My Trip To "Dream Island" : SANTORINI (Part 1) / Rüya Adasına Yolculuk: SANTORINI (Part 1)

It has always been a mystery that where Atlantis civilization was located. I think, last summer I have been to there: Atlantis or let's say it the Dream Island. In this post, I'm going to tell you about my trip to Santorini. Since I would like to give all the details and photos of my trip, this blog will be as 2 parts.

Atlantis kıtasının nerede olduğu hep merak konusu olmuştur. Sanırım geçtiğimiz yaz ben oraya gitmiş bulundum. Bu yazıda sizlere Santorini Adası seyahatimi anlatacağım. Seyahatimle ilgili olabildiğince detay vermek, bilgilerimi paylaşmak ve fotoları gösterebilmek için bu blogu 2 parça halinde tutacağım.

Santorini Island is an island which is settled in the middle of the Aegean Sea and belongs to Greece. It has a deep-rooted history and very attracting natural beauties. When you get to there, you feel that this holiday place is out of type amongst the others. There is a mystic air which surrounds you.

Santorini Adası Ege Denizinin ortasında ve Yunanistan'a bağlı bir adadır. Çok köklü bir tarihi ve çok çekici doğal güzelliklerini barındırmakta. Buraya ayak basar basmaz diğer tatil yerlerinden farklı bir dokusu olduğunu hissedebiliyorsunuz. Gizemli bir hava sizi sarmalıyor.

Thousands of years ago (approximately before 3000 years than now), a monstrous volcanic eruption erased the island and its citizens who are known as Minoan civilization. Minoan civilization was one of the most advanced populations on earth. Their mainland was Crete island. But the eruption was so big that the blast reached the coasts of Crete island where it is 200 km far away in 1 hour along with a Tsunami. This Tsunami blew hundred thousands of people off the island and thus ended Minoan civilization.

Binlerce yıl önce (yaklaşık 3000 yıl önce), korkunç büyüklükte bir volkanik patlama adayı ve üzerinde yaşayanları sildi. Bu uygarlığa Girit uygarlığı ya da namı diğer Minos'lular denilmekteymiş. Minoslular o zamanda yer yüzünde yaşayan en gelişmiş toplumlardan bir tanesiymiş. Minosluların ana adası Girit adası. Volkanik patlama o kadar büyükmüş ki, Şok dalgası ve beraberinde getirdiği dalgalar, 200 km uzaklıktaki Girit adasının kıyılarını dövdüğünde yüzbinlerce insanın ölümüne sebebiyet vermiş. Bundan sonra o haşmetli Minos'luları beli artık doğrulmamış ve uygarlık sona ermiş.

My purpose of going to this gorgeous island was a business trip with one of my colleagues. The journey started from Ankara Esenboga airport to Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International airport with a connecting flight in Istanbul Ataturk airport. It took 1 hour from Istanbul to Athens. When we landed in Athens we found an internal bus stop and got on one to get our hotel which is located at Karaiskaki square. This place was very near to the ferry dock which was for taking us to Santorini.

Bu muhteşem adaya gidiş nedeni bir arkadaşımla birlikte Santorini'deki bir konferansta sunum yapmaktı. Seyahatimiz Ankara Esenboğa havalimanından Atina Elefterios Venizelos uluslararası havaalanına, İstanbul'da bir aktarma yaparak gerçekleşti. İstanbul'dan Atina'ya uçakla 1 saatte gidebiliyorsunuz. Vardığımızda bir dahili otobüs durağı bulup oradan direk Karaiskaki meydanınının yakınlarındaki otelimize gitmek üzere otobüse atladık. Bu oteli ertesi gün Santorini'ye bizi götürecek olan feribot iskelesine yakın olduğu için tutmuştuk.

Athens is a beautiful city with the very friendly citizens in it. It is very similar with Ankara and İzmir in many aspects, actually. In fact we can say that Athens is some sort of mixture of Ankara and İzmir. After we threw off our travel clothes, we put on our shorts and t-shirts due to very hot temp. outside. And we had a little day-trip in Athens .

There is a stunning city center and there are lots of restaurants where you can find traditional delicious Greek dishes. Most of those dishes were the derivative of Turkish cuisine or vice versa. Beleive me it's a very deep and controversial issue between Turkish and Greek people.

Because of this I am not getting into this at the moment. And we ate Lamp stick, tzatziki and paid 10 euros for each person. After the dinner, we directly went to Acropolis just before it closed. Luckily we could find a chance to get in there for 30 minutes. But 30 minutes is not enough to see everything for such a place like this.

