Azaleas are one of the most popular garden plants, and spring is the time they look their best, with a spectacular flower display. There are thousands of varieties of Azaleas available, ranging from tall growing "Indica" varieties to smaller dwarf varieties. The Kurume Azalea is a small to medium growing-height Azalea. It has compact growth, and small "hose-in-hose" flowers, meaning one flower inside another, sort of like a double flower.
The Kurume Azaleas are available in several colours, including the well known pinks and white varieties. There plants prefer a well drained, slightly acid soil, and a semi-shaded position out of the hot sun. They are best suited to a cool-temperate to warm-temperate climate, and you can plant these Azaleas in pots or in the garden. They are endemic to several asian countries including China and Japan.

I assure you I have never seen this flower and plant in my country! If I see it, I will definitely bring it home! Wow it's wonderful and I like that color of the flowers as well! You said it's available in several colors! I couldn't imagine the beauty if I see all those color plants in one area!

Rhododendrons and azaleas are arguably the South’s favorite shrubs. Many people think of them as entirely different plants, but they both belong to the genus Rhododendron, which comprises more than 800 species and 10,000 named selections.
Even to the untrained eye, one difference between the two groups is obvious: rhododendrons generally have much larger leaves. From a technical standpoint, rhododendron flowers are bell shaped and have ten or more stamens, while azalea blooms are typically funnel shaped and have five stamens.
By making their choices carefully, gardeners in almost every part of the South can enjoy some of these plants, even if that means growing them in containers. Rhododendrons generally do better in the Upper and Middle South, though a number of selections thrive in the Lower South.
Azaleas, however, are more accommodating; with the necessary attention to soil, light, and proper selection, they can be grown throughout the South.

Their vivid colors, profusion of flowers, and adaptability to a wide range of soils and climates make them one of the most popular flowering shrubs in Georgia. While azaleas are nowhere near as popular as they were some years ago, they’re still hard to beat when it comes to producing a mass of garden colour in winter and spring. Azaleas vary in size from small, rather delicate shrubs that are happiest in pots, to the large, hardy indica varieties that seem able to survive all the climatic challenges that are thrown at them. I think you have already written about Azaleas. But it was different color as I remember. They look lovely as they give vivid energy to soroundings - house, garden, park, etc.
My mother used to grow these in our backyard growing up in up-state NY. A suburb outside of Albany. Sad to say she is no longer with us, but I have great memories of helping her in the garden one of her favorite places to be. Another great share! Thank you!

Beautiful plant @ctrl-alt-nwo! Azaleas can give months of flowering pleasure from winter to summer, but as with most plants, the best results require a little bit of attention. Watering should be done on demand and the plants kept moist, but be careful not to overdo it, especially in autumn and winter as azaleas need less water as the weather cools. Never water over the buds or flowers as this can cause fungal problems that result in a shorter flowering at best, and no flowering at worst.
Although Autumn conditions are not as conducive to "petal blight" as are the warm days of late Spring, it may be necessary to use Zayleton to control these problems if they occur at any time. Generally though, if overhead watering and torrential rain are avoided (Good luck with the latter), and dead flowers are picked off from time to time (put them in the bin not the garden), there is nothing to stop a wonderful display for many spring weeks, providing conditions remain fine.
As far as fertilising of Azaleas (and for that matter most plants) is concerned, monthly applications of Harvest or a Fertiliser for acid loving plants, as well as a measure of Osmocote, Organic Life or Cow manure every three or four months, should be all that's required to keep your plant in good shape. Remember not to use granular chemical fertilisers on azaleas in Autumn and Winter as you may destroy the Spring flowers. "Azalea & Camellia food" can be used after flowering to encourage new growth, but only sparingly on established plants in the ground, and never on plants in pots!

