Begonias for baskets

in #begonia6 years ago

Begonias are a very diverse group of plants, available with a multitude of leaf shapes and colours. They all share the same type of flowers, which have cololurful "sepals" ( not petals ). Some Begonias are suited for outdoors in a moist, shaded spot, while others are better suited for indoors. Bedding Begonias, used for massed flowers displays outdoors, can tolerate some sun. Being native to sub-tropical and tropical regions, they are at their best during the warmer months in places like Sydney, where we have a temperate climate. The leaves and stems can be quite brittle and break easily, so choose a sheltered spot to plant them.

The Begonias pictured are in large hanging baskets hanging either side of utility poles in the City of Sydney , in Martin Place, where they add colour to the bustling business district. The bright red colour of the Begonias contrasts nicely with the dark leaves of the Philodendrons which are on the lower half of the baskets.new7 226.jpgnew7 065.jpg

Annual begonia plants have many uses in the summer garden and beyond. Annual begonia care is relatively simple when one properly learns how to grow begonias. Watering is important in the care of begonias, as is the right location.

Known as wax begonias or bedding begonias, annual begonia plants (Begonia semperflorens) grow quickly and easily fill in spaces in the garden that will benefit from attractive foliage and frilly flowers. They can be a focal point when planted in mass and are excellent specimens for container combinations. Annual begonia plants are also deer resistant, so keep them in mind for trouble spots in the landscape.

Plant wax begonias in a full sun to shaded location. Full sun locations during hot summer days may stress annual begonia plants, making them susceptible to disease. Therefore, in areas where summers are exceptionally hot, plant wax begonias where they will get afternoon shade.

Begonias

Begonias are a commonly used bedding plant that can provide striking color in the landscape throughout the year. The begonia family contains more than 1,300 species and hybrids, many of which are commonly grown as potted foliage plants.

Begonias that do best in the landscape generally fall into three groups: wax begonias, cane or angel-wing begonias, and rhizomatous begonias. Other types like tuberous, Rex, and Rieger begonias prefer cool temperatures and do not usually make reliable landscape plants in Florida, but you can always try them as houseplants.

Wax Begonias
In the landscape, wax begonias (Begonia semperflorens) are most popular, with flowers that keep their rich color, even during the summer. While considered annuals, they can often survive in the landscape for several years. There are numerous single- and double-flowered varieties in shades of red, pink, and white, with either bronze or green foliage. Popular and reliable, wax begonia thrive in sun or shade and perform well in landscape beds or containers. They are tender to the cold, so should be planted in the spring, after the danger of frost has passed.

Cane Begonias
Cane begonias have stiff, upright stems that give them their common name, and produce clusters of dangling flowers in shades of red, orange, pink, or white year-round. Leaves are spotted, banded, or splotched with color, and wing shaped, giving them the once-common name angel wing begonias.

Landscape favorites include ‘Torch’ (red flowers) and ‘Alba’ (ever-blooming white). ‘Sophie Cecile’ is a reluctant bloomer, but its robust, five-foot foliage makes it a landscape standout. For South Florida gardeners these plants provide year-round interest; however, in North Florida they usually die to the ground during the winter.

Begonia is a genus in family Begoniaceae among the flowering plants. The only other member of the family Begoniaceae is Hillebrandia, a genus with a single species in the Hawaiian Islands. Begonia with 1400 species is one of the ten largest angiosperm genera.

Facts About Begonias

The first begonia was introduced into England in 1777.
Begonia's are a very diverse group of plants, many of them are grown primarily for foliage, others for the showy bloom.
Very many species have been introduced, and there are numberless hybrids and variations.
The genus Symbegonia is now included in Begonia.
The begonia's fruit is a dry, winged capsule that splits lengthwise to release the seeds.
The Tuberous begonia is also very popular around the world as a bedding plant and also as a greenhouse plant.
Begonias are propagated from seed or cuttings. Begonias Seeds are very fine, dust-like, and take two to three weeks to germinate.

Hello Friend @ctrl-alt-nwo! I am very pleased that you sometimes visit my blog! I would very much like to find myself in sunny Australia, to feel the aroma of those very beautiful flowers that you are writing about! And in my country my favorite gold season is now :)

Yes, i love the Autumn too. The leaves on the deciduous trees have great colour before they fall.

