And after only a few months, the country's first Karnafuli (Bangabandhu) tunnel through the much awaited Karnafuli river is being launched. Excavation of the second tube of the tunnel has already been completed. Sophisticated equipment has been attached with additional manpower to complete the construction work of the project on time. If the tunnel is opened, about 63 lakh vehicles will move in a year. The road network is being built around the tunnel to handle the traffic pressure. 20 percent of the work of 11 km connecting road has already been completed. The project will be completed before December 2022, said Sumon Singh, executive engineer, Dohazari Roads and Highways Department. It is learned that major changes are also taking place in the communication system of South Chittagong which has changed around the tunnel and China Economic Zone under Karnafuli. Work on this project of Karnafuli Tunnel Link Road is in full swing to establish safe and cost effective road communication system. The RHD has evicted more than a hundred illegally occupied establishments from Shikalbaha Y junction of the upazila to Taylardwip Sarkarhat. At present the work of making the road is in full swing. At the same time the work of 11 km connecting road of six lanes is going on at a cost of Taka 480 crore. There is a total of 5.35 km approach road at both ends of the tunnel. The flyover is 600 meters. Road work is now underway after the completion of the flyover. The engineers in charge of the tunnel have said that it will be made suitable for traffic by June 2022.

According to RHD sources, 6.1 km six lanes from Shikalbaha Y junction of Karnafuli on the Patia-Anwara-Banshkhali (PAB) road at the cost of Tk 480 crore to the junction of Kalabibir Dighi in Anwar and 2 km from Kalabibir Dighi to Anwara Upazila Sadar. Road construction is underway. The main road will cost Tk 28 crore, land acquisition Tk 90 crore and the remaining Tk 113 crore for miscellaneous compensation. The contractor NDA is doing this. Soil filling work has been completed in 8 km of 11 km road. Construction of 18 culverts is also underway. The construction of the six-lane road will be completed before December 2022, the RHD said.

Harunur Rashid, project director (PD) of Bangabandhu Tunnel, told Alokit Chittagong that work on the first and second tubes of the tunnel has been completed. It will take four months to get the boring machine out of the tunnel. Now the road work is going on. Hopefully, we will be able to complete all the work on the project ahead of schedule.
