An observation on Hive from a newcomer perspective for 3 weeks

in #community4 years ago

20 days ago, I have written my first article on PeakD to mark my first day of joining this space.

Since the day my first article was posted, I have been watching various Hive communities as a newcomer attentively from multiple angles, such as culture and engagement.

Here are the two little things I find out:

A Vibrant & Supportive Community

Within the first hour of my first article, I received a lot of positive comments from the Hive community from all walks of life. The welcoming warms my heart and I realized that this community is unlike any other community I have seen in other platforms.

For example, my profile and article were included in the July 16, 2020 daily introduction post of @heyhaveyamet. The support among the community is impressive and it even extends to Twitter, where Hivers would help one another retweet to increase their content exposure.

This is a really promising phenomenon that the cryptocurrency community should take note of. Because Hivers are united under a strong cause, which encompasses decentralization, freedom, quality, etc. With such strong unity binding everyone together, the potential of this community is just immense (I don't use this word very often, so when I use it, I mean it).

Existence of bot downvoting culture

This was something I learnt 5 days ago, when @jaynie mentioned about the action of @blocktrades downvoting other Hivers' posts automatically without actually curating himself. I am just a newcomer, so I am going to apologize here in advance if I am missing some pictures about this incident.

I learnt that this is something @blocktrades did to counter the vote power of bad actors (not gonna mention their name here). The good thing here is obviously the bad actors' influence is neutralized, but issue here is the good and quality content are unjustly affected by the bot action.

I am not going to be a moral bastard and focus on the flaws of the system. The point is how we are going to do it so that, good posts like the one from @jaynie will not be downvoted from this counter.

I might be naive here, but I believe there must be a corrective action that can be taken to somehow "compensate" the good posts that are affected. Should we, the community chip in to help good contents that are affected by upvoting them? Or should we combine our forces to combat the influence of bad actors together?

Somehow, this is the dilemma and the beautiful thing about decentralization.

"The question of how we are going to ensure everyone is heard equally (or perhaps fairly)" is still an unknown, in my humble opinion.

By the way, TORUM is definitely far from perfect and will eventually face the same problem that Hivers are facing now when we move our ecosystem to decentralization (if we manage to succeed) in the future.

Some last words before the end

In my previous post, I made a promise to Hivers that I am going to write one article every week. I obviously failed because it has been 3 weeks since I last wrote on PeakD. Rest assured, I am gonna keep on writing on PeakD, not because of my background in TORUM, but because I genuinely believes in the potential of this community.

However, due to my workload in my own project, I can't be a superman or naruto and stick to everything. But, once I have set my content schedule for TORUM, I might be able to keep my promise. I sincerely want to be the bridge between Landers (That's what we call ourselves on TORUM) and Hivers because I believe this platform is something Hive can really capitalize on.

See you guys on next Wednesday (I hope 🤣)
