NeedleworkMonday: Book review "Vintage design workshop" [Eng/Ger]

Why this book? / Warum dieses Buch?

This book was on my Amazon wishlist for years. I needed some "retail therapy" the other day and browsing through the list I saw this book for under 10€ incl. shipping. Lots of pictures and it had been recommended in a podcast for being great if you want to knit sweaters - come to me, my dear book :)

And I wasn't dissapointed when the book came and I looked through it. Lovely pictures of old patterns made with today's yarns and know how. But more than that: Heaps of information for knitting sweaters and other projects that's useful if you don't use exactly the same yarn and have exactly the same gauge and exactly the same body size specified in the pattern. And who does?

What makes this book a treasure trove of information for knitters are the explanations in it: 170 pages about finding the right yarn, calculating yardage and weight and adjusting width and lenghts, shoulders and sleeves and so on. Everything with pictures and drawings and well explained sample calculations.

If only one sweater I make fits well because of this book it's 10€ well spent but I think I will consult this book quite often :)

Please excuse the quality of the pictures: the pages in the book weren't easy to photograph.

What's on my needles

  • My scarf is at 66 cm - slow work, I don't think I will wear it this winter...
  • I'm planning a new "simple knitting" project, a big shawl to get rid of my surplus of unwanted sock yarn :)

It's really cool how even in 2018 some of the best reference material is still hiding in books, waiting to be discovered :)

Very healthy retail therapy purchase! I wish mine were so useful :P

I like learning with the new ways like videos - learning a new knitting technique is much easier if you can watch it a dozen times and in slow motion. That wouldn't work with a teacher ;)

But you're right, nothing beats going to your "reference library" and consulting the experts.

You are responsible....(ahem, no, not really) I yesterday ordered the book. I could not resisit, but I not only blame your wonderful review but me being on pain medication :-DDD
But I have no idea what I will do when the book arrives, I ccannot (should not) start another project.
Will you make something inspired by your book?

I have a hibernating sweater were I have no idea what to do with the neckline. This book will surely help with the calculations :)

Perhaps you can use this books to alter the sleeve length of your last sweater ;)
runsandhides

Yeah... thank you for the tip with the sleeves, I absolutely want to shorten them (bold lie - in reality I am dreaming of making a sweater or cardigan with puff sleeves with the help of this book)
And with the neckline... this can change so much. I once made a simple sweater were I followed the pattern word for word and the neckline looked so strange, much to wide and it had no stylistic connection to the rest of the sweater... I hope you find a solution.

I added this book to my wish list. Thanks for sharing.

I have never knitted a garment with darts, @muscara. I'm impressed by this technical book; thank you for highlighting it :D

I choose the darts as an example because I liked the drawing where you can see how the stitches make a curve - you can see why they would be useful. in a way these short-rows are the same you use when you knit the heel of a sock.

Fun patterns! I hope you get some great ideas and techniques from the book. It looks very useful.

As I said - if only one garment fits better or I'm spared one unraveling of several day's work it's been money well spent :)

This book sounds really good, I get really frustrated about fitting standard patterns (I don't know anyone who is the correct size and shape in all measurements). I also love some of the patterns, I bought a similar softback book of retro designs which have some lovely ideas - and with this book, you can adapt them to suit. Thank you for sharing, this is going straight on to my Christmas wish list!

I'm happy that you like the book - seems my reviewing it was a good idea :)
My next #needlworkmonday will be something different with a poll and an SBI-giveaway :)

Oh, that sounds exciting!

A good practical advice book is really a great treasure. I have two similar books that help me with knitting

You can find a lot of things browsing the internet but nothing beats a good book or two in your 'reference library'.

Aren't they? And if you have a basic knowledge on knitting garments this book will give you everything you need to change things you don't like in a pattern.