There are two distinct types of Azaleas. Evergreen Azaleas, (sometimes called Japanese azaleas) keep their leaves in winter, and typically grow to 40-80cm (18"-30") in 10 years. Deciduous Azaleas are taller, reaching 120-150cm (4'-5') in 10 years, and lose their leaves in the autumn, often with some wonderful colours first. Both are members of the Rhododendron family.
Deciduous Azaleas originate from Turkey, America and Asiatic areas such as Japan and Taiwan. The yellow luteum from Turkey is as hardy and as popular as ever with its scented flowers, while the American species are more subtle and extend the flowering season into the summer. The Asiatic species are more delicate in habit and in flower, and all the more beautiful too. Best in partial shade, and perfect at the edge of woodland.
The plant collector E H Wilson introduced his famous Wilson’s 50 Evergreen Azaleas in 1920 having selected the best 50 Kurume azaleas from Japan. Since then, numerous hybrids have been bred around the world, some them not hardy enough for British conditions. We have selected good performers for a spectacular show every May.

Kurume azaleas are one of the most commonly grown azaleas in Georgia. They were imported from Kurume, Japan, to the Arnold Arboretum in Boston in the early 1900s and soon made their way into the nursery trade. Most Kurume hybrids are low- to medium-growing shrubs (2 to 3 feet), but a few grow to 5 to 6 feet.
Flowers are small but quite numerous, often masking the foliage. Colors range from white to pink, salmon or red, and some are bicolored. Most are cold hardy throughout Georgia. Popular Kurume hybrids include ‘Hinode Giri’ (rose-red flowers), ‘Coral Bells’ (soft pink flowers), and ‘Snow’ (white flowers).

Evergreen azaleas are a bit of an unsung garden hero, really. There can’t be many more obliging, hard working plants. Generally regarded as playing second fiddle to their more aristocratic rhododendron family members, they seem to have followed their slide down towards oblivion in recent times. Yet they are such a forgiving plant, tolerant of a wide range of conditions from full sun to almost full shade – as long as it is high shade. They also grow well even where there is a lot of root competition. They can be featured in their own right or they can be a backdrop. And if you have enough different types, the flowering extends for much of the year, though the majority peak for us in September to early October. I tracked the blooms and found the latest varieties still with blooms near Christmas and the first ones showing colour in early March this year. That is a pretty impressive record.

Evergreen azaleas are much easier to propagate than rhododendrons and are worth a try after the new growth has hardened in summer. Alternatively you can raise seed, as Mark’s father did here to bulk up the plantings without having to buy them. They won’t grow true from seed, but we like the variation we have as a result and the mass of bloom we get is unsurpassed.

How To Grow Azaleas
An obscure federal law passed in 1803 states that all homeowners where azaleas will grow must plant azaleas. Because Americans by and large obey the law, if you drive down any street in April and May, it's hard to find one house without azaleas. Therefore, Grumpy feels duty-bound to tell you how grow these colorful bushes, so you will not be brought up on charges.
Native Azaleas vs Exotic Azaleas The two main classes of azaleas, both of which belong to the Rhododendron family, are native azaleas (indigenous to many parts of the U.S.) and non-native, exotic azaleas, most of which hail from Japan. How can you tell them apart? Easy. Native azaleas lose their leaves in winter. Exotic azaleas are evergreen.

Now you might think that native azaleas are easier to grow than plants from far away. Not so. Evergreen azaleas are much less fussy and much tougher than the natives. I have both in my garden, so I know. Because the evergreens are much more popular, however, the rest of this lesson concerns only them.
Kinds of Evergreen Azaleas Almost all evergreen azaleas are hybrids and there are thousands of them. But the vast majority of azaleas people grow fall into one of three classes. Kurume hybrids, like 'Coral Bells,' ' Hinodegiri,' and 'Hershey's Red,' are dense, slow growers with small leaves. They bloom early and profusely in spring, flowers hiding the foliage, and grow to about 4 feet tall and wide. Southern Indian hybrids, like 'George Lindley Taber' and 'Formosa,' are less dense and bloom a little later. They have larger leaves and flowers, grow much faster, and at least get twice as big. Reblooming hybrids, like the Encores, bloom in both spring and fall with their fall blooms being more profuse. Their flowers and leaves are similar in size to those of the Southern Indians, while the bushes themselves grow about as big as Kurumes.

