रक्षा बंधन का त्यवहार भाई बहन के पवित्र प्रेम का प्रतिक होता है और ये प्रथा सदियों से चल रही है प्राचीन काल में जब कोई राजा युद्ध पर जाते थे तो उनकी बहने अपने भाइयो के सुरक्षा हेतु उनकी कलाईयों पर एक रक्षा सूत्र बांध देती थी और पौराड़ीक हिन्दू ग्रंथो के अनुसार एक बार जब देवता और दैत्यों में युद्ध हो रहा था और जब देवता युद्ध हारने लगे तब वो देवताओ के राजा इंद्र के पास मदद के लिए गए और सभी देवताओ को भयभीत देखकर इंद्र देव की पत्नी इंद्राणी ने मंत्र विद्या के द्वारा देवताओ के हाथ में एक रक्षा सूत्र बंधा जिससे देवताओ का आत्म विस्वास बढ़ा और उन्होंने दैत्यों पर विजय प्राप्त कर लिया तभी से रक्षा बंधन का पवित्र आयोजन सुरु हुआ.
