This Steemit blog is a series of posts based on my day-to-day gambling activities. Basically, I summarize my results and possibly add notes or observations based on what happened on a given day at casinos. I have no idea how well this will or won't be received, but you the reader, should feel free to ask any questions or provide any feedback in the comments.

Next-day delays in posting are common due to having no stable schedules in my line of work.

Category Definitions

I split my results into categories based on the type of game and opportunity to make a profit. These categories are:

  • Core video poker: These are video poker games/machines that either has a player edge built-in, or which flips the edge from the house's favor into the player's favor when a promotion is applied. If the game has a progressive on the royal flush and/or other hands, the edge is based on the jackpot(s) being at its reset value. In the absence of any other extraordinary opportunities to capitalize on, I expect to spend most of my gambling time on core video poker games.

  • Other video poker: All other video poker games that are not part of my normal repertoire (e.g. progressive video poker games with excessively high jackpots).

  • Slot opportunities: Slot machines where I know of or perceive an edge in the player's favor. This edge will always be a temporary one except under the most extraordinary of circumstances. Depending on the opportunity, a slot session could be over in just seconds or take several hours to complete.

  • Other gambles: Everything else. It could be results from trying out a new slot machine, or playing other games such as video keno.

Summary Of The Day's Results

I visited two casinos and have aggregated their results.

Core video poker: Played different games at the two casinos on single-line machines, but at $1.25/hand throughout. Spent a total of about 2 hours, 5 minutes and finished at -$230.

Other video poker: 1 opportunity, went 0 for 1. A very quick play that I lost on, finishing at -$1.25.

Slot opportunities: 3 opportunities, went 1 for 3. Spent about 25 minutes total and finished at +$22.53.

Other gambles: none

Total: -$208.72 for the day

Notes/Observations For The Day

Why would you think any slots could (even temporarily) have an edge that hurts the house. There are establishments where the house edge on slots is very small, but any edge for the player would lead to house bankruptcy in a manner of weeks, so I doubt they would miss it

The house can afford to have a slot that has a temporary player's edge because the percentage of spins during which the odds might be tilted in the player's favor, is small compared to the percentage of spins in which the house has an edge. Here's an example that I got out of an actual slot machine PAR sheet:

A 5-reel, multi-line mechanical game has an overall payback of just over 90% and plays in two modes: normal mode and special mode. Based on the frequency of triggering the special mode and the special mode's average duration, it turns out that over the machine's lifetime, the game should be in normal mode during 65.48% of all paid spins and in special mode during 34.52% of all paid spins. In normal mode, the machine's overall payback is 58.84%, and in special mode, the payback shoots up to 149.19%.

Anyone who is fortunate enough to find this machine at their local casino, and wise enough to only play the game when it is in special mode, would enjoy a high player's edge. Do the math though, and you'll see that the overall return is just over 90% as I stated.

Another example: Currently, there is a popular video reel slot machine currently on casino floors all over the U.S. that is making casino operators a lot of money, in which temporary player's edges are frequently available. The manufacturer announced a technical bulletin and released a software update for this particular game because in its original release, servicing the machine and rebooting it would cause the game to boot into a state where all possible line and bet configurations (each one had its own separate board/reel state) had a temporary player's edge. Many players knew about this flaw and the advantage that could be gained, and nevertheless, the casinos still made lots of money even before the flaw got patched.