Atina, dostane sakinleriyle güzel bir şehir ve bir çok yönden aslında Ankara'ya benziyor. Doğrusu, Ankara ve İzmir karışımı bile diyebiliriz. Otele varır varmaz yolculuk kıyafetlerini çıkardık ve üzerimize dışarıdaki aşırı nemli ve sıcak havadan dolayı şortları ve tişörleri çektik. Kısa ve günübirlik güzel bir Atina gezisi yapmak istedik fırsat varken.

Başdöndürücü ve güzel bir şehir merkezi var Atina'nın. Bizimkine çok benzer, tarihle iç içe çarşıları ve restoranları mevcut. Buralarda harika yemekler bulabilirsiniz. Fiyatları da oldukça uygun. Bir restoran'da kişi başı 10 Euro'ya kuzu şiş, cacık ve içecek yedik. Yemekleri bizimkilerle aynı. Yalnızca isimlerini değiştirmişler. Ya da biz onlardan alıp değiştirmişiz bilemiyorum. Bu oldukça tartışmalı bir konu o nedenle şimdi burada buna girmeyeceğim.

Yemekten hemen sonra kapanmasın diye şu meşhur Akropolis'e doğru yol aldık. Bir 30 dk kadar içeri girme ve şansı bulduk ama o kadar büyük bir yer ki inanın 30 dk hiç de yeterli değil burayı gezebilmek için.

I don't really tell about Athens too much in this blog, however it is very important to see Plaka street when you get there. In the evening, this street literally metamorphoses into a magical place. There are numerous bars and taverns where you can find traditional greek music, dance and drinks as well. The most famous drink is ouso!. Yes we tried it in a pub where we enjoyed the lightened scenery of Acropolis standing straight ahead of us. Prices were reasonable.

Bu yazıda Atina'dan çok da bahsetmek istemiyorum, ama şunu da tavsiye etmeden geçemem. Eğer yolunuz Atina'ya düşerse Plaka'ya gitmeyi unutmayın. Gece olunca sokak adeta büyülü bir mekana dönüşüyor. Sayısız bar ve meyhane tüm şehir merkezini saracak şekilde Akropolis boyunca bulunmakta. Buranın en ünlü içkisi Uzo. Bizim rakının aynısı. Uzo'yu bir mekanda deneme şansı bulduk. Mekanlar o kadar güzel ki karşınızda ışıl ışıl ışıldayan Akropolis manzarasıyla inanılmaz bir keyif alabilirsiniz.

Ferry would depart from the dock at 6 am in the morning. As you guess we woke up 5:40 am. It was a challenge for us to catch the ferry on time with our luggage. And when we arrived at the port I realized that I forgot my printed tickets at the Hotel.

Immediatly I delivered my bags to the friend and started to run back towards the hotel. I had only 10 minutes to grab my tickets and get on the ferry back! By exploiting the retard of the ferry, I searched for my tickets in the hotel room but unfortunately I couldn't find them.

A little begging and pardoning for this situation then I boarded the ferry with one condition: I would by a new printed ticket in the ferry from the officer by cash. It was no problem. I paid 50 Euros. We dealt for 20 Euros. He told me that I would be able to refund the rest 30 Euros after the trip in case I write an e-mail to the headquarters regarding this issue. This was the last time that I saw my 50 Euros in cash. Despite my e-mail, company never turned back to me for refunding my money!! Anyways...

Ertesi sabah saat 6 olduğunda feribotumuz kalkacaktı ve tahmin edeceğiniz gibi geç kalmak üzereydik. Saat 5:40'ta kalkıp apar topar limana gittik. Eşyalarımızla o kadarcık yolu bile yürümek bizim için hiç de kolay olmadı. Limana vardığımızda birşeyi farkettim ki biletlerim yanımda değildi.

Hemen elimdeki eşyaları arkadaşıma teslim edip arkama bile bakmadan koşa koşa otele geri döndüm. Geri dönüp feribota giriş yapabilmek için yalnızca 10 dakikam vardı ve ben adeta uçtuğumu hatırlıyorum. Ama nafile! biletlerimi otelde de bulamadım. Feribot da biraz rötar yapmıştı gidip-geri dönerken bundan faydalandım biraz da.

