Tag Protocol
How To Lose Fear and Gain Audience Using Tags
I read a lot of posts every day. I consider it part of my well being to view at least 50. I don’t just read them, I always look at presentation with the eye toward how I can make my posts more appealing. How are the pictures posted? How is the bold print used? How long are the paragraphs? How many words?
I look at the scorecard at the bottom. You know the one. Votes and comments. I pay particular attention to any post that gets lots of comments and lots of upvotes. How can I make my posts more like these?
The last thing I look at critically is the tags. What did this post use? Is that why it got the votes/comments that it did or didn’t? How can I improve my tags?
I see a lot of obvious mistakes in the tags.
What Is The Tag System?
This article is about Steemit and the Steemit tag system.
At the simplest tags are part of the master filing system for the platform. There are tens of thousands of posts on Steemit every day and the number increases every day. Obviously the platform needs a filing system so that the patrons can find things. How would it be if every post was filed simply in the order it was received? Not good. That database would soon become unsearchable just due to sheer numbers.
Tags provide ‘pigeon holes’ to sort posts with. It’s a sort of additional hierarchy that allows search functions to ‘pre qualify’ posts that someone wants to see.
On Steemit you are allowed to use up to 5 tags. The first tag is the ‘primary’. That is going to be where your post is archived under that specific tag. The other 4 will be secondary search terms to allow the system to serve up qualified answers to search queries.

Why Are Tags Important?
Everybody should be aware of the tag column in Steemit. On the left hand margin of your feed page titled All Tags. The top 49 tags are listed there and sorted in terms of popularity. Life is first followed by photography, steemit, kr (Korea) and introduce yourself. Tags on Steemit are always listed in lowercase letters with no spaces between words (eg: landscapephotography)
If you scroll to the bottom of the tag column you will get to the ‘View All Tags’ link. If you click that link you will be shown all the multiple use tags that are used by authors. Not only is that list sorted alphabetically, but it has some columns for Posts, Comments and Payouts.
For instance, if you scroll down to the most popular ‘life’ tag you will see that it has over 650,000 posts, almost 700,00 comments and over 10 million SBD in payouts. In contrast the landscapephotography tag has over 4200 posts, near 19,000 comments and more than 90,000 SBD in payouts. Huge difference.
In addition each tag on this list has an embedded link that will take you to the TRENDING page for the specific tag. There you can see what is currently the most popular posts in the tag you are considering.

Common Mistakes
Don’t just list the most popular tags. Try to match your post to your tag. Putting a nature post in the introductions section just because it is more popular will only bring you scorn and the kind of attention that you don’t want. There have been some flags given for mis-posting.
The introductions tag is for introductions. A lot of people follow the introductions tag and tend to vote them up if you are a brand new Steemian. Those that post a second introduction post tend to not get the love simply because they aren’t new.
Unless you are writing about the platform, steemit is a wasted tag. You are already filed on Steemit if you are posting there.
You are really looking for the Goldilocks equation here. You want your tags to represent what you are posting about, but not competing with everybody and everything. There is a tag selection that is just right.
First Tag Is Critical
You want to chose your first tag very carefully. This is the tag that determines your overall category that you will be shown in and is the tag for the trending function.
You need to be careful to not oversell your post. Is it a photography post? Photography is a huge topic, do you want to compete for attention with all the other photographers that will post today? Perhaps you want to consider landscapephotography or portraitphotography or macrophotography. All three of those will put you in a sort of a subset of the photography class and you will be shown with others that are posting the same.
Use Your Tag Line Carefully
Not every tag can really help you, but some can be used to great effect.
There are several countries and regions that really support their members. Korea, Indonesia, Nigeria, Canada and Aceh are among them. If you are from one of those places and support your fellows the tag line is perfect for that.
Most contests require a tag entry to compete for the additional prize that they offer. A perfectly good use of the tag line.
There are upvote bots that require a tag line entry to qualify for an upvote.
There are several societies that can give you added views and value for your post if you include them on the tag line. Since this is an Adsactly post we will discuss their program.
By just including adsactly as one of your tags you are welcome to put your post in the post promotion bin. One post is chosen every day for the Adsactly post of the day which is very nicely supported by our members both financially and in viewership.
What To Do?
Careful choice of tags can make a huge difference in how your post is viewed and voted. You can keep track of which lead tags served you best pretty easily. Find the tags that work the best for your style and content. Don’t waste your tags, they are really important to you.

