My First Time Trying Kombucha: From one addiction to another.

Technically, this isn't my first time drinking kombucha. My first exposure to kombucha was four years ago. Then, the following year, I was able to taste Kombucha in a vegan all-you-can-eat buffet in Bali. My first impression of it was that it tasted sour and just like regular tea without the sugar. That time, I did not know about the health benefits of it. But after that trip, I began researching kombucha and attempted to make it.

For those of you who don’t know about Kombucha, a kombucha is a fermented green or black tea. The ingredients of kombucha that I know include sugar, scooby, and tea. You can find more basic information in this wiki kombucha. But today, upon my searching, I found more varieties than green and the black tea. There are even butterfly-pea kombucha and rosella kombucha. As an example of what I found, there are some luxurious kombuchas that I found while researching the best kombucha to try.

So, back in the day, I failed to make the Kombucha. My attempt failed because of the lack of my apparatus and that l should have used store bought scooby. After that attempt failed, I sort of forgot about it. Until a friend keeps mentioning about brewing kombucha. Then, that prompted me to try exploring this fermented tea world.

There are some places that sell kombuchas which are mostly coffee shops and co-working spaces. Not only the original kombucha, there are some flower and fruity kombucha as well.I found a place called Kyo Kombucha that sells original( regular kombucha) and yogurt. Their price was also the most reasonable among other places. So I ordered one kombucha and a yogurt. Apparently, they were running out of yogurt. The store lady told me over the phone that I can switch it to another kombucha which is 300ml. In the end, I ended up getting 2 of the 300ml Original Kombucha.

When it arrived, I couldn't believe that they used glass bottles because the price was only 1.6$.The design was minimalistic but luxurious.I mean, you can put a whiskey there, not a lot would notice. The lid has a rubber cap which secures the bottle more. I think the rubber is there to ensure its hygiene. On the sticker, there is some information about the ingredients used. I mean, you wouldn’t know it’s kombucha unless there's information on the bottle. So, from the package side, it was hygienic and had a luxurious feel to it.

When I had my first sip, it was too sweet. I could taste the fermentation process and it tasted like fermented cassava. It was a new experience again especially after years of not tasting any kombucha. I can’t say that I really like it as it was too sweet for my taste. But overall, it was fresh and refreshing. I think it would be better if I chilled it more before drinking it.

I can see myself exploring this kombucha world and taste more variants than the original ones. I especially want to also explore the luxurious kombucha rather than the regular green and black kombucha tea. So, that’s the story today, from one addiction to another possible new addiction.

What is this ? it it tonic ?

Kombucha isn't a tonic I suppose(depends on the definition of tonic). But generally, when people say Kombucha, It's fermented tea made with a SCOBY ( symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast ). The name itself could be the the misapplication of Japanese words: kombucha, kobucha (which translate to "tea made from kelp"), kobu, konbu (which mean "kelp") and cha (meaning "tea").

Hello @macchiata I've heard much mention of Kombucha but didn't give it much thought. Now you've aroused my curiosity, so I must research it.
I get the feeling it would be like a comforting "tonic" when feeling under the weather.
That Gingersnaps Kombucha appeals to me a lot :)

hahaha yeah, you have to check it out! I found that there's also coffee kombucha, so maybe it's something that piqued your interest as well. Perhaps, it could feel like a comforting tonic especially when taken if you're sick. Yeah, you're the 2nd person who said the Gingersnaps was appealing. Unfortunately, I can't take ginger too much but I am going to try the rosella one next time. Let me know if you can find a good kombucha in the future!

Thanks for the interesting Info! It's been long since I drank Kombucha. It actually tastes good.
I think I will try making some myself now :)

Ohh! that'd be great if you could show us the process of making it. My kombucha was alright and refreshing. Good luck making the kombucha!

I'll do my best :D
And I'll only show my kombucha if I actually manage to get it right … and don't burn everything :)
