What is all the talk about "Know Your Numbers" these days? And we don't mean your passwords or bank codes or lock combinations!! We mean the following numbers: BMI. waist measurement, waist to hip ratio, weight, cholesterol breakdown (total, LDL, HDL), blood sugar, blood pressure, thyroid panel.
Why are these numbers so important? Because they are testimonials to your health (or the lack of it). They are the gateway pieces of information that can tell a doctor whether or not you are at risk for disease, whether or not you already have fulminant disease, and whether or not you will live a long and healthy life.
A new study confirms that the belly fat we find in kids, teens and adults may be a strong predictor of heart disease. Another finding was that a big waist and small hips can truly spell out future heart disease trouble. Your hip measurement seems to protect or counteract the impact of your belly fat. Interesting is the fact that having a large waist and large hips is not quite as serious a risk factor for heart disease.
People with belly fat are known to develop heart disease and diabetes - two chronic health issues that can offer complicated health pictures when not treated. If you want to live your best life, then choose to lose that belly fat by finding a diet and exercise program that fits your needs and personality. Weight Watchers might be a good fit if you want weekly check ins, a support group and inspirational lectures; if you like protein then the Zone Diet may be a good fit; if you like meals delivered and convenience, there are now several delivery programs across the nation.
Get out of the gut rut and slowly shift your habits for better health as the New Year approaches!!