Tags are useful in keeping up with your content and some of them also help improve viewership numbers.
I wonder what the most useful tags are. From my experience #steemit and #introduceyourself have alot of eyes on them daily.
It's easy to know which tags are the most popular, the list on the feed page is sorted by popularity. The real operative question is which ones are the most useful?
Is it a good idea then to go for the less popular tags that corresponds with our post ?
@bigtom13
I can say that this is a kind of post which every new steemian should read carefully.Because I already made some mistakes about using tag.Now I have learned how to use tag. Thanks for the post.@upvoted
I'll tell you, I got this knowledge by making huge mistakes. I don't know that I made every one, but I made more than my share!
This is going to be very helpful for all the new steemian.I had not much idea about using tag effectively, now I am clear about using tag. Thanks to @adsactly for such useful post.@upvoted and resteemed
Thank you. Adsactly and I are both dedicated to helping all our Steemit compatriots. The more I researched this post the more I learned.
This post has really enlightened me on the issue of tagging. Many of us makes the mistake of using wrong tags, just because they are popular, i hope this helps.
My question now is that, since my post can be seen in the four secondary tags, will my post be deleted completely from them and moved to a new one if i edit my post and use new tags?
You have a certain amount of time that you can edit your tags. I believe it to be 8 hours, but I am not completely certain. The tags are fluid until the time expires.
Thank you for your response, that means if i edit my postand change tags after the 8 hours window, my post wont leave the old tag and wont reflect in the new tags i changed to?
Yes. I also got a new bit of information from a reader: You can't edit the first tag at all. Not even for a minute.
This is a very informative and useful post. Thank you for sharing with us. I think it's important to emphasize that tags to upvote communities, can really help out your payout. Like this "adsactly" tag.
Absolutely. Several of the communities have a high member support which leads to more votes. Really good deal.
Yes, tags has been an issue to both old members and newbies here. I have even seen cases where people uses other people username as tags (that must have come from tagging system on Facebook). Also I don't really support the use of popular tags as your post get hidden within few minutes. So like you said, sometime it's better to use a sub tag of the main tag.
Absolutely. That 'New' heading scrolls pretty fast. You can be 30 spaces down the list in one minute. That's when your tags really play the part.
Yes. The choice of tags is a very important one. I discovered that so.e curators are interested in some tags, and using them properly gives my post the opportunity to be seen. When I got an upvote from @curie, I tried to study the reason and discovered that it was not a random thing. It was as a result of the quality content and the perfect tagging.
By the way, thanks for this wonderful piece. Now I have learnt the wisdom behind using subset tags. Thanks
You are absolutely correct. Bad tagging won't wreck good content, but good tagging can go a long ways to making certain that your post gets seen. Most curations use the tagging system.
I agree that using more specific tags instead of broad ones can help you stand out from the rest. It can even help with branding and awareness for your blog.
I really think it might be THE key to personal branding. With so many posts, how do you stand out? In a specific niche.
Your post can really help me a lot, which I didn’t know how to use tag to attract more views before.
This teaches me how to use tag more wisely.
Hope you can post more topics like this
Always support you :)
Thank you. Education and information is a vital part of what we do at Adsactly. I'm sure there will be more posts in this vein, and our archival posts have quite a lot too.
thanks for the info. i also figured out through trial and error that you cannot edit the first tag, even for spelling errors. the 1st category where it tags to, it stays tagged to.
Wow. There is a thing I didn't know. You can't edit the first tag at all. Thanks for a really helpful bit of information.
Thank You!
I wondered about this tag and how to make best use of it since I am still new at steemit. I have upvoted you and followed you as well. Thanks for sharing
It's confusing at best. I'm glad you got something useful out of this.
Now I can finally get some visibility with tags, thank you for these tips
Really glad to help. If this made your journey one iota easier that makes me very happy.
Smart, deep angles on tags that as a minnow I had not yet come to conceptualize. Thank you @bigtom13 and @adsactly 😊
It's very informative and helpful post @adsactly.
When I first joined the platform I wondered why I was not getting any views or upvotes. It took me awhile to realize it was because I was tagging posts incorrectly. I would use one or two tags I made up that I thought were relevant. This is not the best way to tag posts. So this is very important to choose the tags correctly.
Thanks for sharing this great information with us.
Stay blessed!
Researching this post I spent quite a little time on the 'big list' of tags. I got some really good ideas for tags that I will try on my personal posts. I'll let everybody know, but I suspect I'll improve by a measurable amount.

Greetings friend @adsactly, I'm going to start putting his advice into practice, what about the labels was not clear on that. thanks for the recommendation
It's like looking at second birth of AdWords. The beginnings of rudimentary Steemit SEO or should I say ASO (Audience Search Optimization).
I don't think it has the impact of SEO, but I really think it makes a difference.

Glad you learned something. That just makes my day.
Its your kindness sir
I always check if the person voted for themselves :)
Had to re-steem this post, it is so good and full of useful tricks for starters,
I don´t make any of those mistakes, but you warned me about the "competition" for attention in the big tags...
Considering how small my account is, I´m very likely to stop using the most used tags and use more specific ones.
I use 'motorcycle' tag on all my personal posts. It is a very specific tag, but a few of us are trying to establish a community here on Steemit so we use it routinely. Another use for tags...
Well written and related, newbies will find this helpful. Initially, I looked at the popular post and try to be part of it. In less than 2 days, I remember search engine and quickly related that to what is happening on steemit. So I took it serious and choose the right tag for all my post.
Thanks for sharing
2 days? It took me a lot longer than that to figure out that I was leaving views on the table because of my tag choices.
Thank you for the great reminder @adsactly...
Thanks for the info @adsactly . upvote and resteemed :)
is interesting info.
@adsactly. Thank you this is very helpful. I am still learning and this helps a lot.
Mr @adsactly
Can I join in. Each of your posts, I want to be your followers and I want to succeed megikuti you
I find a lot of this difficult to follow; I find more often than not when I use a more specific tag, particularly one that's not been used yet, it often won't allow me to submit the post until I remove it and stick to one of the more conventional tags. And only five tags? I come from other platforms that allow for many more than five, even though I normally only use around three to five. Plus, I have the added disadvantage of not being able to include pictures and what not all the time, unless I've got a sighted person looking over my shoulder. Hence, I'm having even more issues reaching the top.
The first tag has to be a 'known' tag off the list. For the other 4 you can use what ever you wish. It's about how your post is filed for the system,
I've noticed that sometimes even when I use an official tag, I still can't post until I clear the others.
This post has really enlightened me on the issue of tagging.
You;have a certain ;amount of ;time that you can edit your tags I believe it to be 8 hours but I ;am not completely certain?The tags are fluid until the time expires??;
