My First Attempt at Color Blending

in #busy7 years ago

If you opened this post hoping to see some magical computer art, I can assure you, this isn't the place, but I find it a little funny, and definitely a learning experience for me, so I decided to share what transpired.

I've always loved art that captures abstraction in unique ways. I sometimes gaze into M. C. Escher works for lengthy periods of time, trying to interpret what was going through such a mind whilst creating those mysterious beauties. I also love different forms of drawing, painting, photography, graphics, music, poetry, ect. If it's something that can be interpreted as art in any capacity, there is a high likeliness that I will (at the very least) appreciate it for what it is.

I recently made a post describing some of my goals, and one of them was to start working with my tablet to create "art". My goal was to use an app for sketching, and work with the airbrush feature to create unique forms of art.

Airbrushing is one of the many forms of art that I like, and right now there is a high level of appeal to me, because I believe it's something I could become proficient at.

Now to be fair, I am talking "airbrushing on a tablet", not actual airbrushing. Real airbrushing does have a ring of appeal to it, but I can't say with any certainty that it's something I will ever try.

I really felt that I could go into this like a boss, and start producing nice looking stuff, but what happened was kind of what I would consider to be the opposite. So let's have a look, and then I will explain what was going on with my first attempt at color blending.

As you can see, this is not attractive to look at.

I started from the bottom, and worked my way up. What appears to be two colors, before turning into red, is actually three different colors, so this would probably be the most successful part of the exercise, strangely enough..

It was of course when I made it to the red color that things started getting ugly. (My color selections for blending were completely random, as far as my conscience mind can tell)

Some of the things I noticed during my first time trying to blend, are:

  • Lighter colors seem easier to work with, and much easier to blend.
  • Opacity is your friend, but only to an extent.
  • Lines appear more easily with darker colors, and are tough to eliminate.
  • Expect the unexpected.
  • Frustration adversely affects the artistic process. (probably true with most forms of artistic self expression)

The app that I used is a standard android application:

And I really like it. I haven't tried a wide variety of applications for sketching with Android or PC, but this has never been a serious endeavor either. The app has a premium service you can pay for, but for a novice like me, the simple basic functions work just fine.

Of course, I used a stylus too! 😎

Actually, that's a half a stylus which used to double as a laser pointer ¯_(ツ)_/¯

But it works better than my finger, and it's certainly on the list for upgrade.

So that was it, my first attempt at blending color on an Android tablet. If anyone has any tips or tricks they wish to share, I am all ears. The lines that form in the darker colors are kind of a conundrum to me. No mater how low I adjust the opacity to compensate, the lines generally get darker. I will experiment around to decrease these visible lines, and try some different ideas I have brewing.

Thank you for having a look at my first color blending experience 🤪

Hey Rothko!

Oh my, this does have a bit of Mark Rothko going on doesn't it? 🤪

Thank you for stopping by @mjhomb 😎

Hey........don't knock your first attempts at Colour Blending @futuremind What I see is creativity, enthusiasm, enjoyment, willingness to learn, and the most important ingredient of all.......GOALS! Good on you for experimenting and stretching yourself creatively.

When I first started getting involved with photography I was very ordinary but with patience and practice I have made good progress. There is so much more I can do with my camera but I like to do fluid art painting too and need to divide my time up between my hobbies. There are never enough hours in the day for me (lol)

Have an awesome day and I look forward to seeing more of your art work in the future.

Hi @trudeehunter, thank you for stopping by and expressing such kind words. This was actually a pretty fun experience. (maybe because I had been planning for it?) It did start to get a bit frustrating towards the end, but as a musician, I know this is all part of the learning process, and it makes it more rewarding when you notice yourself improving.

There are never enough hours in the day for me (lol)

☝️😮
This is one of my motto's. I'm quite sure there are supposed to be 28 hours in a day, but I'm not sure where the other 4 hours went!

It's always nice to receive feedback, I'll be watching your blog, and looking forward to your future posts as well! 🤗

Whatever we do creatively is always positive @futuremind and benefits us physically, emotionally and spiritually so keep learning and expressing yourself in ways that will enrich your life and the lives of others.

Thank you for your lovely comments and I too look forward to sharing your steemit journey in 2019. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
