NO YOU GUYS!! I cannot believe it, sooo many people thought the second, gold couch was the real antique. I thought it was so clear that the first image with the red velvet was the real deal.
A lot of entrants mentioned the joints, and the fact that they are visible. This is a sign of bad workmanship, guys. You would NEVER see this on an antique. Another point was the brass tacks used, and the lack thereof on the first pic. This is just a specific style design point, mainly on French pieces. The first pic didn't have the tacks, but that doesn't mean that it's not old.
๐ธ SPOT THE FAKE #06 - ANTIQUE FRENCH GOLD MIRROR ๐ธ ๐ธ
So, for this week's comparison, I am asking you to have a look at these two gold painted wooden mirrors. The fake is a very good, and I will be surprised to see many people get this right. The typical characteristics of a carved French mirror are very fine and delicate carving, painstakingly careful paint techniques and (most times) a beautifully bevelled mirror.
Using these guidelines, please tell me which image you think is the fake!

I believe image 1 is the fake.
Simply because it has a bit too much of carving while image 2 is a lot more minimal.

For this one I really have no idea, but am going on pure gut just like the last one I guess.
I reckon no #1 is fake, merely because I think the carving is a bit too over the top for the French, I reckon they're much more understated. Plus I think the bevelling on the mirror doesn't look right, a bit too modern.
Nice comp, I don't really care about the prize money, I just like the idea of trying to spot fakes, there's an antique dealer hiding in all of us somewhere, or at least I'd like to think that :-)

To me the mirror in 2 looks older, and possibly thicker than in 1. If 1 is the real deal, it's going for a pretty good price ;)

Any antique dealer could fool me. I know nothing about antiques, but I'll choose #2 as being the fake this time.

OMG! Still cannot get over the fact that I won the last one yayy. Thank you :D This time, I think the first one is fake. While it looks gorgeous, the second one has that antique feel so the second is original and the first is fake.
# 2 is plain crude and ugly - completely lacking typical French elegance, if I may for a moment put on such a haughty hat. Have you ever seen a worse fleur de lis motif attempt anywhere? - the upside down effort at the bottom even more offending. Not to mention the lack of finesse and balance in the rest of the artwork. If this mirror is really old and really French, it is probably the reason why the guillotine was invented before the revolution. (Only joking!)
The apparent damage to the crowning embellishment at the top of # 1 as well as some other telltale markings may, if they are not fake, indicate that this is indeed a piece from yesteryear.
My guess is that the fake #2 was probably made by some impoverished 3rd world victim of some evil empire who has had only a brush with the original culture - may some steemian relief reach them soon!

I believe the second one is the fake and the first one is the antique.
To be honest, I think the the second one is the antique as it is simple and at the bottom of the mirror, golden color on the wood is somewhat decayed a bit.
But appearances can be deceiving.
So, I chose the second one as fake. Think it as risk taking. :p

Image 1 appear to be fake. The round carving is not smooth and delicate as described.
