"I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, for without me you can do nothing."
It's tempting to claim that our good works come from the goodness of our own heart. No, Jesus says. Our tendency for goodness is a gift (or grace) from the Father, the source of all goodness.
Then it flows through Jesus, the Word made Flesh. His Word (the Gospel) is the fullest revelation of what is truly good. His Flesh (the Eucharist) is the fullest channel of God's divine life into us.
And when we fully commune with the Word and the Flesh of Christ, we bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit:
Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-control (Gal 5:22-23)
