Fast Ford - Escort RS2000 - How Decades turned Hooligan Trash into Treasure

Classic Legend on the Rise

The Ford Escort, in both Mk1 and Mk2 guise is a cult classic across race and especially rally circles. Dominating stages back in the days before all wheel drive (introduced by Audi with their Quattro), the Escort was one of the finest everyday road cars to modify and take racing. They have remained popular over many decades - especially in the UK. For a long time this was very much a niche however, rather than being thought of as legendary machines.

Decades Carved a Reputation

Recollections in my childhood were of older kids telling me these were 'boy racer' cars, and they were looked upon as a low-class and low-cost hooligans car. Being they could be spotted with tails hanging out and rears smoking, they were susceptible to causing fits of outrage in middle-England. THOSE HOOLIGANS! However, those who knew back then what everyone else was missing out. They were simply brilliant to drive.

Over the decades since, Escorts have seen endless use in grass roots racing. After market, OEM and replacement parts came to cover the models so completely, that you can now build one yourself out of nothing new parts available to buy. Or, you could buy something called an MST - which is an entirely brand new car from the 1970s made from a carefully assembled selection of parts. Shell included. Bonkers and Brilliant. Fact is, the secret is out, how brilliant, fun, and old school they are. Manual, rear wheel drive, very light, tail-happy yet predictable. Easy to work on and modify. The ultimate big boys toy, then.

Their popularity has grown from a cult into an icon, the very best of the best original RS versions can now fetch Porsche money.

Time can change a lot of things, yesterday's trashy hooligan wagon to today's cult icon!

Seen in Thailand

It's unknown how much of this is replica vs original. Replica would be a fair guess, with original lower spec model as a base. A twin cam Toyota engine would do the job nicely ... we never did find the owner or what's under the hood. Perhaps they'll be spotted again one day.

Here's the shots - both edited for dramatic effect and original snaps. The urban parking lot this was shot on is now completely inhabited by a new 5 story apartment/hotel building!
