Why Did So Many People Do the Wrong Thing?

World-O-Meter shows a pronounced uptick in COVID19 cases.

I was surprised at how many people in the US began engaging in extremely risky behavior as the number of cases began subsiding in May.

The important thing to note is that the bad behavior came from the political world and not the business world. The businesses that I come in contact enacted measures to protect their employees and their customers. There are a few businesses which are bad actors. These are a minority as businesses tend to focus on making the world better.

The bad behavior was motivated by politics.

Politics, not the market, is the cause in the surge of cases.

The businesses I know have been paying close attention to the science with most businesses adopting science based plans for their reopening.

I think the science of COVID19 shows several things. The science shows a strong correlation between immune health and the severity of the disease. This is actually a direct relation because immune systems fight the disease.

IMHO, people should focus a great deal of their attention on improving their immune systems. The media seems to focus attention on socially isolating people.

Personally, I have focused on studying the role that vitamin D plays in the immune system. Our skin produces vitamin D when exposed to UV-B rays from the sun. The best time to get sun is at noon.

Vitamin D is not a simple molecule. The name refers to a complex of related molecules that regulates the immune system.

Harvard Health tells us that the UV-B rays from the sun adds extra oxygen and hydrogen molecules to 7-dehydrocholesterol in your skin to create 25-hydroxyvitamin D. The kidneys adds extra oxygen to create 25 dihydroxyvitamin D. These different forms of Vitamin D work with Vitamin K1 and K2 to regulate calcium absorption by the bones and the creation of platelets in the blood.

Vitamin D seems to work with Vitamin C, zinc and other minerals to regulate our immune system.

The immune system is extremely complex. It is based on a balance of chemicals. Taking megadoses of a given chemical is not necessarily going to make things better. The best way to get vitamin D is to get 10 minutes of sun at noon. (You do not want to be in the sun long enough to get a tan). Tanning happens after your body has received enough light and your skin wants to protect itself from the sun.

Anyway, for some odd reason, people are ignoring the science which clearly indicates that the best way to defeat COVID19 is to get some sun every day and to avoid crowds.

I know numerous people who spent the last three months hiding in their house (letting their immune systems weaken). Then suddenly they go out at night to crowded rallies, bars or protests where the are bond to expose their weakened immune systems to the virus..

Why are so many people doing the wrong thing?

I think the first problem is that many people in the media and health community de-emphasize the role of vitamins and nutrition in supporting immune health.

I think the other big mistake is that the media concentrated too heavily on pushing social isolation when they should have been focusing on good hygiene.

Personally, I think we are lucky that the uptick is taking place in early summer. The uptick is real and we have to modify our behavior in response to the uptick.

I suspect that we will sees businesses continue to behave responsibly, while the political class will continue to behave like jerks.

The best thing that people can do is to get some sunlight at noon. You do not want to tan. Tanning is a sign that your body received enough sunlight. I encourage people to engage in good hygiene.

Sort:

Vitamin D definitely seems to have a very positive effect combating this virus. Those who lack it seem to have much worse symptoms. Australia and New Zealand seem to have fared much better because they were just coming out of their summer,
I follow https://www.youtube.com/user/Campbellteaching on Youtube and he seems to give the best analysis of the Covid-19 pandemic I have seen.
I think Globally there be a second, much worse peak. Unfortunately people don't seem to learn.

Dr. Campbell started as a Vitamin-D skeptic. I complained about his videos two months ago. Back then he said that we should ignore the fringe supplement crowd and heed the authorities.

Once he saw the real science, he realized that Vitamin D (through sun exposure) could help reduce the severity of the disease.

The science of the immune system is extremely complex. Our body has different defense mechanisms. Inflammation, blood clotting and the release of cytokines are defense mechanism.

Sorry for delay, I actually remember your post and I even commented on it. I suppose for everyone this Virus has changed alot of the way people have to think about illness. I do think it is crazy when people close the door on alternative ways of thinking because so little is still known about Covid-19.
I am happy to hear that Dr. Campbell has been big enough to change his views on the natter when faced with evidence.

Hopefully, COVID19 will change the way that people think about health.
Our current paradigm is centered on the idea that health care can be treated as a product that either the state or big medicine can dole out. As they study the relation between the immune system and COVID19, people might rediscover that the health is about the individual.

That is so true, there is way too much attention being paid to fixing problems that could be avoided by a heathier lifestyle.

Wow, I am in position 19965 . hooray for me!

I realized a fun stat to calculate is "Curation Effectiveness." The formula could be something like weekly curation rewards divided by HIVE POWER. (This formula is distorted by power ups and power downs).

I calculated this figure for several accounts.

I thought that this stat would show who was doing the best job curating. Unfortunately, it seems to show who is best at gaming the curation system. The bots that upvote precisely at 5 minutes seem to get a bigger portion of the curation rewards than the people who read the post or people up upvote a post to reward good content.

Lol that is in fact news to me! Did you calculate my account as well? So you are saying it should be better to autovote and also autovote at 5 minutes? - interesting!
cheers, lizanomadsoul

The wallet for @hivebuzz says the account has 6325 HP . The estimated curation rewards are 0.352 HP .

My guess is that @HiveBuzz is not curating for the specific goal of getting curation rewards.

I imagine that voting bots are designed with curation rewards in mind; So they would design things to maximize their curation rewards.

I think the ratio of curation rewards to hive power would be a very interesting metric to study.

I think the study would show is that bots (and people for that matter) that upvote specifically to get curation rewards have a higher ratio than those that are trying to engage with people in the platform.

NOTE: What I've been doing of late is to curate posts on the recently created page. I should have a higher ration than a person who is upvoting posts on the trending page. I notice that several accounts will get scores of upvotes precisely at 5 minutes. I assume that 5 minutes is the current sweet spot for upvotes.

Since HiveBuzz is in the business of analyzing accounts, I thought I would mention this as an interesting metric to measure.

My guess is that @HiveBuzz is not curating for the specific goal of getting curation rewards.

You're right, curation rewards don't really matter to us. We distribute our votes to make as many people grow as possible.
