Ayer mismo os estuve contando cómo han sido mis inicios en esto de la fotografía de producto, y no quiero dejar de contaros cómo me las apaño ahora para preparar mis imágenes. Cuando fotografío el proceso en la elaboración de una de mis creaciones las capturas son casi instantáneas a las que corrijo posteriormente el encuadre y la iluminación, y directamente las publico. Son el tipo de imágenes que veis en los tutoriales que comparto (por ejemplo en las publicaciones del libro de Auxi, en la del banderín o en los tipos de herramientas y materiales que uso). Como mucho lleva textos añadidos, flechas o enmarques para facilitar la comprensión y añadir información extra a la imagen.

Podemos resumir el proceso así:
1º Cuando termino una creación lo primero es inspeccionar el producto y comprobar que todo esté correcto: que no haya manchas o polvo, que no se haya quedado pegado nada que no debiera estar ahí, que los lazos estén planchados, que no haya manchas de pegamento indeseables, que ningún papel se haya doblado o arrugado, o se haya despegado algún elemento decorativo.
2º Lo ideal es fotografiar con luz natural, aunque no directa: si me voy al exterior los días buenos de sol se "queman" las imágenes. El problema del exterior también es el viento: no os imagináis cómo azota el levante por aquí, y las páginas y los lazos de los libros no se están quietos jeje. Si puedo fotografiar junto a una ventana es perfecto, aunque desde que tengo la caja de luz, si el tamaño me lo permite (porque la mía es pequeñita) la uso y me olvido de luces y sombras.
We can summarise the process as follows:
1º When I finish a creation, the first thing I do is inspect the product and check that everything is correct: that there are no stains or dust, that nothing has stuck to it that shouldn't be there, that the ribbons are ironed, that there are no unwanted glue stains, that no paper has been folded or creased, or that no decorative element has come unstuck.
2º The ideal is to photograph in natural light, although not direct light: if I go outside on good sunny days the images will "burn". The problem outdoors is also the wind: you can't imagine how the Levante blows around here, and the pages and ribbons of the books don't stay still hehe. If I can photograph next to a window it's perfect, although since I got the light box, if the size allows me (because mine is tiny) I use it and I forget about lights and shadows.
3º Después elijo el fondo. Yo lo prefiero neutro, a ser posible blanco. Aunque si el tipo de producto lo admite, poder fotografiar sobre un tejido de yute o una madera en bruto da unos resultados muy bellos.
4º Hay que situar el producto adecuadamente en el encuadre. Suelo hacer unas fotografías generales de la portada y de la contraportada, y luego comienzo a fotografiar detalles, tanto del exterior como del interior del libro. Es importante colocar bien el producto y prepararlo: hacer bien la lazada de la portada, por ejemplo, o colocar bien las páginas, que no parezca que se desmoronan una tras otras.
3º Then I choose the background. I prefer a neutral background, preferably white. Although if the type of product allows it, being able to photograph on a jute fabric or raw wood gives very beautiful results.
4º The product must be properly positioned in the frame. I usually take some general photographs of the front and back covers, and then I start photographing details, both on the outside and inside of the book. It is important to position the product well and to prepare it: for example, to do the lacing on the front cover well, or to position the pages well, so that they don't look as if they are falling apart one after the other.
5º Antes era muy "cuadriculada" con este tema, quería hacer fotografías de catálogo, y todas quedaban encuadradas con márgenes idénticos en todas las tomas. Esto lo he desechado y me gusta inclinar el producto o ir girando la cámara (el realidad, el móvil) buscando otros ángulos. Es importante hacer varias fotografías del mismo plano, pues nunca salen igual (sobre todo si tienes problemas de visión ¡y piensas que la imagen ha salido enfocada!)
6º Desde hace un tiempo he incorporado adornos a las fotografías, lo que los fotógrafos llaman atrezo, y la verdad que ha resultado una mejora increíble. Pensaba que restaría atención al protagonista de la imagen, pero si se usa adecuadamente lo que hace es resaltar colores y elementos del objeto fotografiado: unos pequeños botones, lazos, lentejuelas, pincitas,...cualquier utensilio que haya formado parte -o no- de la fabricación del producto, y que coordine o se complemente con este.
5º Before I was very "square" with this subject, I wanted to take catalogue photographs, and they were all framed with identical margins in all the shots. I have discarded this and I like to tilt the product or turn the camera (actually, the mobile) looking for other angles. It is important to take several pictures of the same shot, as they never come out the same (especially if you have vision problems and you think the image is in focus)!
6º For some time now I have been adding decorations to my photographs, what photographers call props, and the truth is that it has been an incredible improvement. I thought that it would detract attention from the protagonist of the image, but if used properly what it does is highlight colours and elements of the photographed object: small buttons, ribbons, sequins, hairpins,... any utensil that has been part -or not- of the manufacture of the product, and that coordinates or complements it.
7º Al final hay que editar la fotografía, siempre es necesario algún retoque de encuadre, de recorte, de subir o bajar la luz o ajustar el color.
8º Y si vas a publicar en redes sociales, a veces creas composiciones sencillas (yo no dispongo de buenos programas de edición de imágenes) con fondos, textos o incluso pegatinas en movimiento, dependiendo del tipo de entrada que quieras hacer. También puedes usar filtros, a mí me gusta hacerlo si es de forma "descarada", que se vea claramente un efecto diferente en la imagen, con una finalidad estética. Pero si es una foto para vender ese producto y mostrar su calidad, hay que evitarlo.
7º At the end you have to edit the photograph, it is always necessary to retouch the framing, crop, raise or lower the light or adjust the colour.
8º And if you are going to publish in social networks, sometimes you create simple compositions (I don't have good image editing programs) with backgrounds, texts or even moving stickers, depending on the type of post you want to make. You can also use filters, I like to do it if it is in a "blatant" way, so that you can clearly see a different effect in the image, with an aesthetic purpose. But if it is a photo to sell that product and show its quality, you have to avoid it.
