Johnny sat up straight. He was sure he heard something at the window. He didn't want to switch on the light, but he definitely heard a scratching sound against the window. What if someone was trying to break in?
He doesn't even have a baseball bat to defend himself. He checked his watch. It was only three o clock in the morning. He lay still for a second, heard nothing further, and then tried to fall asleep again. He just turned around and felt more relaxed when he heard the scratching noise again.
This time he got up and opened the window. There was nothing, except the branch of the maple tree that might be the cause.
It felt weird being back in his hometown. He had no choice but to move back into the house where he grew up. After school he moved to the city and started his own business. Things were great until he became involved with Jessica. She played with him, and she was just after his money. Eventually he had to close down his store and sell everything so that he could get out of debt. He had absolutely no hope for the future.
He felt lost and in despair, and he knew that he had to get back to the place where he felt the safest. His parents had left him the house after they passed away, and it felt weird being there all alone, but at least he felt as if he belonged there.
The house had been closed up for such a long time, and when he arrived yesterday he just cleaned his own room. It looked exactly the way that he remembers. He hasn't been back since he left, except for the funeral but then all he wanted to do was to sell this house to get more money. Even though the house had been on the market for so long, it didn't sell, and lucky for him, he could just move back in.
Johnny sighed. He had to start looking for a job as soon as possible, and then he would spend every free minute he had fixing up this house. It felt like home, and he knew now there was a reason why it didn't sell.
His father had always said, that it was not the way you fell, but the way that you get up that is the most important. His father had been right about a lot of things. If he had only listened.
It was getting light by the time Johnny fell asleep again, and he woke up a few hours later with the sun shining through the window. Someone was knocking on the door and still totally messed up he stumbled downstairs to open the door.
