Using cryptocurrency as currency?

in #bitcoin8 years ago

Let's be real for a sec. When you try and tell someone that they should spend their cryptocurrency like money, they most often look at you like this:

Why is that? What do people think this is such a novel concept? Nobody seems to be using cryptocurrency as a form of currency, they're looking at it as an investment. Tack on the crazy miner's fees on bitcoin, and it's not really worth doing, is it? I think it's telling that some of the founders are dissatisfied with the way things are going, and they would like to change it. They're angry that we have these exorbitant mining fees, and people holding on for dear life instead of spending it like money.

Personally, I welcome such a change. I do tech support for friends and family, and I'd gladly accept Dogecoin or Litecoin in exchange for services rendered. Were my friends able to send me .25 Litecoin for a few hour's of work, I'd be ready and willing to do so.

This is something that the people currently holding crypto can help do to bring the whole thing into a more mainstream acceptance. If we start seeing people saying they accept litecoin, bitcoin, or whatever, in exchange for goods or services, people will be willing to start trading crypto as money instead of an investment.

So now, we come to the important questions: How would you want to spend your crypto? Where would you like to be able to use it? Do you think this is something that can be done?

What do you think about the idea of more interpersonal trading as a means of kickstarting the crypto economy as a currency? Would you trade with friends or strangers on craigslist?

Idk because how it is set up now once you send that money to an address there's no getting it back and something goes wrong you are screwed. I would trade with friends though.

It's that any different than fiat currency? Once that cash leaves your hands, it's gone, too.

My personal experience, the easiest way to ease into it is to trade crypto for work not necessarily product. It's a lot easier if it's treated as barter as opposed to currency, at least that's what I've found with bringing new people on board and I always use Dogecoin for this. That seems to be Doge's purpose in life. Super friendly and people like having 3000 Doge a lot more than 0.00000100 of a Bitcoin...

Very true. I'm "mining" from a couple faucet sites, and currently holding 102 DOGE in my wallet.

That's an interesting point that you make about bartering, though. The entire concept of money was to get away from bartering. It would create a standardized system that is easier to comprehend than paying for an oil change with carrots and turnips. I'm a sense, we've come full circle...

I finally figured out how to get my sbd to Bitcoin and then to a debit card. It's a great idea to have it to spend imo. :)

Sounds like most (if not all) of those cards are shutting down. Visa and Mastercard have pulled their support.

Really?? This news to me...my shift card is in the mail and I got no indication of any trouble. Hopefully visa honors it...😓

I just saw a couple news articles on it. This wasn't the exact one I found earlier, but it's about the same thing.

@Resteem done.

i've offered items on ebay for payment in crypto but never had anyone take it up

What crypto did you accept? And how widely did you advertise it?

I have a 100% positive seller rating on eBay, so it's something I've considered.

Just ltc and steem.. I just put it in the description not in the title.
I think it was in about 6/8 auctions just as a test

I can't wait to buy my flying lambo and party on the moon with all of you :)

For now, my dealer takes LTC and POTcoin haha

You're lucky. Now we just need to get other merchants on board...
