If you haven't heard, Byteball is doing a massive airdrop to Steem users with 30-70+ reputation. Users are getting $10 - $160 worth of Byteball that can be held or sold immediately Bittrex.

Based on your rep, this is what you can expect to get in the airdrop, half now half in a smart contract a year from now.
- Steem reputation above (30): you get a $10 reward
- Steem reputation above (40): you get a $20 reward
- Steem reputation above (50): you get a $40 reward
- Steem reputation above (60): you get a $80 reward
- Steem reputation above (70): you get a $160 reward
Anyway, I'm not going to spend time pitching Byteball when someone else is going to steal the rewards while I spend time walking through people who to claim theirs.
I've been collecting a list of all the users who go around stealing referral rewards from other people's threads. They do this because the first person who sends the initial bytes gets the referral reward. So they go around and let people introduce others to ByteBall, walk them through getting setup, then take credit for it by stealing the referral credit.
One user comes up a lot, in fact quite a bit. The user is no real surprise, to be honest, but it is @resteem.bot. I sent him some flags to let him know I'm thinking of him. I'm sure he would love to hear back from everyone who has been wrong to let him know you are thinking about him as well.
While he doesn't always get the referral as other users are sometimes faster, he is doing it constantly attempting it and sometimes succeeding. Referrals for Byteball are quite large, giving losers a large incentive to sniper other users posts.
Steemit has a natural attraction to users who want to get free money for little to noeffort. The Byteball airdrop is a big example of that, much to their surprise though, they are not anonymous or hard to find.
I have flagged a few users who have been going around sniping Byteball referrals, and considering releasing the list I have built. Other who are doing it, you are no anonymous and likely will be flagged in the near future.

Nope, but there a runing some bots thats scan Steemit for Byteball adresses an send 49589 bytes. This is more orgenized that you think. Do you really believe we are so smart to write this scrips but use than our real account? We talk about this situation in the Telegram group with the Byteball Team how it can be stoped. There is documented proof you are going around sniping referrals. You are not the only one, but one of the more frequent snipers.
The biggest referral snipping was by bots. One of my referrals got hijacked, and I didn't like it. So after that, I gamed the system for about 200$ by creating new accounts. Their airdrop was very poorly designed and easily gameable.

It need no proof, the DAG is open, everbody can see everything. This was before the information was out, that paments can change the refferal. And how everbody see, people spam thier adresses everywhere to get 1 cent. The Byteball referal sytem was a mess, don't blame the user.
This bot spam network is an other level and not to tolerate.
By the way we also lost someting from the bots but we are not just for money on Steemit and don't care.

Yeah, because there is so much abuse going on, but I think allowing less than 50 rep was a big mistake in the first place. Rep is far too easy to be gamed and created a mad circus.

And I think I found a way to game the ref stealing bots put your address on the byteballs. I got 100K byteball out of that not much but it works lol

The byteball team's idea to airdrop to steemians with rep higher than 30 is amazing in my opinion.
It's sad that people in a way make use of other people's work and steal the referral bonuses though.
But I guess in life there's always someone trying to game the system.
The rep should have been 50+ to be honest, and the referral system should have been rock solid and not so easily exploitable.
I'm not so big on stake-anything, but the fact that the rewards were tiered by rep and not stake just made the whole thing seem scammy to me.

Even this idiot spotted that flaw immediately when I read their site and realised the referral came from sending the bytes as opposed to following the link....quite proud of myself, There may be hope for me yet...and if anyone is wondering. No I didnt!

When you can get $10-$160 just for someone to sign up and you send them $0.08, can imagine how much spam there will be.
Thing is I agreed with my partner to doublecheck with him anything that needs out of steemit, so unless he checks on it, I'm not doing it... and I know it sounds legit, bug kind of looks like free candy and that always makes me suspicious... I was once told, noone gives anything for free. Well it's not entirely true, I've myself done heartily, but still it was like a "virus" of spam in my inbox (counted dozens of anon or users I've never interacted with offering links) and maybe unfairly I've stayed out of it. And I just hit 60 so it's tempting enough. Not doubting it's all legit and all. I just hope my partner can check it, like you don't want to miss free candy anyway XD.
It's actually real, and technically free. @themarkymark helped me with the seed Gbytes. Byteball does get something out of it. Half the reward is placed in a smart contract for a year. This does a lot for their Crypto, basically increasing their userbase and staking. Which makes them look really good to the rest of the world.
Oh sure, I do not doubt it is legit especially after being shared by high rep and fellow steemeans I do know and most of my friends are already enjoying it. Of course the spam issue is secondary and has nothing to do with the initiative but human nature. And as I say I kind of wish to do it but agreed not to use ext app unsupervised. Going super simple...From what I can tell upvotes from higher ranking people weighs heavily in the calculation. So the higher you go the harder it gets, and there are fewer people above you, which increases the difficulty even more.
I'm not an expert by any means but that's the basics.

I know it sucks, but there is no such thing as sniping referrals. All information here is public and the people that send money very quickly are providing a valid service to the people that want to participate in the airdrop. For that the receive a reward as designed by the byteball team. No problem there.
I disagree, just because your local ice cream store has a tip jar with money out in the open doesn't mean you are not a thief if you steal it.
People putting money in that jar voluntarily transfer ownership of the money to the ice cream shop. I am not sure that the people posting under your comment do care to support you, or just want to get the airdrop.
The solution: provide a public rsa key and tell people to send their address in the comments encrypted with that key. If they want to support you and do that, then only you will be able to send them the money.
If they dont, probably they dont care who ends up with the referral reward and value it more that they can proceed as quickly as possible.
So the problem you mention does have a rather simple solution. You may even link to a webpage doing the encryption for the user, so they dont have to understand the rsa-technology and it is just a few clicks for them.
