Steem Basic Income Giveaway (Surprising yourself...)

in #contest6 years ago

Some really interesting (and also disturbing) responses to last week's Recurring dreams question! It was interesting that some people have very similar recurring dreams, and others that are completely bizarre and/or quite fightening! There was even one that echoed itself in real life!

Also, some really generous and unexpected support from @blockbrothers, @knircky, @appreciator and @steemitbloggers on the last post means that there was a few extra SBI shares to hand out! A good thing for everyone involved (I hope!).

This week, I was doing a bit of introspection (well, a touch more than usual...) and thinking about where my life is at the moment and all of that stuff.... Anyway, it led me to be thinking about how I seemed to have grown up into an adult without myself fully realising it... Finding myself in situations and life circumstances that I would not have dreamed of even a single decade ago!

My Question

  1. How have you managed to surprise yourself and why is it surprising? It could be in a small everyday thing, or something that you've become, or something that you have achieved that you wouldn't have thought was possible! Nothing is too small or irrelevant!

My sample answer

Quite frankly, the most surprising thing to me is the fact that I'm a father and that I'm actually enjoying the experience! Before becoming a parent, I was a bit reticent around children (well, I'm a touch reticent around people, full stop!). I would be completely uncomfortable holding a baby or a small child, and I would shy away from playing with little kids of friends and family. I remember a moment when my wife teased me for holding one of her nephews (who was a tiny baby at the time) like it was a bomb or something... completely uncomfortable!

When my first child was born, I felt like I was a duck to water! There was no awkwardness, and I could just hold her just like I had seen other people hold other babies! The same magic was also repeated for the second child! Now, I'm happy to be chatting and screwing around with them and I find it (mostly...) enjoyable and great fun! That said, I'm still a bit more awkward around other people's kids (like the friends of my daughter, but that could also be a language problem...)... but it is markedly better than before!

So, I'm incredibly surprised to be a father... and to be enjoying it! Weird!

Rules

  1. Upvote if you want, it increases the payout and then I can hopefully sponsor more people.
  2. Resteem is NOT neccessary, but the more people see this, the more the people will be likely to be sponsored.
  3. In the comments, answer as best as you can the questions that are posed in the "My Questions"!
  4. I have added a small Steem-Bounty to the post, so that everyone who replies with a valid entry will get something back. If I give your post a small upvote, it is valid (also, subscribe to @dustsweeper for maximum benefit!).
  5. I will be sponsoring as many people as this post pays out in liquid SBD/STEEM. Also I will kick in at least the required amount to round up to the full number. Winner is by random generator after a shortlisting of quality comments!

Steem Basic Income

One of the first communities that I came in contact with at the beginning of my time at Steemit was @steembasicincome. As a author starting out on your fresh new Steemit account, Steemit can be a daunting and lonely place to be. OFten, it can feel like you are posting into an abyss with no one listening and with no ability to grow out of the situation. A share of Steem Basic Income gives you a guaranteed vote on one post a day, thus giving you a small but over time cumulative support to your account to help grow you out of your initial wilderness!

With this post, I want to help sponsor people who might not even have the spare 1 STEEM that is required for registration. So, when this post pays out, I will sponsor people depending on the payout of this post. Basically, I will round up the SBD payout from this post and then that will be the number of people I will sponsor. (So, if the payout is 2.3 SBD, I will sponsor 3 people). OF course, this is not simply an altruistic move, as the sponsor of a Steem Basic Income share also gets a share, so it is a great way to help others whilst helping yourself!

Last week's winners

The last post paid out 0.022 SBD and 5.309 STEEM in liquid earnings. So, that would make 6 shares.

The winners by random draw are:

@xcountytravelers

@rufusfirefly

@pocketrocket

@ropaga

@kipswolfe

@greendeliverence

I surprised myself when I started travelling alone going to places completely by myself, the feeling of freedom and independence can be overbearing, but the choice was mine I could pick a friend or 2 to come with me but decided I was going on this journey alone, many of the people I know wont even go to a public bathroom in their own...

Ha ha, I'm one of those people... Not a bathroom... But I've only just started to go and see a movie by myself! On the other hand, I'm more than happy to play a computer game by myself!