Yalvar yakar derken bir şekilde feribota binebildik ama bir şartları vardı. Bize bileti feribottayken keseceklerdi. Oradaki şefe benzeyen memur bana 20 Euro fiyatı olduğunu söyledi. Ben de de arkadaşımda da 50 ve 100'lükler vardı. Çıkarıp 50'liliği verdim. Adam para üstünü vermedi ama bana merkeze şu maile durumu anlatan yazı yazarsam 30 Euro para üstünü alabileceğimi söyledi. Ama zaten o an dolandırıldığımı anlamıştım :)). Herneyse, o benim o 50 Euro'mu son görüşüm olmuştu :))

There are 2 major ferry companies to Santorini Island from Athens. One is Hellenic Seaways (We chose that one) and the other one is called SeaJets. Both of the companies set trips to Santorini from Athens just once in a day. It takes 5 hours getting to Santorini. Our ferry was not that bad, I can even say it was luxurious. You may have a drink or eat some meal from the canteen inside. Also you may watch TV but all the broadcast was Greek advertorials.

Before Santorini Island, ferry touched a few different islands. As you get closer to Santorini, you'll see a steep rock which its top side covered with whiteness as if it snowed. .This whiteness is all the houses and constructions which are painted in white. This kind of painting and design is called Cycladic Architecture.

Atina'dan Santorini'ye 2 sefer yapan iki ana feribot firması var. Bunlardan birisi Hellenic Seaways (ki biz bunu tercih ettik) diğer de SeaJets diye bir firma. Her iki firmanın Santorini'ye günde bir kere seferi oluyor. Santoriniye gitmek 5 saatimizi aldı. Ama oldukça konforlu diyebileceğim bir seyahat oldu. İçerideki kantin-büfe tarzı yerden, yiyecek-içecek alabilir, istediğiniz bir içeceği içebilirsiniz. Aynı zamanda TV de izleyebilirsiniz. Ama zaten TV'de de kayda değer pek birşey yok.

Santoriniye gelmeden önce feribot, birçok farklı Yunan adasına daha uğruyor. Adaya yaklaşmaya başladığınızda, sanki, yazın ortaasında üzerine kar yağmış gibi duran koca bir dik kaya parçası görüyorsunuz. Bu kar yağmış gibi olan görüntünün, adaya daha da yaklaştıkça,aslında oradaki Kiklad mimarisini yansıtan evler-yapılar olduğunu farkediyorsunuz.

When you get off the ferry on the dock. Youl'll see many taxis and public busses waiting for the passengers to take them to the city center. We had preffered the bus. Because that was the cheapest solution for us. But let me warn you, if you chose the busses you must put up with the crowd with their luggage inside the vehicle. There are too many tourists to see this magical place.

Bus climbs up to the high altitude zone. Cause the port is settled 450 m downside of the island. There are a few towns where you can accomodate. But one is very favoured by the tourists, Fira where it is located interior side of the island. Fira is the capital town of Santorini. This one is the place which you usually see the marvellous photos of it on postal cards or honeymoon websites etc. However hotels of this region is extremely expensive comparing the exterior coastal side.

You won't be able to swim if you prefer to stay in one of those honeymoon luxurious type hotels in Fira. Those hotels are all about beautiful landscapes. There are no beaches at that side. Thus we arranged our hotel at the exterior side of the island. This town is called Kamari. Here you can go swimming. Many hotels in this area are placed cordwisely and just next to the sea.

Feribottan inince göreceğiniz şey büyük bir kalabalık ve beklemekte olan taksiler ve de otobüsler olacaktır. Biz otobüsleri tercih ettik. Taksiler çok pahalı. Ama otobüsler çok kalabalık, elinizde bavullarınızla sıkış tepiş yolculuk yapabiliyorsunuz.

Otobüs çok dik bir yamacı tırmanıyor ve sonra çıktığı yer adanın asıl rakımı oluyor. Adanın iç kısımlarında Fira adındaki semt var burası adanın merkezi. Çoğu balayı sitesinde ve hatta tatille ilgili kartpostallarda gördüğünüz büyüleyici fotoğrafların olduğu yer burası. Ancak buradaki oteller inanılmaz ölçüde pahalı durumda.

Fira, Oia gibi iç kısımda olan yerlerden otel tutarsanız denize girmeniz imkansız. Çünkü daha çok manzara oteli olan yerler buralar. Buralarda plaj yok. Biz otelimizi adanın dış bölgesinde Kamari denilen hoş bir yerde ayarladık. Buradan denize girmek mümkün olabiliyor. Oteller burada denize paralel bir kordon boyunca devam ediyor.
