3D-printing guns is now legal in the USA | Cody R. Wilson re-launches online library of gun blueprints

Cody Wilson won his lawsuit against the US Government

and now he's allowed to re-open his repository for 3D-printable guns.

Five years ago, Wilson first completed the printing of his first pistol - The Liberator. Shortly after, he was forced to take down his website because the US Government accused him of exporting guns to foreign countries. However, Wilson argued that he was just sharing code, which is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution. Wilson managed to blur the lines between the First and Second Amendments.

"If code is speech, the constitutional contradictions are evident," Wilson explained to WIRED when he first launched the lawsuit in 2015. "So what if this code is a gun?”

In March of 2018, Wilson settled the lawsuit with the Government and now his repository - DEFCAD - is back online. While uploading blueprints is already possible, downloads will be enabled on August 1st.

There are already a couple of blueprints on the website, among which various rifles and pistols, as well as individual parts and the actual 3D printer used to build The Liberator.

The implications of Cody Wilson's project are huge for Americans. Any American will now be able to build as many untraceable firearms as they want in their own home.

The Gun Control Debate is over

The implications of the settlement are massive.

Even if guns are prohibited in your state, you'll still be able to get one, since a visit to the gun store isn't needed anymore, and nobody has to know about you obtaining a gun.

Even more interesting: how will the governments of other countries react to this development? In today's day and age, accessing information of the internet is easily done with a VPN to circumvent any regulations put in place. Will Europeans and others be able to 'download a gun' soon? The answer seems to be yes, as the only thing you need is an internet connection and some raw materials at home. If even the 3D printer can be built on your own, gun prohibition will be virtually impossible anywhere.