I would like to see pictures of your autumn :)

wow these are even more wonderful to spot so beautiful it looks thanks for sharing

Begonias are very beautiful flowering plants @ctrl-alt-nwo and good for potting and hanging to show its majesty for people to enjoy.

Gorgeous flowers. They remind me of the hot coals of heat that remain after the fire.

Love these flowers! But they are quite expensive here and difficult to maintain in good condition! Easier to have orchids instead of hanging basket!

Yeah, maybe they will get powdery mildew there in Thailand.

Begonias are some of the easiest plants to grow in containers. This group of warm-loving plants was originally found in the forest understory in tropical and subtropical areas.

Foliage begonias, like rex begonias, are grown for their fancy leaves that have many beautiful colors highlighted by unusual markings and swirls in the foliage. They make a sensational statement when grown on a partially sunlit windowsill.

Flowering begonias, like Begonia boliviensis hybrids, are usually grown as annuals in the summer garden. Many new varieties are non-stop bloomers and some perform well in full sun or partial shade.

Beautiful plant @ctrl-alt-nwo! The type genus for the family Begoniaceae, this genus contains around 900 species of perennials, shrubs, and climbers that are found throughout the tropics and subtropics, with the greatest diversity found in the Americas. Although a few species tolerate light frosts, most are tender and will only survive mild winters, so outside of tropical climates, begonias are best grown as indoor container plants. This is a large genus, and countless hybrids have been introduced, which largely fall into 8 distinct groups: Cane-like, Rex-cultorum, Rhizomatous, Semperflorens, Shrublike, Thick-stemmed, Trailing or Scandent, and Tuberous.

Begonias may be fibrous- or rhizome-rooted or tuberous. They are clump-forming plants with olive green to bright green foliage that may vary in colour, texture, and shape but is often beautifully marked, lobed, or covered in fine hairs. The foliage emerges from the rootstock or is held on cane-like stems. A distinctive feature of begonias is the separate male and female flowers there is usually a single female flower surrounded by 2 or more male flowers, occurring in shades of white, yellow, orange, red, and pink.

Most begonias are tender and will only survive mild winters. In cool climates, some are grown as summer annuals, others as house plants, and the tuberous species are lifted and stored over winter. They grow well in a bright but not sunny position with cool, moist, humus-rich soil. They need to be watered and fed well. Begonias are susceptible to fungal diseases so they need to have good air flow around them. Propagate by division, cuttings, or from the dust-like seeds.

Very beautiful plant. Has many species. Begonia can be found not only on the windowsills, but also in parks and flower beds. Bright and funny colors helped her to gain popularity. It got its name from the name of Michel Begona, who at the end of the XVII century discovered an unknown flower on the Antilles and described it. Today, the natural habitat of the plant is America, Asia and Africa, but you can grow it at home in almost any part of the world

Begonias are perhaps one of the most enduring and traditional houseplants you'll come across. They're easily loved but can equally be hated for being "old fashioned plants Grandmother used to grow".

Regardless, for the most part they're easy going, tolerant and somewhat forgiving of occasional poor care. The choice in variety is truly huge with close to 1000 species and thousands of cultivars. While almost all commercially grown Begonias are cheap to purchase some of the rarer varieties could set you back a little.

Broadly, the type of Begonia you can grow as a houseplant will fall into one of two categories. There are the foliage types, which are grown primarily for their aesthetically pleasing and unusual leaf shapes, colorings and markings. There are so many varieties and different looking foliage Begonias to pick from, so just choose the patterns you like best when purchasing.

With 1,839 species, Begonia is the fifth-largest angiosperm genus. The species are terrestrial (sometimes epiphytic) herbs or undershrubs, and occur in subtropical and tropical moist climates, in South and Central America, Africa, and southern Asia. Terrestrial species in the wild are commonly upright-stemmed, rhizomatous, or tuberous. The plants are monoecious, with unisexual male and female flowers occurring separately on the same plant; the male contains numerous stamens, and the female has a large inferior ovary and two to four branched or twisted stigmas. In most species, the fruit is a winged capsule containing numerous minute seeds, although baccate fruits are also known. The leaves, which are often large and variously marked or variegated, are usually asymmetric (unequal-sided).

