English:

Our 3 years old Kobold princess wants to learn mathematic :-D and she seems to really have fun with it, especially when she is trying to use her fingers to count.

Talking about counting with fingers, I noticed that our little princess tends to be more Indonesian than German in this aspect ^_^.
Indonesians would use their forefingers to make a "1" sign whereas the Germans would rather use their thumb.
Respectively... Indonesians would also leave out the thumb when they want to give a sign for "2", "3", "4" as well and the "precious" thumb would only come out when the sign "5" is needed :-D.
The Germans instead would start counting using their thumb and end it up with the pinky finger, and our little girl is exactly doing it like the Indonesians do :).

Let's just wait and see whether it would change over the time, with the premise that we'd still live in this country for the next few years.

Deutsch:

Your little princess is very clever. It's good to watch how she learns mathematic via your video. You are "SuperMom", you always teach her very well in every aspect.

Yeah! Thai people have the same counting fingers as Indonesians; we use our forefingers to make a "1" sign and the "precious" thumb would only come out when the sign "5" is needed, too.....

Thanks for pointing this out, I didn't notice before that "the Germans would start counting using their thumb and end it up with the pinky finger".

Ah! It's great to know that your little princess is exactly doing it like the Indonesians do....

She is really cute with glasses and has long hair now.

Thanks so much for sharing. ;)

Now I am getting curious about how the Thais doing it?
Do they count fingers like Indonesians or like Germans?

Ah! We count fingers like Indonesians do. Yeah! I'm very glad that we have so many things alike! ;))

Hahaha that´s funny :) Btw it´s interesting to see how different nations use different fingers to count :D In my Czech homeland, we use the same style as the Germans.

@tipu curate 3

Yes, I do think it is very interesting to find it out :).
She picked up my style in counting fingers :-D.
It sounds probably not so surprising since children spend more time with the moms afterall.
However most of children of my indonesian fellow citizens living here in Germany are counting like the German do anyhow, that's why I was a bit surprised when I noticed her counting like me ^_^.
We'll see in a year later whether it would change.

Very interesting about the fingers culture!! I wonder why the German people use the thumb as number one!?

Have a nice weekend.

Perhaps because it is their tendency / custom to do things in the proper order?!
Moreover, 1 is considered to be the best mark for Germans, so it is more suitable to use the thumb as a sign for 1, probably?

Thank you very much for the explanation! This makes a lot of sense. So, number 1 is highly regarded as the sigh of success and accomplishment; very competitive cultural trait! LoL

Isn't it interesting the little things that they do that we wouldn't necessarily pay attention to in most circumstances but at milestones like this, they amaze us. Our son started to count in a fashion and he understands that it's basic counting. When he wants to say that there's a lot of something, say squirrels, he says "one and one and one and one and one" in a way to count them up! Neither my wife or I do that but he understands it and I think it's great.

He also did some basic addition (or subtraction depending on how you think of it lol) the other day! We were at the grocery store and I asked him to get 4 of something and he gave me two. I said okay, I have two here now how many more do I need to make 4? He went and grabbed two and was very excited with himself when I congratulated him for getting it right. These little ones are a lot of fun when teaching them things goes well lol not so much when it doesn't!

Oh yes....that's true. They actually can understand things more than adults have generally thought.
Their logic sometimes seems odd to us, but if we contemplate for a moment, we can actually see that their way of thinking is not actually wrong at all. We are adults sometimes lack of creativity LOL.
