Amazing Nature - Slug

in #amazingnature5 years ago

This is my entry @adalger Amazing Nature Contest - as of August 2020 - #02.

As I was watering plants inside our house, this slug came out of the pot and seemed to enjoy staying out that I had the time to filmed it and took pictures of it. So what are slugs?

SLUG or LAND SNAIL

  • is a kind of terrestrial gastropod mollusc shell-less common pest that lives in a cool weather place. It has an optical and smaller tentacles. The upper are called optical tentacles used for light sensing and are the eyes of a slug. The lower pair smaller tentacles are used for feeling, tasting and provides the sense of smell.

It moves in a rhythmic waves by contracting muscles on the underside of the foot. It secretes a film of mucus for protection and navigation system.

Slugs produce 2 types of mucus: one is thin and watery, the other is thick and sticky. The thin mucus spreads from the foot’s center to its edges while the thick mucus spreads from front to back.

This mucus is produced that helps to smooth the slugs path across the ground and this mucus trail will find their way back to the tunnel and feeding sites.

Slugs are considered herbivorous feeders and eat like leaves, flowers, fruits, mushrooms, lichens and decaying plant material. They also feed on carrots, peas, apples and cabbage.

Their predators are hedgehogs, foxes, badgers, birds, toads and ground beetles. Some reptiles that feed on slugs are snakes and lizards.

Like every living organism, it has also a role in an eco system by providing as a crucial food source for other wild life and eating decaying plant material and fungi. In some agricultural places they are considered serious pest as they can destroy foliage faster than plants can grow. As a measure to control the increase of slugs they are using a biological control method that are effective baits against the wide range of common slug species.
