Capturing the blues

I've spent most of the afternoon painting the beautiful blue hydrangeas at the french gîte we are currently staying at. Hydrangeas are a firm favourite of mine, I love the variety of colours that they come in and the colour combinations that you can get in a single plant.
Hydrangea (/haɪˈdreɪndʒiə/; common names hydrangea or hortensia) is a genus of 70–75 species of flowering plants native to southern and eastern Asia (China, Japan, Korea, the Himalayas, and Indonesia) and the Americas. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably China, Japan, and Korea. Most are shrubs 1 to 3 meters tall, but some are small trees, and others lianas reaching up to 30 m (98 ft) by climbing up trees.

For this piece I lay my watercolours out on the grass and sat underneath the hydrangea plants painting.

I then built up layers of white, green, blue and light blue paint in expressive lines to suggest tone and movement.

I have to agree with many here. From the 4th pic from the bottom to the second they just jump off the medium. Fantastic! Beautiful

Oh. That one actually.. has some unusual colors!
That one is amazing! Love it!
You can see the progression from my previous hydrangea painting, yes.
Yep, nailed it :D
That white pen over the purples and blues is amazing
Thanks, it's a more gentle technique for outlining than black pen
Wow, that's a great technique! May I ask - the whites on the pictures 3 and 4 are also watercolor or a liner?
They are white pen - it absorbs slightly into the watercolour but allows me to draw over the watercolour when it is dry.
That's a lovely painting, and I really like how you show the process AND the original version in nature that served as inspiration.
Thank you for that feedback on the format of the post, I will try to continue to do this. :D
stunning. I love the fine line details. Very nice!
Excellent, thank you!
Beautiful work ! Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much @spirits
This picture is beautiful!
Hello @warriorlion! Thank you, I'm glad you like this piece as well :D
This is so beautiful. I hope I learn a lot from following your page :)
All good things hope!! ;D
Beautiful. I want to use white pen in my watercolors now.
Give it a go, if you get water-based one it will soak into the colour gently, an acrylic one will sit more on the surface and is good for highlights- though I haven't used an acrylic one.
What you used made nice enough highlights.
@opheliafu very nice work again love it
Glad you do, thank you!!
great artwork, upvoted
Awesome, thank you :D
Wow, so amazing to see it from the beginning.
I think it's fun to see how this kind of work evolves. :D
I wish I could paint, it always really interested me. I even thought I was getting pretty good at it at one point, but when I stopped doing it regularly it seemed like I went back to being terrible lol. I think that for me the little artistic gift that I have comes out in food more, since I love to eat. #fatkidproblems ;P
Great colours
