So what's the catch?
THE THEME IS PLASTIC

Plastic is known as a very durable material made of long chained molecules classed as polymer that resists degradation, sunlight and can last from 100 - 200 years.

One pitfall of plastics is that it usually ends up as trash in two places:
👉 Landfills
👉 Natural environment (the ocean)

Other things you might as well know!
➡️ Plastic is a multi-billion dollar industry which is expected to grow in coming years due to increasing population and economic demands.

➡️ Trash/plastic that ends up i the ocean is a health hazard to the environment and us. Thanks to the TOXINS called:

• The toxic chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) and PS oligomer. These end up in the guts of animals or wash up on shorelines, where humans are most likely to come into direct contact with the toxins.

➡️ Biodegradable plastics are being made such as hydro-biodegradable plastics and petroleum based oxo-biodegradable plastics. But these do not efficiently break down because it depends on how it is disposed + weather/temperature conditions; they may last as long as non biodegradable plastics. But in favorable conditions they only last 47-90 days. Source

➡️ Surveys show that people always have a negative impression on plastics compared to glassware and paper bags. Source

➡️ By 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fish. And plastic particles broken down in the ocean which is ingested by wildlife will be hard to remove. Imagine, does'nt that scare you?. Source

There are many benefits that plastics have offered to the world but it can be the very thing that can destroy us.

Public Awareness has increased but that hasn't led to falling consumption. And plastic producers don't plan on ending it soon.

PLASTIC DRAWING CONTEST
If you want to participate, follow rules listed below

1. Upvote and resteem this post.
2. Use Plastic drawing contest: (add your own title) as your title.
3. Use the tag plasticocean as one of your tags.
4. Draw with the theme: Plastic
   🌊How it affects the ocean
   🌊How it affects marine animals
   🌊 How it affects people
   🌊How recycling/reducing plastic use is a way to protect all of us.
5. You can use digital/traditional medium. Please add work in progress pictures.
6. Judging is based on skill and most importantly, concept
7. Post the link and Image of your entry in the comment section below.
8. You have 10 days to create your entry. Winners will be announced on the 11th day.
9. Your entry can be expressed in any style as long as the message is clear. Take this picture for example:
   
   You can also draw realistically etc. Your choice, be creative. Enjoy the process!
10. Lastly, after creating your art, explain a bit about your concept and why you drew it and what it made you feel.

Hello! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea and concept for this contest. It is a fantastic way to attract artists, spread some steemit love, but most importantly spread some love for the planet.

No only with plastic (though that does play a really huge part in it) but it is devasting what has been done to the oceans. Oil spills, fukishima, and of course plastic and other contaminants. So many people want to overlook our oceans until they want to go on vactions, and it throughouly sucks how the wildlife and sea creatures have been overlooked.

This goes right along with a collection of art that I make, so will defo be participating! 💖

we really must use in moderation and stop fukushima leak if we can.
I totally agree many TRAVELERS actually enjoy the beach and mountains and dont give a shit.
everytime I look at plastics now, I have second thoughts in throwing them... Ill just collect and make a giant artwork masterpiece, that way it wont get thrown.

That's a contest for a worthy cause indeed. I had an assignment a while back writing about the effects of Ghost Fishing. It's the term for fishing nets and line that still catch fish, even after being long lost by the fishermen. No bueno. I like those assignments that force you to learn something as you write them. what a fantastic idea and for such a great cause! I used to do beach cleanups and had a brief stint volunteering for the Santa Monica aquarium here in LA. Its really ridiculous how much plastic you'll find on the beach. I think recently there is a movement here to try and ban plastic straws, because we'd find so many on the beach! Styrofoam is also such a huge problem, bc it's difficult to tell it apart from seashells. Definitely interested in creating something for this contest!
