What’s next for Germany? / Was kommt als nächstes für Deutschland? [ENG/DE]

in #germany3 years ago

I am fascinated by the outcome of the recent election in Germany. There are many possibilities for the negotiations to arrange the next government.

The prior ruling CDU/CSU coalition was defeated. It was not by a large majority but was nonetheless a rout.

What will happen next?

I am guessing that it will result in a coalition government made up of three factions. Probably a strange combination. Center-left at the core, SPD having gotten the most support from voters. The Greens took third place, so that faction would garner a seat at the table. The third partner might be FDB, of the center-right.

The FDB might prefer to partner with the CDU/CSU. The problem with that is with such an alliance, they would still be short of a majority.

How could the conservative CDU/CSU alliance possibly form a government? I doubt that they would agree to negotiate with the xenophobic AfD. And certainly not with The Left.

Might the CDU/CSU be willing to be junior partners to the SPD for a grand centrist unity government? I would guess that the SPD would only accept that as a last resort.

I would be interested in what the Germans here have to say. Yes, I studied German in high school, but that was a long time ago. I will therefore rely on Google Translate.

Thanks for this interesting post.
Most people in Germany see 2 options:

  • SPD (left-center), Greens, FDP (liberal)
  • CDU/CSU (right-center), Greens, FDP

Another grand coalition (but this time under the leadership of SPD) is rather unlikely.

In any case, it will become more difficult to govern, as the interests of 3 parties have to be regarded for each decision. Short Germany?

Short Germany?

Hell yeah, and long Switzerland. Funny accent, but way healthier life mentality.

FDP (liberal)

Liberal as in “classical liberal” rather than liberal in the sense that it’s now used in America?

Yes, liberal as in classical liberal, liberal concerning economy (a very weak form of laissez-faire) and liberal concerning social liberties.

You almost fooled me with the title. Was so close to asking you if you're German, but after I read the post it was clear.

What do you call someone who’s fluent in three languages?

Trilingual.

What do you call someone who’s fluent in two languages?

Bilingual.

What do you call someone who’s fluent in one language?

American.

True. You're lucky though that the rest of the world "has to speak your language". A few days ago I spoke with a couple of Americans visiting Romania and told them they're so lucky to be born over there, speaking the language and having the freedom "to conquer everything".

Yeah, I took German in school long, long ago and have picked up a smattering of Spanish along the way, but know only bits and pieces of other languages. I took one semester of Chinese in college and only just barely passed.