Travelling alone I don't mind so much, but not being a tourist by myself!

If there is something that I am surprised about, it is the fact of being a teacher. why? because in my student life I never presented an oral activity, I did not present it, I preferred to get a zero. Not even during the university career. LOL and now I have 8 years teaching and I have worked with adults and teenagers. I do not know how I managed to speak in front of an audience, but I do.

Being a teacher is a really important skill and profession! Glad that you are able to pass on your knowledge to others and that you have surprised yourself in adapting to do it!

Really touching to hear your story of becoming a father. I knew I always wanted to be a dad, but I am like you when it comes to OTHER people’s children.

As for me... I guess I surprised myself by getting back into running a year ago and doing a couple 5k’s. I HATED running when I was in the Army, so I never thought I would do it again. But it turns out that when there is no pressure on you to run at a certain pace or distance, a nice slow jog can be pretty enjoyable!

Yeah, it's weird about other people's kids! Also there is the awkwardness of how close you can get without it becoming weird... Too weird everything! Better to just stand 10 metres away!

Don't you miss the drill seargent screaming at you and the simulated of real life fire? I would have thought they would be incredibly motivating!

The most surprising thing to me is the effect that stress can cause me.

I am not a very nervous person. However, during last year spring I was in a tense situation because I had to finish my end of degree work and I did not have enough buffer time in case the lab experiments didn't work.My hips started to hurt but I decided to keep working and take some painkillers.

It went from bad to worse and I went to the hospital. The doctors didn't find anything unusual so they gave me stronger painkillers.

In another visit to the hospital two days after the first one, the doctors finally get round me that the stress was causing my illness and after that I started to recover myself.

I have learnt by the hard way the importance of taking care of my mind.

Wow, that is a pretty extreme reaction to stress! Glad to hear that you've learnt to also take good care of your mental state as well as the physical.

Every day I wake up I surprize myself that I'm still alive. One day.....

Well... That's a little bit morbid! But it is a nice (hopefully nice) surprise!

Surprise surprise... I guess what surprised me the most was my ability to deal with stupid people. I could not do that before, now I am an expert. I have no idea is it because I got super evolved and can now see beyond stupidity to find the light in them or I got stupider myself :D

Ha ha, reminds me of a thing that one of my science colleagues kept telling me.

Don't waste your time arguing with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience!

I've also learnt to pick my battles... It's a surprising aspect of growing up and retaining your sanity!

I surprised myself with a passion project ive been working on for 3 years, i've been coding it from scratch and its been many days, nights frustrations and money to get it to where it is now. I finally sent it to a few users to beta test and the feedback was suprisingly positive for something I felt wasn't good enough but I want to release soon. made me feel a lot more confident, WIll be fixing minor bugs soon and aim for a release in December

Wow, that is an impressive commitment! And it is always a nice surprise to know that others enjoy it! Without giving anything away, it's it an app? A game?

It’s an application that allows small businesses to market themselves online without having to know all the fancy digital marketing strategies

Best of luck with it! Sounds very useful!

Something that surprised me about myself was finding out how much I enjoy writing fiction. I've always loved reading but had never tried writing until I joined steemit and tried a couple of writing contests.

Posted using Partiko Android

Ha! That's quite similar to me as well, as far as my experience with Steem! Not fiction, but just writing in general! I never really thought I would like just writing, but I've found it rewarding and focussing! Great that you are enjoying your fiction writing!

I am always surprised of where I am today. I was the first born to a mother and father that where not ready for me. I was suppose to be broken baby cause my mom used drugs. Both my parents went to jail a few times for drugs. Yet they always told me to be better than them. I know that has to be hard and I am glad they did it. I never did drugs I never stole like them. I worked hard and I waited to have my kids till I owned a home and had a good job. I think back at the crazy days I had a kid and wonder just how I made it this far. Yet at the same time I am always trying to do better.

Wow! That's a great story! Although, I guess it would seem more surprising to the outsider, it appears you have managed to believe in yourself with some conviction! But also, great to hear from your parents that wanted the best for you.

