the permitted rules of transaction ability via having the passwords needed. A similar thing can be argued regarding Bit Torrent. Well, technically speaking, Bit Torrent may not be entirely like Bitcoin at least legally speaking in regards to whether or not you owned the data you view or seed or download or upload or host or share. I'm not entirely sure where I stand in my views of Bit Torrent related matters. I understand some of the distinction made between streaming a video and hosting a video for example. We can talk for days about Bit Torrent. But regardless of that, I love that Bitcoin is omnipresent and therefore not owned. It is not really something that the IRS has the right or ability to get as it is everywhere.
Bitcoin is like a series of mirrors, like a house full of mirrors, and your key allows you to see some of the mirrors. And then you can transfer Bitcoin so to speak on the mirrors via a flashlight. Do you like my analogy?
Depends on how you define ownership and a major difference is that the money in your online fiat banking, unlike cryptocurrencies, is a digital personification or illustration of paper money. Well, they're trying to do away with paper money but that has been the standard and before that we had the gold standard where the paper bills were supposed to represent gold and you used to be able to redeem the bills for actual gold bars. Now, you should still be able to get bills for the digital money you have in your bank. And you can own a bill. You can own a pile of gold. But Bitcoin is like Clone Troopers from Star Wars or a train that is copied and mirrored on many different computers. But you can't hold the train in your hands. You can't really do anything you want with the train outside of the set rules. You cannot hide it. The Bitcoin passphrase is like a house key and yet every computer in the world is like your house door because you can try to enter in the Bitcoin passphrase in any computer that is online. You cannot really own Bitcoin as it never leaves the train, it is always on the train regardless of whether or not you have access to it or not. Also, when you are given Bitcoin, you are actually never given Bitcoin like you would when you get or buy a car. Nobody comes to you to sign over exclusive rights to a Bitcoin. So, think of Bitcoin like you would a rented hotel room. So, owning a Bitcoin would be like owning a rented room in a sense. And yet you can't really go inside Bitcoin like you can go inside a hotel room or an actual train cart. The Bitcoin train is something you see and interact with but you don't really touch. It is digital and not tangible. Bitcoin is everywhere and nowhere all at the same time. But your online banking money is in the centralized bank servers and they represent fiat money which are supposed to be in cash or actual gold originally. And governments and certain banks sometimes print more dollar bills. They create more money out of thin air. But Bitcoin is not like that.