Tips for Growing an Azalea Houseplant
You can grow azalea indoors much like any other houseplant, but as with other blooming plants, there are a few tricks you need to know about the care of indoor azalea if you want to keep them blooming year after year.
The first step in growing an azalea houseplant is to choose the right shrub. You are looking for greenhouse azaleas, not hardy azaleas, which are only grown outdoors. Both are Rhododendrons, but different sub genres, one of which is only hardy to USDA plant hardiness zone 10. That’s the one you want.
Greenhouse azaleas aren’t always marked as such, but they will almost always be sold indoors and usually come with that decorative foil wrapping around their pots. Look for a plant with only a few buds open and showing color. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy that first full bloom for a longer period of time.
Flower buds should look healthy and be at different stages of development as a sign they are actively growing. An azalea houseplant with yellowed leaves isn’t healthy. Look under the leaves as well. That’s where those pesky whiteflies and mealybugs dwell. They love azaleas.
Care of Indoor Azalea
In their natural environment, these plants live in the understory of high trees. They thrive in cool, filtered sun. Azaleas as houseplants do best at cooler temperatures, ideally around 60-65 F. (16-18 C.). Cooler temperatures will also help the blooms last longer. Keep them well lit, but out of direct sun.
Moisture should be your greatest concern in the care of indoor azaleas. Never allow your plant to dry out. While watering from the top may provide sufficient care, indoor azaleas enjoy the occasional dunk, pot and all, in a larger container of water. When the bubbles stop, pull it out, and let it drain. Whatever you do, don’t let these plants dry out. Keep them damp, not soggy, and don’t fertilize until flowering is complete.

Azalea, certain species of Rhododendron, of the family Ericaceae, formerly given the generic name Azalea. Neither the nature of the corolla (ring of petals) nor other characteristics are sufficiently constant to serve as a means of separating these plants into two distinct genera, although azaleas are typically deciduous while rhododendrons are evergreen. Azaleas are beautiful additions to any home and, with the right care, you can enjoy plenty of delightful blooms. Depending on the plant you choose, your azalea could produce pink, lavender, red, peach, white, or even bi-coloured flowers. Azaleas prefer bright light and cool temperatures and, when they are happy, they will bloom for three to four weeks. If you want your plant to re-bloom, it might be somewhat challenging by not impossible. The plant will need two months of cold (not freezing) weather during the autumn or winter in order to produce more buds.
By pruning your plant, you wil also ensure that they will branch out further. This makes for a more attractive plant and allows for more growth. You should only prune this plant after it is done flowering. Another good tip to remember is to cut the stem at a 45 degree angle about ¼ inch above the leaf node. The leaf node is the point at which the branch or leaf is attached to the stem or branch. Always use sharp, clean pruning shears so that your pruning does not result in unnecessary damage.
Keep your plant away from sources of heat like fire places, heaters, and so on. If they get too warm, the flower buds will perish before they even have a chance to open. Usually every three years, your azalea will need to be replanted. Make sure that you do so when the plant is done flowering and always use a pot with draining holes.
You can fertilize the plant during its growing season but you should stop when your plant is finished producing flowers. Your plant will no longer require quite as much nutrients when it becomes dormant which is why here is no need to fertilize until it enters its growing season again.

Many people think of them as entirely different plants, but they both belong to the genus Rhododendron, which comprises more than 800 species and 10,000 named selections. Even to the untrained eye, one difference between the two groups is obvious: rhododendrons generally have much larger leaves. From a technical standpoint, rhododendron flowers are bell shaped and have ten or more stamens, while azalea blooms are typically funnel shaped and have five stamens.