I am surprised that I have ultimately become a digital artist. For a large portion of my life I was strictly a pencil and paper kind of artist and that applying a series of marks and shading to a physical surface is the only way to make art in my mind. Now I create pretty much all of my art on a computer. It's rare nowadays for me to crack open a sketch pad an work on paper. I was so Pro-Pencil with a massive pencil arsenal. Now I have to go look for a pencil if I want to use one. LOL

While it is easier and more convenient to work digitally, it also means a large volume of work doesn't actually exist in the real world unless I print it.

That is an interesting change! Did you find it difficult to step over, or was it something that gradually happened?

Ever since I was young I've done some crazy stuff. Climbing trees? Ha! Try climbing buildings, so much more fun. Swimming pool? I see a nice river over there. Hopscotch? How about hop-train?

I never expected to make it past 21 years old. Until I was 22, then I was surprised every day I woke up. I don't live as dangerously now as I used to, but I still do enough self-destructive things that I'm not the only one surprised I'm still alive at my "ripe old age."

LOL! Ripe old age! ... did you seriously hop from train to train?

Car to car mostly, but yeah. Always imagined myself as an old west outlaw robbing trains.

Are you my doppelgänger in spirit?hahaha
I too never cared for kids and at one point managed to convince the hubs we are better off with just the cats
And I have 4 (how did this happen? Gahhhh)
And I love them to bits even if I am still a little awkward around other people’s kids hahahah

But the thing that surprised me most is when I became Mum’s primary caregiver
I was amazed at the things I was capable of doing
Including sleeping for maximum 2 hours a day if I was lucky
Because she couldn’t sleep and she had this insatiable thirst and she was not mobile
And every time I lay down, she’d ask for water
And she’d rattle the bed rails if you didn’t give it to her
And she had dementia so there was no talking to her
Or more like there was a lot of talk to her but she wouldn’t remember
And in the day I had to take care of the kids and do mother stuff
And I did this for a good 3 months towards the end, day in day out
It was crazy
Now you ask me to go with minimal sleep 2 days in a row, and I can tell you it is not possible ... I have tried haha

Awwww, I am sure it is easy to be “father” to those cuties
So happy that you have embraced it and you are enjoying it 😊

Wow, that's impressive that you managed to be your mother's caregiver in addition to being a parent to 4 (I think the stork is rumoured to have something to do with them appearing in the house...). It's surprising when under difficult circumstances that we would not otherwise choose to be in, that you step up and just get it done!

What the human spirit is capable of eh....
💗

Life always gives me surprises and I love this thing!! I have just entered my 20s and yes it is altogether a new experience but what surprising for me is that how I have evolved from being a silly teenage and loving everyone and wanted to make good friends but now I feel like sitting home, more mature and so changed from usual myself. and yes being in relationship is the most surprising of all because I hated couple earler but now magically everything just fall in place.
I loved your amazing contest and happy to participate. keep flourishing , looking forward for more to come:)

Ha ha, all of that will keep changing I think! But it's great that you feel yourself maturing and changing! I look back and remember things that used to be important that I later discovered were not so much!

I'm surprised how much people can change when their environment changes, in the midst of difficulties is when you can really recognize people. Since I close my business because of the crisis, my family and I have gone through various economic difficulties, I have found support among the least expected people while those who were supposed to wait for something have closed the door in my face.

All this situation has made me change myself, diversify my activities, be a humble person and give more value to people for what they are.

Yes, it is in difficult circumstances when the true faces of people become apparent... Probably the cause of so many bad situations happening at deaths or marriages. Or child rearing...

Although it might baffle quite a lot of you guys, the most surprising thing I had done so far is owning a dog and taking full responsibility on it from physically taking care of the messes that they make and into pretty much everything.

Although I have previously owned dogs as a child, ownership of Ragnar(that is my dog) was pretty special since I am taking good care of him without anybody else's help. That really surprised me because roughly 5 years ago, I never envisioned that I have a responsible nature in me. Furthermore, I never even thought that I would be able to develop a nurturing nature. But I did which is a wonder in itself!

I've never had a pet! I would think that it is much more difficult in some ways than a child, as they can't speak!

Its not just difficult. It's unimaginably HARD. But, the upside is that, its true, they will fill you up with so much love and compassion and empty your wallet in the process!lolz
