Lessons from Whitney Cummings

Hey Steem Community,

So recently I've learnt who Whitney Cummings was through Netflix and immediately loved her comedy. She's animated, witty and super funny.

A few months later, I came upon a brief section in the Tim Ferris book "Tools of Titans" in which she gives general advice in relation to her career and life. I found that several themes she mentions are very relatable and should be shared. I've summarized the 3 most important points below;

1) Perfectionism leads to procrastination, which leads to paralysis

When you try to perfect a task (for example at work), this will cause you to hold off and keep holding off until you either receive perfect feedback or every little part of your project is as you imagined. Usually, while working things will come up in which you didn't originally plan for or expect. This is where you might start to think and rethink certain things leading to paralysis in completing your task until you come up with the perfect solution that falls within your initial plan.

It is alright to focus on quality in everything you do, but there's a healthy balance between quality and effectiveness.

2) People pleasing is destructive

To always be thinking about what to do and what to say in order to please the people around you will simply take so much energy from you. This used to be a big issue from me and I used to feel so tired after social gatherings because of it. The worst part is that I was not only causing myself harm but I was also giving an authentic opinion to others which would cause relationships to lack depth and meaning.

It will benefit yourself and others to stop this habit so just start being yourself and speaking the truth.

3) Address what the audience is thinking

I like to think about this point as an artist who is on tour. Imagine going to a Queen concert without Bohemian Rhapsody or a Lil Nas X concert without Old Town Road being played. You would probably be leaving your audience a little be let down.

If the audience is thinking or expecting from you, you should do that and then push on and add even more value, entertainment, etc.