@ctrl-alt-nwo, For sure Begonias is reflecting as perfect for Baskets. And in my opinion we rarely see Multicolour Leaves and these are just beautiful to watch. And this will be perfect if we hang it because in that way it can spread the Welcoming essence. And i strongly believe that without nature we are incomplete and nature completes us because nature plays great role in every phase. And in my opinion that's why people develop the Art Of Gardening because in that way they enjoy the natural essence and also they explore the plants, and whenever we witness growth of plants then that gives the humbling effect.

Wishing you an great day and stay blessed. 🙂

bogonias are a favorite of mine! awesome...and thanks as always for the support.

You're welcome my friend !

Begonias brighten up shady areas with their big, beautiful blooms. While most flowering plants require at least a half day of full sun, begonias actually prefer growing in the shade and will bloom continuously from summer to fall.

You can choose upright double begonias (for window boxes, flower pots and garden beds) or cascading varieties (for planters and hanging baskets). With so many options, begonias make it easy to dress up any shady porch, patio or deck.

Hey @ctrl-alt-nwo hope you are fine.
Begonia is very beautiful and attractive plant. But i have a little confusion about the flowers of Begonia, you write that the flower of Begonia plants are have cololurful sepals but not petals, But today i read an artile which describe that the flower has two pairs of sepals and petals. Can you help me with that confusion?
Here is the link https://www.britannica.com/plant/begonia

Begonias come in many varieties, some have more sepals than petals, and some have more petals than sepals. I guess that to be more accurate, it could be said that the colour in Begonias is due to a combination of sepals and petals. Does that clarify it for you ?

Yes thank you for clarification, now i got it.

Begonias have been favored for shade gardens for years and the large-flowered tuberous varieties represent royal blood. These have much bigger blooms and greater plant strength than the seed-grown types, which tend to be small, fragile and often a bit fussy looking. Like true queens, tuberous begonias aren't inclined to relinquish their throne after a single season. These tubers are easy to lift and store for many years of magnificent displays. We know a woman who has been growing the same begonia tubers for almost 10 years. Ever wanted to rub elbowimages.jpeg.

Find a location where the soil drains well. If there are still water puddles 5-6 hours after a hard rain, scout out another site. Or amend the soil with the addition of organic material to raise the level 2"-3" to improve the drainage. Peat moss, compost, ground bark or decomposed manure all work well and are widely available. While begonias prefer a slightly moist soil, they wiill not survive in soggy soil.

Begonia is a very beautiful and amazing flower that conquers gardeners with its magical shape and the diverse colors of the flower. These flowers can be seen in almost every home and garden. They decorate various recreation areas, squares, parks, apartments and balconies.

The flower is also called always flowering. Its name was due to the long flowering time. Begonia is presented in the form of a perennial shrub, which has a thick stalk of a large size, and the leaves have a delicate and smooth surface.

Begonias of this species are very powerful and large plants. The length of such a flower can reach three meters. Her tenacious shoots are always pulled up and cling to various parts of any material, living and nonliving. Flowering is simply amazing in its beauty. But because of the large length of the plant in room conditions, such begonia does not please everyone.

Wax begonia, the more popular variety of begonia, can be found in sizes to fit just about any space (from as small as 6 inches to nearly 3 feet tall). The larger varieties are ideal for landscaping, and when planted en masse create a dramatic effect. Smaller begonia varieties are well-suited for container gardens, and they won't crowd out your other plants.

Flower shapes are just as diverse as begonia plant sizes. Some plants showcase single flowers with just one row of petals, while others have double blooms with numerous rows of petals.

Begonias are warm-climate plants from a huge genus, most of which are valued for their ability to provide long-lasting color in shady or low-light situations. Some throw large, lush flowers in extravagant colors (see our Blackmore & Landon strains), others make their statement with beautifully marked foliage that has the beauty of flowers but lasts longer (such as Rex Begonias), and the best recent introductions offer compelling fragrance as well. Each summer our head gardener curates a colorful display of Begonia flowers at our store and gardens in Connecticut.

