Atmosphere - the gas shell of the Earth, extending
from the earth's surface to a height of 100 km, where it gradually passes into outer space. The atmosphere is similar to a colloidal system containing a dispersed phase, with all its inherent processes, properties and phenomena.
The properties of matter in the colloidal state are rather peculiar. It is known that the colloidal particles of the substance, in comparison with the larger particles of the same substance, have greater strength, solubility, reactivity, surface area, charge size, and also other color. In addition, they are characterized by excessive energy.
In colloid chemistry it is customary to consider particles with dimensions in the range from 10 * -7 to 10 * -2 cm. In this interval, an overwhelming number of aerosols are found in the atmosphere in the suspended state.
It should be noted that many chemical and physical processes take place in the atmosphere at the interphase boundaries between the aerosol and air. The generally recognized fact is the influence of suspended particles in the air on the processes of cloud formation, the optical properties of the atmosphere and the climate of the Earth on a global scale.
