Colorchallenge Monday RED

Are hummingbirds attracted to red? It would seem so, since the majority of feeders are red.
But in researching the question, the answer is that they are attracted to bright colors, mostly red orange and yellow. The anatomy of their eye, has a large amount of cone cells in the retina. Those cones filter out other colors, so they see red and other brighter colors more quickly. But they will visit flowers of all colors searching for the richest nectar. In the end, the nectar makes the biggest difference!

In the last picture you can see his tongue ready to lick up the nectar!

BTW, they are not more attracted red enctar. Some studies show less likely to return to a feeder with red nectar (possibly affects the taste, for them) and some studies show NO difference in feeder with and without ready dye.

All agree, there's no reason to ADD dye to nectar in a Hummingbird Feeder.

Totally agree! Just sugar and water.

As always love your photos and work

Thank you. Very nice of you to say.
