One of my all time favorite things about Hive is that I have a platform to just go as deep on my ADHD shit as I want. My brother @customnature and I have always referred to ourselves has serial hobbyists but more recently, I’ve been told I’m just on the spectrum. Either way, these ADHD obsessions are some of my greatest pleasures in life. A friend of mine here in Minnesota referred to it as, “…nurturing your inner child.”. It’s true. When I was a kid I used to get lost in these little side quests for days. It was school, drama with friends, jobs and bills that slowly derailed me. It happens to all of us.

You’ll see in my last blog post that mushroom cultivation is a big thing for me right now. I managed to make a one month long fermented pheasant back mushroom shoyu recently! I even took a few pounds of coffee grounds from @caffetto to grow pink oyster mushrooms. Gardening is big and I’m getting back into electric unicycles before I’m entirely too old to ride them.
The one that is consuming me presently, though, is TV’s! Old vintage TV’s. I had to buy one for a documentary I’m working on with my friend Christine. We’re going to have a lot of the Minnesota Palestine protest footage and ICE footage from Metro Surge broadcast to an old black and white television. I’m pretty knowledgeable of technology type stuff but I wasn’t even sure if that was possible. It is! I figured it out with some tutorials on RF modulators and various adapters but during my research phase I discovered Josh Ellingson. This guy has been around in the TV space and does some really cool Pepper’s ghost illusions and audio trickery. Extremely creative!
The first video I found of his was featuring a Syphonic Minni TV from 1967. I’ve always had a soft spot for small screens and displays, I think because I grew up during the Gameboy era. I was also obsessed with the PSP and PSVita. Well, I felt it coming on and before long I was looking this model up on eBay. I become obsessed with the idea of buying a small, cheap iPad mini just to keep nearby and play all my old favorite black and white and silent films. The Man Who Laughs, Nosferatu, Nightmare Alley and Eraserhead […I’m currently on a David Lynch kick].
It wasn’t cheap, but I don’t regret it at all. There are some tracking/scan line issues I’m dealing with so it’s currently at Ron’s TV repair shop in Blaine. I miss having it on my nightstand but hopefully it’ll return to me completely restored. I’m looking at a lot of other models of small portable TV’s from before 1980, but I have to say, nothing hits like the Symphonic Minni. I love this little thing. Hopefully soon I’ll be able to make a post about some of the films I’m watching on it. I just bought a Sharp VCR and several titles on VHS, including Night Of The Living Dead which would be amazing on here! Thanks for reading!
