"The world met the modern barcode in Troy, Ohio on June 26th, 1974 at 8:01 a.m. in Marsh's Supermarket."
Now ubiquitous, and subject to persistent rumors of secret satanic conspiracy theories despite the very dubious theology used in support of such claims. In reality, Universal Product Code (UPC) has helped simplify logistics and inventory through the power of computers. The video quoted above and embedded below covers the history of the stripes we take for granted today.
The one-dimensional UPC has evolved into various two-dimensional matrix designs that can hold a lot more data. QR codes are a common example, but far from the only one. These require much more complex technology to process. The 5-decade-old technology and relative simplicity suggests to me that UPC isn't likely to fade into obscurity any time soon despite the advances in technology available now.
This can all be seen as a potential surveillance system which could be used for evil (but not at all supernatural) means. Tools can always be used for good or evil. Many dystopian films, television shows, and games use barcodes and similar technologies as shorthand for dehumanizing authoritarian control. ID cards usually feature some kind of code in our modern world already. It's up to us to choose and act with purpose according to our conscience.

I remember well the advent of the barcode and the satanic conspiracies that at once surrounded them, though I can't quite recall how we used to spread such conspiracies.
It was all word of mouth when I was a kid. Someone would always be sure they knew someone who could prove it.
It's strange to me that the Internet makes rumors spread faster when it's so much easier to look up answers, too.
Boy If I didn't already feel old, the barcode is 50. This conspiracy theory reminds me of another one that was going on back then but I do not remember all of the details, It had to do with crisco and a symbol that was on it being satanic.
Don't we all love a bit of barcode scanning!
It's how the library manages everything.
Lol, I don't know if I expected the barcode to be younger or older.... hmmmm
!LOL
