Palm trees growing outside in Canada.

Yes that's right, You probably think I'm crazy! But it's actually true.

Pretty much the only place you will find palm tree's growing in Canada is on the west coast. The west coast has very mild winters allowing a few different types of cold hardy palms tree's to survive.

One of the popular species is the Trachycarpus fortunei. the Chinese windmill palm. Native to parts of China, Japan, Myanmar and India.

USDA Plant Hardiness Zone for T.fortunei:
7a, 7b, 8b, 8a, 9a, 9b, 10a, 10b, 11b, 11a

The lower mainland (Vancouver BC) area is a hardiness zone 8 making it an ideal place to grow the windmill palm with no winter protection.

It is possible to grow some other palm species with little winter protection.

There are some smaller islands of the west coast that are zone 9 so it's very possible to grow the more less cold hardy palms and other exotic plants as seen in the picture below in Salt Spring Island, BC.

Would a cold hardy palm would grow in south-east Michigan? We are zone 6.

You could try a needle (Rhapidophyllum hystrix) palm. It's the hardiest palm but it doesn't grow a trunk. Still looks nice. Gets around six feet tall. They are a zone 6 palm.

It's kinda odd to see this palm trees and read Canada in the same post. But it's for sure amazing to see, and I have to say that palm trees are kinda my favorite trees.

I agree. Palms are my favorite too. 🙂

I was in B.C for a big chunk of July last year...It's really hard to remember you are in Canada when you have perfect summer weather, white sandy beaches and palm trees...In Vancouver LOLOL

Remind me again why I live in Edmonton??

Oh yeah, I don't have 3 million dollars for a home in the lower mainland lol

Yes exactly!! 🙂 Crazy expensive but a very beautiful place to live.

Hey Jon, you can show Task the proof there are palm trees in Canada too now, lol.

Nice post. I would not have expected to see palm trees in Canada either. I just think of all of Canada as a winter wonderland, lol

Thank you! Yes most of Canada is a winter wonderland. 🙂

Yeah, but your palm trees aren't as good as ours in Iraq lol!

Nice post, btw. When I checked from Listnerds I was expecting to see a post with just pictures of palm trees but this was actually informal and to the point!

Thanks! You're right. You have those beautiful (Phoenix dactylifera) date palms. 🙂

Who knew? Palm trees in Canada. I would have gotten that wrong on Jeopardy. Thanks for the education.

Thanks! You're very welcome.

I have actually been to Vancouver BC and was delighted to find certain parts to be like a mini Hollywood lol

I can see that. haven't been to Hollywood yet. Maybe someday.