All Begonias want good drainage, moderate temperatures, and protection from direct sun.

https://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/begonias.html

Begonias is a amazing plant . Green and brown leaves , red flowers , all are giving beautiful look to the plant . Good plant for home and street decoration .

Begonia
There are some 1500 species of begonias and, by some estimates, more than ten thousand named cultivars and hybrids. To simplify matters, they are divided by horticulturists into informal groups, based mainly on their growth habits.

Some tuberous begonias (especially those in the Tuberhybrida group) are used as bedding and border plants that must be lifted in autumn and kept dry during the winter if they are to see another summer. Unless new plants are to be sown each spring, the tubers should be dug up, dried, dusted with fungicide (flowers of sulfur is fine) and stored until spring when they are replanted, convex side down.

For tuberous begonias grown in containers in the greenhouse or as house plants, water must be withheld during the winter dormant period, but the tubers may be left in their pots. (Tip the pot on its side.) You can create larger flowers and prolong the flowering period of tuberous begonias by pinching out the two smaller female flowers that grow on either side of the male flower.

The sheer diversity on offer means there is likely something for everyone. Some of the popular names you'll find on the plant labels are "Wax Begonia", "Angel Wing Begonia" and "Rex Begonia".

The second option are the flowering types with their impressive blooms. The leaves might not be much to look at this time around, but the blooms more than make up for this. Again pick a plant you like the look of choosing one with only a few flowers open and plenty of buds to prolong the display.

Once you've either a flowering or foliage type of Begonia it's further divided into groups based on how it looks or how it grows. The most popular types are are Cane, Rhizomatous and Tuberous Begonias. The care requirements are quite similar, but each will have a little difference that you need to be aware of and respect for a successful long term relationship.

When & Where to Plant Begonias
Light: Begonias are classic shade-lovers that are only reliable perennials in zones 9 and 10. Most are grown as annuals in all other zones. Some newer varieties can tolerate direct sun, especially if it's morning sun. In cooler areas, begonias can tolerate more sun than in hot climates. Most like bright, dappled light to grow their best.

Soil: Begonias grow best in light, fertile, well-drained soil. Begonias are very susceptible to root and stem rot when exposed to cold, wet soils, so proper drainage is essential.

Spacing: Plant begonias 8 to 12 inches apart if growing wax begonia types in garden beds. Tuberous begonias grow from tubers that should be spaced about 1 foot apart.

Planting: Plant begonias for the garden in spring after danger of frost has passed. Begonias are very sensitive to frost and cold, wet weather, so don't hurry to plant them outdoors. Even temperatures below 50F can damage young begonias depending on the type you're growing.

Flowers that are very beautiful are various colors that add to the beauty of the city corner

Begonias are a broad group of shade-loving flowers. The wax-leafed begonia is probably the most popular annual for shade gardens and container growing. They’re one of the few annual plants that flower well in part shade. Not only are the flowers attractive in shades of white, pink, and red, but some varieties have red or bronze-tinged, glossy leaves making them an attractive plant even when they aren’t in flower. This low growing plant will flower right up to frost and can be brought indoors to continue flowering in a sunny window.

Begonias hybridise easily and even species from separate continents have been bred to produce hybrid cultivars. Hence there is a huge range of cultivars available.

Begonias are an obvious choice to grow in a semi shaded or shaded area. They are well suited to a wide variety of climates, though excessive cold (eg. frost), direct sunlight or excessive dryness can kill or severely damage most types of begonias. Many will grow well as indoor plants; some are more commonly grown in a shade house or fernery; and others are grown as bedding plants.

Begonias are back. In fact, a December report from Google found the popular plant was the third most searched gardening term - and it's easy to see why.

If you are after plants that have stunning flowers and spectacular foliage, then begonias are hard to beat. They come in an astounding array of leaf shapes, sizes, patterns and colours – with the flowers ranging through white, pink, red, yellow, orange and many other hues. While many species favour shady parts of the garden, others thrive in direct sun, and you’ll find varieties to suit pots, tubs, garden beds and hanging baskets. So try a little begonia brilliance at your place.
