Mercusuar ini ada tiga di dunia, selain di Pulo Aceh, Kabupaten Aceh Besar, Provinsi Aceh, juga terdapat di Belanda dan Kepulauan Karibia. Di Belanda, tower yang berkaitan dengan sejarah ini sudah difungsikan sebagai museum, sementara dua lagi masih aktif sebagai mercusuar.
Mercusuar selesai dibangun bertepatan dengan ulang tahun ke-65 William III. Tak hanya mercusuar ini saja, semua bangunan yang selesai pada masa itu didedikasikan untuk raja. Maka, Willem’s Toren atau Menara William juga ada di Hollands dan Kepulauan Karibia. Kini, yang berfungsi hanya mercusuar ini dan di kepulauan Karibia saja.
Menara beton bundar setinggi 85 meter Merah Putih, Mercusuar William’s Toren III, itu peninggalan Belanda yang dibangun 1875. Menara yang ada tiga di dunia ini menambalkan nama Willem Alexander Paul Frederik Lodewijk (Raja Willem III). Berada di rimbunnya hutan Desa Meulingge, Kecamatan Pulo Aceh, Kabupaten Aceh Besar, Provinsi Aceh.
Untuk bisa ke lokasi mercusuar yang dibangun bertepatan dengan ulang tahun ke-65 Raja William, berada di komplek seluas 20 hektare yang dulunya dihuni perwira-perwira Belanda ini, Anda menggunakan jalur laut dengan transportasi boat nelayan pengangkut barang dan ikan yang setiap hari berangkat (kecuali Jumat), pada pukul 14.00 WIB, lewat dermaga kayu Lampulo, Banda Aceh.
Perjalanan ditempuh sekitar 2 jam, menuju Desa Gugop, Pulau Breueh. Jika Anda kembali ke Banda Aceh, dari Desa Gugop boat berangkat pukul 08.00 WIB. Biaya menuju Pulo Breueh maupun kembali ke Banda Aceh yaitu sebesar Rp15K/orang.
Apabila Anda membawa sepeda motor (disarankan membawa sepeda motor sebab belum ada transportasi umum), maka Anda akan menambah biaya Rp45K dengan rincian Rp15K untuk jasa kuli angkut sepeda motor ke atas boat, Rp15K untuk angkut, dan Rp15K lagi untuk jasa menurunkan sepeda motor.
Perjalanan menuju mercusuar Willem’s Toren Pulo Aceh melalui depan SDN Meulingge cukup menantang karena jalan yang masih terjal. Jalur utama ke sana dari depan SD Negeri Meulingge.
Jalan menuju ke tower, jalan membelah hutan. Jalan penuh tanjakan dan turunan yang terjal, menyempit dengan batu cadas dan berlubang, jadi ekstra hati-hati sehingga sepeda motor tidak terperosok ke jurang.
